Do you prefer reading a story that happens to have sex in it, or a story about sex?

That's a great question. I've read some stories on here that from the get go were all about sex with really no plot, backstory, etc. and found them very stimulating. Then I've read stories where it ultimately comes down to sexual activity but the story if a great read. If I had to choose, I'd pick a story that has a good plot, backstory, dialog, etc. that results in sexual activity. My 2 cents.

Generally, I prefer a story with sex in it. Just sex with little or no context is a bit clinical. Some really good writers can pull it off, but not many.

I think I'll be in the minority here, but I prefer stories that are all or mostly sex. Well plotted stories with sex in them often end up with a scene that reads like the writer thought "insert sex scene here" and didn't put as much work into that part, because it's just sex.

Stories about the sex itself, I think, tend to be more creative and personal, because you are forced to write about sex in detail, and use it as a plot almost. And sex can be really interesting, if it's not done in a cookie cutter, "insert sex scene here" kinda way.

I agree with Beffer’s comment. There have been a few stories I’ve read here, where I found myself so caught up in the plot, characters, dialog, etc., that when I sensed everything was about to switch to the sex scene, I found myself thinking, ‘No, don’t stop now’. It’s as if the sex becomes incidental. I’m sure, that while I’d kept reading, I tended to rush through that scene to get back to the story. These are some of the authors and tales I remember, even though it may have been several years since I read them.

This may or may not be a trend, but it seems to me as if more and more authors are moving away from the detailed description of the actual deed. Instead, they set the stage where we know it is about to happen, then in a few brief sentences, confirm the readers suspicions, then move on with the story. This way, the reader’s imagination takes over and so the picture being painted in their mind, will be one they have fantasized about in the past. It becomes very real to them.
If you're feeling bored during this Covid-19 epidemic I’d like to suggest
you take a peek at a story I collaborated with SueBrasil, a brilliant author.
It's about a mistake in judgment a lady makes concerning a friend, based
on the hurtful words of someone that only thinks of himself. Will that
conniving person succeed in ruining a beautiful friendship, or will she see
through his lies? It's gradually creeping up towards the 30,000 mark
and we’d love any votes or hearing whatever comments you may wish
to make. It is listed in my profile under ‘FAVOURITES’ as Apologize.

I like a balance. There needs to be some story (plot, characters) to give context to the sex but there also needs to be some good, detailed, dirty sex.

As a romantic, at heart, I try to write a story with plot development and character development. That said, I try to make the sex scenes descriptive enough so that you feel like you are there with them.

If it is a short story then I like it to be about sex.
But if the story is going to have multiple chapters then I like to get to know more about the characters.

I need a plot, and a plausible one at that, in the stories I read. But I don't want to get bogged down in an overly intricate, involved plot in an erotic story. If I wanted that type of story, I could just read regular fiction anywhere.

In a Lush story, the plot and characters should not take over the story to the point they overshadow the sex.

There are plenty of places to read great fiction, but readers come here looking for hot, arousing stories. It's been my experience that -- for me -- the two are just about mutually exclusive.

The trick, in the end, is to integrate the sex into the story rather than having it kind of break into the story. The sex should flow naturally from the story and the story should make it believable that these people are having sex. That's what I shoot for, at least. I have enough RRs to think I do make it there occasionally.

I like both. Love getting into complex characters with the sex integral to their journey. But, like Verbal says, sometimes focusing on the act itself and just exploring it - that moment of raw passion - is equally as good.

As a writer, I've had a go at both types. Deep character exploration in "Thirteen Steps From Heaven Or Hell" where the seduction and sexual tension is constantly embroiled in the interaction between the two leads. And flipping that idea around, focusing on an act in a hotel room and filling in the back story as the sex develops, in "The Edge of Control" or "Alone In Her Hotel Room". And a whole bunch of other experiments in between.

Please browse my digital bookshelf. In this collection, you can find 109 full stories, 10 micro-stories, and 2 poems with the following features:

* 29 Editor's Picks, 72 Recommended Reads.
* 15 competition podium places, 9 other times in the top ten.
* 21 collaborations.
* A whole heap of often filthy, tense, hot sex.

I write what I like to read, which usually means an interesting story with lots of detailed sex, though perhaps only in the second half. I can think of two or three stories I wrote where it didn't come off (mostly because there were two stories coming together where that didn't quite work), but on the whole I like what I've written.

Although it doesn't have to be long or intricate, sex scene(s) need some context. I prefer that the authors don't go overboard with physical details of the participants, because one of the nice things about erotica as opposed to video porn clips, is the ability to insert themselves into the characters (no pun intended) when something in the story triggers a memory of a situation or past lover. A phrase about feeling a nipple harden though fabric when caressed, is more relatable than the 5'8' blonde Japanese woman with a C cup getting a hard nipple. Some of the best and most erotic stories I've read here may describe what a woman is wearing but few details on the woman. Then the reader can fill in the blanks, perhaps with a past lover, or a current one, or better yet , a future one!
I'm a big fan of the seduction type stories, because those are more likely to trigger memories of a real incident. Likewise the participants explaining their thoughts during the story help make them more authentic. To me, reality is more erotic than fantasy. Real life almost always involves seduction, whether it's over a period of an evening or years.

I'm a purist. I prefer a story about sex.

Everything in good writing should be either developing the characters or propelling the plot. Erotica in particular should have sex as an essential component, even if it's just the intention of the story.

Boy meets girl. Boy wants to fuck girl. Boy overcomes obstacles to achieve said objective.

If the sex can come out without hurting the overall integrity of the story, then the writing - and to some degree my enjoyment - is the lesser for it. One of my earlier stories, Confidence Within, falls into this category. The real story is in their interaction up until the sex. The sex itself doesn't add anything...to the story.
My latest story is a racy little piece about what happens when someone cute from work invites you over to watch Netflix and Chill.

I prefer either but the STORY has to be there whether in a Flash that oozes sex start to finish or in a long slowly evolving series. Even in erotica you need a good story.

I agree with this gentleman. First thing I thought of was 'Basic Instinct.' Definitely plot, characters and the like but sexual tension and attraction was the driving force of it all.

If well done, a story can add to the reader's investment and empathy towards the characters and make the sex more impactful. However, I'm not shy to admit that I have days where I just want to read smut to add to my imagination's spank bank.

Regardless of whether the plot is sex-related or not, I enjoy where the characters have their motivations and stakes. Their motivation can be to satiate their unstoppable lust, and the stake could be not getting to cum for all I care. The only thing I find hard to read through is when someone just laundry lists the sex acts. I want to know how the characters feel, think, and react to each other.

Well I'm a romantic so I need to feel there's some kind of emotional connection between the people involved for it to really sizzle. Hey even if that emotion is pure blood boiling lust, it's still an emotion. Give me a story with sex elements and I'm happy. Says the woman writing a series where it's just wall to wall sex with a flimsy plot.
