“Read the chapter. For homework, do the quiz at the end of the chapter. Bring it to class tomorrow. I don’t care if you finish it in class today or at home tonight.”  

Mr. Beauregard took his seat behind his desk, then called Ragden’s name. Ragden blinked, then stood and went up to his desk. Mr. Beauregard arranged some papers on his desk, then handed a page to Ragden. It was the test from the previous day. The page was marked with a perfect score.  

“Good work on that. As you are doing quite well in this class, I feel inclined to grant a special request,” he said softly so that only Ragden could hear. Ragden looked down at him, confused, “Not your request. Mrs. Kubowski spoke to me during the break. She needs your assistance with something in her classroom. She did not go into detail but asked for you, specifically. As you are doing so well, I see no reason to keep you. You are excused from the rest of class.”

“Then get your things and report to Mrs. Kubowski’s classroom.”

Ragden turned and went back to his desk to collect his things. As he picked up his backpack, he noticed Roy staring at him. He could see the question in the other man’s eyes. Roy gestured to his watch and Ragden shrugged. Ragden mouthed one word back to Roy, ‘Lunch.’ Roy nodded. Ragden turned and walked from the class. The halls were dead silent as Ragden made his way back to Mrs. Kubowski’s classroom. He stopped at the door and took a deep breath, trying to prepare himself for whatever waited for him. He closed his eyes and pulled the door open. The classroom was empty.
