To put things in perspective, I've bought novels by world renowned authors, for $8. This for example.

Why would I pay even half that, for a book from someone I've never heard of?

That's why it's critical to build up a following and get yourself known. Really known.

^^ This. ^^

I think it's always going to be easier to pull in a few more purchases from new readers, if you've got some good sales and reviews from a following. As Chrissie said the market is flooded and you have to work hard to stand out and pull in sales.

With regards to price: If I was buying from an author that I knew and loved then I'd be willing to stretch to a little more, but I don't think I've ever paid anything more than £4.99 for a ebook.

As a strategy it could be worth publishing a book with a few different short stories in it for a cheaper price, then publish your more substantial story as well, but for a little bit more. Once people have read the cheaper version, (which they're more likely to part cash for, if they've never read you before) if they like your style they have the option to spend a little more.

Anyone else watch this show? I love it!
It comes on TLC (in the UK) and it's all about this Italian American baker... it's just great TV.

You got to love a bit of the Cake Boss. It's on really late over here in the UK when I watch it, which means I'm usually pretty stoned and end up getting the munchies from watching all yummy looking cake!

There's a similar British one called chocywokydoda. They make it all out of chocolate. I would so love to go visit the shop.

Don't turn it off, just go with it. Keep writing your ideas down. Its great fun.

I have a lot of ideas written down and a few paragraphs into several stories that I cannot get finished. There is not enough time and stress can often kill the mood to write.

It would be awesome to spend a few weeks at a secluded mountain cabin just writing, especially sitting out on the porch.

Now that's just gone and given me another story idea!!

I think having too many ideas and not enough time to write is something that all writers face in varied degrees. I write my down in a little note pad if it's something that I know I really want to write one day, but most of my ideas just circle around my mind.
I have a story that isn't getting as much attention as my others. I was thinking of rewriting the first paragraph to hook the readers in, but I like how it starts so I've decided to go down a different route.

Audio versions seem to increase the number of reads on my stories, so I'm in the process of creating an audio version to go with it.

All the ideas others have mentioned should help as well.

Okay, I sent a PM to the general mailbox, and have yet to receive an answer, so I'll ask it here. My story is a modern retelling of Leda and the swan, rapiness component removed, but is it considered if Zeus, in the form of the swan, has intercourse with Leda and is therefore off limits for Lush? Don't want to be banned.

I'm not familiar with the story you're retelling, but from what you've described I don't think it would be acceptable. My understanding is that if a character in a story has the ability to transform from human-like to animal form, you are NOT allowed to have the sex scene with the character in it's animal form.

The A-Z say's:

— We do not accept stories that include sex with animals or that paint animals in a sexual light. However, if a person becomes aroused horseback riding and it is clear that the animal is not the sexual partner, we will accept the story.

- No apes. This is .
- No unicorns or centaurs because they are basically horses.
- We don’t allow tentacle sex with real animals like octopuses, as this is basically a form of too.

You can always submit with a note to the moderator explaining that you're unsure if it's acceptable. You won't be banned without a prior warning.

i've been dealing with Writer's block for several months now, and yeah, something i normally wouldn't write, but suddenly, i have a story coming. lovely feeling.

I hope you manage to get it written. I've got an idea (not saying what, as its a bit different and I don't want to give too much away) I just need to write it now.
One of the reasons I love entering the competitions is because it always pushes me to write something I would never normally consider.

I think this one is going to be a real challenge and I can't wait to get writing.
I'm glad it wasn't my job to pick a winner because the quality of the stories entered were amazing.

I do, however, think that the winners are well deserved.

Congratulations to you all.

I vote no, as I am trying to earn the omnium badge, have quite a way to go. By adding more categories it only diminishes the strive toward that badge.

Also, those who had the badge before the addition of the 6 new categories should have been able to keep the badge as they had written in ALL the categories prior to the addition of those 6 categories.... Very unfair to take that away from them after they had attained it.

I am now very discouraged to even continue working toward that badge. So my novel will be the last category I write in and will stay in the categories I wrote in prior to my quest for that badge.

Although I agree that it may be slightly unfair to move the goal posts for receiving a badge, my overruling feeling is that this is a social site and meant to be fun. Striving to achieve the goal of getting a badge is great, but ultimately in the grand scheme of things receiving a badge or not shouldn't lead to negative feelings. I'd hope that people would write for the love of telling a a good story, not just so that they may get a badge.

I can also see where the people who talk of concern of getting too many categories are coming from, but I think that any way in which we can help the reader find what topic of story they enjoy easier, then it can only be a good thing for the site.
A lot of fantasies are based in the workplace. We spend so much of our time there and become close with work colleagues, so I understand why this might be.

I think a lot of people come up with fantasies at work because sometimes you need to think of something other than the boring tasks you have day in day out.

As a writer I think there are so many forms of workplace that you can have some real fun bringing naughtiness into everyday situations. For this reason I voted yes.
I really like the information, as it makes it quicker to thank the people have voted on my stories, (regardless of score) I would be sad to see the feature removed.

My is that if an author can't take getting a score lower than they deem unworthy of their story, then they should simply disabled scoring.

If some who scores lower than a four isn't prepared to stick by their opinion and give feedback to authors who may receive said score, shouldn't be scoring the story in the first place.

At the end of the day it's not life and death if you get a low score on your story, if you're a good writer then people will read your work regardless.

It isn't as easy as it seems. Trying to set the backstory, create the proper mood and emotional connection and then artistically describe an intimate act proved more difficult than I imagined. I ended up having to delete some things I'd rather not have. Even my use of metaphor had to be trimmed. Even then I came in at 999 words!

I have to say though it was fun and it taught me to really concentrate on what was needed.

I've written two Flash stories now, both very different and a real challenge to write, but I agree that it really think about what you're writing and if it's really needed.

I've got the title for my competition story so far. The idea is slowing forming, so I hope to get writing soon. I want to get my audio for my other flash story done first.

I'm looking forward to reading yours.
I enjoy the challenge of writing Flash. Oral is one of my favourites and Lelo is such a brilliant brand, so I need to get thinking.

I love this competition!
Out of sight, but not out of mind. Happy Birthday Sweetie. Hope life is treating you well.

Massive Congratulations to the winners, all well deserved with such a high standard of writing.
I'm always looking for ways to track my growth as a writer and find other great authors to read, so with that in mind I would be interested if I could track who the top 100 authors on the site are.

You could do this either using a similar technique as the top author of the month box, or you could go off the number of followers an author has.
Great Job Liz!!

You'll have to come see me for your reward for being so helpful

How do you get the Grooveshark playlist to play automatically when someone clicks on your page rather than them having to manually click on it? I've gone to Grooveshark and cannot find anything about this feature anywhere. If anyone knows please let me know.

Thanks

It took me a while to find it, but here's what it say's on Grooveshark...

Tips:

To make a widget autostart when the page loads, you need to edit the widget code just a bit. There are two &p=0. Change both to &p=1.

For Playlists, any and all changes you make to the playlist will be reflected in your widget.

It is not possible to create a widget from an Artist or Album.

Personally, I find it slightly annoying if you have the autostart set, as nine times out of ten I already have music playing myself, and then you end up with that horrible sound of two tunes playing at once.

Warren James (UK) have loads of bankrupt stock at the minute. I'm loving this bracelet, which was £119, reduced to £29.50 buy one get one free!!! Love a good bargain. Think I'm going to order this and a black one. I'm such a Magpie - gotta lovely sparkly things.
I've bought fakes before, not for the label, just because I wanted something that I liked the look of for a reasonable price. I appreciate that the quality might not be as good as the official product, but that's to be expected.

I appreciate that there is the consideration of the ethical side of buying these products, but honestly when I'm struggling for money myself as much as I'd like to think of the fact the people that are making these things are considerably worse off than me, it's easy to put myself first. That is probably really selfish and I might think about it a little more in the future.

News print/word nails! As a huge bookworm myself, when I saw these nails in a tumblr post, I knew I had to try them. Once you get one or two of them done, it's quite easy.

It's just a tad bit time consuming, but all great nail designs are right?

Im having trouble with getting images on my forum replies at the moment, but just Google "news print nails" if you're interested.

I'm loving that! Definitely going to have to give it a try.

Here's a video for those of you like me that wanted to know how to do it...

I like a good beard, I think it makes some men look better. I never really had a thing for James Mcavoy until he grew his beard...

I think a light beard is better than a fully grown massive thing, or totally clean shaven.

Lol! Love this!

I'm loving that. When I've finally saved enough to get my shoes, that's so totally going to be done.
