Even without your kind intervention, Nicola, would such subterfuge by contestants actually be worth the trouble? Both of the following comp entries of mine received straight "5" scores (c. 30 or 40 of them each) - and neither made it into the top ten. Apparently, therefore, public scores are of limited relevance, and the judges have other more important criteria. Am I right?

Metamorphoses

And There Came Two Angels to Sodom

Partly right.

I can never easily find the thread where I explain the process in detail (on my iPad so will check later as I’m sure it must be stickied or should have been!).

There are so many 5’s handed out, that when I pull up the competition data, sometimes a couple of 2, 3 or 4 votes knock down someone’s average to 4.85 for example.

When either myself or a Senior Moderator does the shortlisting, we read the lot if we have the time, or more often in my case, I’ll use the Top 20-30 from the raw output.

One story which is a certain Top 10 (I’m still going through them), was voted down by 3 other competition writers, and it was enough to knock the story out of the Top 30.

If I’d taken the approach that our only real competitor takes, that story would have been placed nowhere.

Due to these kind of underhanded tactics, and the effect of friend spamming, I go through all the votes first, pull those from other entrants, and run the query again. Then I read as many as possible to combat the effect friend voting has.

Ultimately we want the best stories to win / rank. Yes, any shortlister’s opinion will be subjective, but we have so much experience, the best stories usually (not always!) rise to the top.

In a competition run last year, a lovely diligent helper read all the competition stories and shortlisted them for me. The eventual winner was outside the Top 25 based on average score alone. That’s why human intervention is so important.

So getting a perfect score of 5 doesn’t mean you’ll be in the Top 10 even. There are close to double that number with an average score of 5 for this competition.

I hope that clears things up!

EDIT: I knew I'd stickied this somewhere!

Is a '4' considered a "down vote"? I didn't give any, but I know some that do, not to be malicious, but just judging a story as 'not their favorite.'

I didn't think the entries were based on highest votes and am glad they aren't. I would think read count would be the more accurate evidence of a great read. I typically don't spam mine because I want to see where the chips naturally fall. Its still hard to gauge my writing though because many comment because I comment on theirs or they are my friend, etc.

You can't please everyone in a comp because everyone wants to win. And many of us will get comments saying, "You are the best!" which get your hopes up and then lead to disappointment when judges don't agree. I sat this one out to get back in the right mindset. Some know, I had an un-kimmi-like reaction to recent StoriesSpace comp. I don't ever want to do that again. I let myself expect an outcome, then felt ashamed, even embarrassed, when it didn't happen, deleted all my stories as a crazy, reactive response. Do NOT be that Kimmi!!!

Best to remember there are always more NOT in Top Ten than in there. And with high level of writing here, many brilliant entries will NOT make Top Ten. You aren't alone. Many gets tons of votes. Many have commenters project them to win. Try to view it as a way to attract readers and other authors to your work.

This is so true.

I'm thankfully too slow a writer to usually enter competitions, but I hate the stress of it anyway, haha.

Also, remember you may have the best written story on the planet, but it might be judged as not being quite as relevant to the theme than the eventual winners.

Lots of things go into the judging process. Rarely do we have to get the dartboard out smile
A nice big turnout again, with some very interesting interpretations of the job description, and all very good.

I really enjoyed reading those I managed to get to. I apologise now to those contestants whose stories I wasn't able to read, comment and score. However, I think I reciprocated to those who indeed read my story.
You all got a 5 from me, giggles.

Good luck everyone.

Thank you, Nicola, for that very lucid and helpful explanation - as well as that link, which I had never found before!

May I please echo Kimmi's question? I feel very much a newbie here, and haven't quite worked out the accepted scoring etiquette. I am usually delighted to receive "4"s; after all, it means "good", right? Perhaps therefore I naively give out more "4"s than is considered appropriate, to stories I genuinely like: I don't think of that as "downvoting" - quite the contrary. Am I misjudging that?

(I actually have a much-treasured "3" vote on one of my stories, from a writer for whom I have the utmost respect. It was accompanied by some truly helpful and encouraging comments. Honest assessments, accompanied by thoughtful constructive criticism, are worth far more than uncritical adulation.)

GrushaVashnadze's best stories:

Alison Goes to London (RR) - "love this... fun, and funny, and sexy" (sprite)

The Cursed Cunt (RR) - "holyyyyy sheeeiiit.... Your writing is fucking fantastic" (CarltonStJames)

A Worthless Filthy Fucking Smoking Trash Cunt Whore (RR) - "Brilliantly done. Of course." (naughtyannie)

Snow White and the Seven Dildos (RR) - "Fuck. It's perfect.... honestly genius and so fucking well executed." (VioletVixen)

Metamorphoses (RR) - "so imaginative and entertaining" (saucymh)

And There Came Two Angels to Sodom - "What a deliciously worded story! So juicy, so raunchy" (el_henke)

Fuck-Talk (with VioletVixen) - "Jeez. I feel rendered wordless by how much clever fucking fun this is" (Jaymal)

I must echo this.

I will typically refrain from giving a score to a competitor if it isn’t a five. And tbh, the scores on this site are inflated AF.

A five for me is a story I wish I’d written and wouldn’t change anything.

I’ve never considered a 3 or 4 as a “downvote.” 3 is average. Four is above average. There are shit tons of average in these contests and more than a fair share of mediocre (2 or lower).

I’ve never given less than a 3 for a contest entry. Or any story. If it’s that bad, I won’t finish. But I have given competitor fours and threes before. That isn’t malicious. Unless someone is going around giving every competitor story a 3 or under.

Too much stock is put into a raw score here.

Number of views aren’t any better either. This place is too clicky for story popularity and genres liked.

I wholeheartedly agree with your eloquent synopsis.

You meant “cliquey”?

It’s why we read as many entries as we can.

The way you say “This place” makes me think there’s a better place. Please PM me the details and I’ll start hanging out there
Yep. I often give 5s, especially on comp stories, as I don't want to get on Nicola's shitlist.

Granted, there are many fabulous stories, but there are some that teeter on the border for me, and I'll usually "round up" in competitions. If I don't like the subject matter, I won't finish reading it.

I will say, though, that if a story warrants less than a 3 - and remember we're grading for story writing quality here, not whether you disliked that Mabel didn't roger Alan in the way she was "supposed to" according to the genre norms - then the moderator probably shouldn't have passed it.

This site prides itself on publishing to a high standard. Yes, it can be frustrating for established authors and especially newcomers from other sites who are used to, perhaps unintentionally, throwing out misspelled content, a glut of missing words, run-on sentences or poorly formatted dialogue. Perfection is not expected - heck, none of my stories would have got through the process if so. But a degree of adherence to accepted formatting and established English writing conventions is.

It is difficult to separate concerns. You only have to look at any Amazon product reviews to know that many people assign a star rating to the delivery service and the product together, despite the rating clearly being intended for the product alone. That must frustrate sellers no end if there's a courier issue out of their control.

That said, I've had people throw a 1 on a story of mine because it was so vivid that it touched a nerve with the reader. I have no problem with that if they write a good constructive comment about the reason. It helps me learn what works and what doesn't. If anything, evoking a reaction in this manner is really a disguised 5 because it means the writing was astounding enough to stir the emotions, and the reaction was purely from the stark content rather than being badly written. The only downside to reactions like that is it drags a story average down, so if this happened in a competition, and the story didn't garner many readers, it might be skipped over in the shortlisting process if it were based on numbers alone.

That's why I love that the moderators, judges and Nicola read as many entries as they can. The human element is more important than the stats because hidden gems from new authors can take a podium or top 10 slot. I know that if a superbly written story doesn't make the top 10, it means there are at least ten other stories that fit the theme more closely. It's no reflection on the story as a whole: as mentioned above, there are only 10 slots on the iceberg above the waterline.

Please browse my digital bookshelf. In this collection, you can find 125 full stories, 10 micro-stories, and 3 poems with the following features:

* 30 Editor's Picks, 82 Recommended Reads.
* 16 competition podium places, 11 other times in the top ten.
* 23 collaborations.
* A whole heap of often filthy, tense, hot sex.

I have to thank nicola for going through the undoubtedly painful process of deleting malicious down votes. It's kind of hilarious that it happens - to give an absurd example, my first comp story was in the Masturbation Sex competition last year. I had been away from active participation in the site for close to 10 years, so most of my friends were inactive, plus I submitted it about 2 days before the closing date of comp with over 100 entries, so it had no chance of getting in the top 10 (nor did I expect it to), yet someone saw fit to give it a 1 (without a comment, I wouldn't mind if it was justified). This was a bit off-putting when only just getting back into writing, but it magically disappeared a few days later, which made me feel much better. The silliest part is that without the 1, it didn't even have the minimum 10 votes...

Unless I'm in a bad mood I give 5s, because I have limited time to read, and often have to do so in short bursts, so if a story has held my attention as far as the scoring bit at the bottom, I figure it deserves it. I try to tell the author at least one thing I liked in it, although I'm not always great at working out what.

I'm not sure views are much better as a determinant of quality - last time I checked the above story had 1500 more views than any of the top ten in that competition. I don't think that reflects its comparative quality, in fact I suspect it's entirely due to having the word "schoolgirls" in the title,. The judging process here seems as fair as it can be.

Try to view it as a way to attract readers and other authors to your work.

Yes - your story will remain on the competition page forever (in theory), and unlike in its category or your profile, it won't be bumped from its position by younger, sexier stories. And they're good for making friends, they're a fun time. I am one of the least competitive people in the world though, so that helps.

Punked competition entry: Punk’s Undead

A very naughty Catholic schoolgirl: Emma (Part 1) (RR) | (Part 2)

Horror: Women Of Dark Desires(RR), Doll Parts (EP), Lo! Baphomet! A Queer Erotic Horror (OS)

A cheeky little micro: Go Fuck Yourself!

Are you suggesting the only reason my comp entry "Birthday Bukkake Bonanza" has nearly 5000 views is because of its salacious title?

And there was I, trying so hard to evoke the work of such masters as Proust* and Steinbeck**.

Buddy, you’ve been around long enough to know Annie is Lush royalty. She epitomizes the salaciousness that this site is, and has amply been rewarded with a massive following. She’s a past comp winner, a very naughty lady, and comes with the whole package. Everyone wants to sleep with Annie. She’s THAT sexy. She knows how to play this writing game. She knows that a title grabs the reader’s attention. A good cover pic starts the salivating and anticipation. And because it’s Annie, we all know it’s going to be naughty as fuck. Plan your work, then work your plan, and you too will get a bunch of views. It basic marketing. But it helps to have a smokin’ ass like Annie.

Kimmie said it beautifully. Not just why do we write, but also why do we enter the Comps.

I enjoy the Comps because it bring out some of the best stories on the site. I see the Comps more as a way to stretch myself as a writer. Some of you might have noticed I do tend to write a bit . . . OK maybe more than 'a bit'. The Comps are a way for me to push myself. Trying to write to a theme is challenging, doing it within a set number of words is even more challenging (especially for a wordy bytch like myself) and also doing it with a deadline all make me push myself hard. I enjoy that aspect of Lush! I would like to one day win a Comp, but I don't write those stories to win a Comp, I write them to force myself to stretch the envelop in terms of subject matter and even the parameters of the Comp. I love that aspect of them.

I look at the Badges in much the same way, I recently earned the Prolific Writer Badge and am close to the Omniun Badge. Without that incentive I know I would not have attempted to write poetry, something I found more enjoyable than I ever thought. I would have never considered writing under many of the categories, because some of them made me uncomfortable. But the Comps and the Badges force me out of my comfort zone and that's the part I enjoy the best. Sometimes everyone needs a kick in the ass to try something new, and these things are a real kick for me :-)

I think I just proved that I am a wordy bytch as well :-) Thanks Kimmie for expressing things so well.

Oh, I hope my post didn't seem aimed at Annie (or any other writer who happens to have a popular story)! She posted after me, for a start. "The above story" in my post referred to my own story in a previous competition, and the fact I think it's views are due it having an exciting keyword in the title (I would be amused to know how many readers stop reading it once they realise it's the schoolboys will be getting their kit off, not the girls).

The reverse is of course not true, just because a story has lots of views and a saucy title doesn't mean it's not brilliant. Annie is a perfect example, as you say, because she has a deserved reputation so gets a lot of views from people like me who read everything she puts out because it's filthy, fun, and brilliantly written. In fact, until last year, I'd say 90% of the stories I read here were by naughtyannie or sprite.

Speaking of which:

In an early competition I entered I gave a mix of 4's and 5's to indicate which stories I thought best.

But I don't anymore, for me scoring and comments are part of what we do as a community of writers and the major strength of lush compared to other sites is that sense of writing community. So I give 5's and try to read and constructively comment on as many stories as possible particularly on those who are newish to competition writing.

Do check out my latest story:

And my other stories, including 5 EPs, 24 RR's, and 15 competition top 10's including my pride competition winner: On Oxford Street, This Gay Girl Found Pride While Playing With Balls

Nope.

You may or may not know this, but Puerto Vallarta is a hotbed vacation spot for the LBGTQ+ community. Well, the first time I traveled there, I did not know that. I was shopping and stopped in a store. A sex store. A sex store catering specifically to gay men. What? Who me? Whst was I doing in there? Oh, I... I was just shopping for a friend. Not for me.

Anyway, I saw the biggest cock ring I’d ever seen in my life. It was Popeye forearm big. THAT is what I believe Fellowship of the Cock Ring is about.

Omg.

Plus, you already knew I give out a lot of 3's but never to low ball a user cause that's silly.
I can only imagine which users suffer from low self-esteem when it comes to down voting a well written story by a user they dislike. That's too childish.
