They should actually display straight away. I make them in advance of competitions ending and send them to Gav to be stored on the media server ready to go.

Might just be a typo or code gremlin on his end. I'll send him a message.

Good afternoon everyone - and hi Kimmi, I hope you're feeling better today!

Wow, after reading all the posts about James' chart I was very surprised. I just looked at it as interesting information all compiled in one spot, I never even thought of it as controversal. I'm not real familiar yet with how the votes and comments add up or what categories are most popular so I looked at it like that, for my own education. I suppose if I had entered the contest - or especially if I had a number of times I might have felt differently about it so I guess I can see that side too.

I've always liked looking at stats and seeing comparisons though, so maybe that's just me. The truth is that after reading some of the great entries I'd have been too intimidated to enter anyway, and I still have NO IDEA how they can pick the winners. Maybe one day I'll throw my hat (or bra, or something) in the ring someday, but not yet.

The problem with posting lists like that is perception.

Firstly, it’s inaccurate. For example, it doesn’t take into account any of the work that is put in after every competition ends to filter out things like deliberate down-voting of competitors. These extra steps, which all take time and effort, are a testament to how important running a fair competition is to Lush.

I think the main issue, and why it could be considered ‘controversial’, is that some authors believe that having a superior number of votes and/or a high average score on their competition entry should reflect in their placement in the results. However, the truth is that there is no correlation between popularity and quality. These statistics are used to generate an initial shortlist which, after being whittled down, is subsequently passed onto the judging panel. It’s just a starting point in the judging process.

What Lush would like to avoid is people muddying the waters. You can post information like that and say it’s just for curiosity’s sake, but some people will infer the intent is to cast doubts on the integrity of the judging process, and others will accept it as evidence that their work is being unfairly judged. It is due to this confusion that a post was written detailing how the competition judging is performed:

https://forum.lushstories.com/yaf_postst67174_The-Competition-Judging-Process.aspx

So, please don’t feel intimidated about entering. Everyone is encouraged to give it a shot. smile

Each author can only publish one piece per 24 hour period. That 24 hours hasn’t yet elapsed since this author published their first story.

Hence, it has been entered onto the competition list immediately but won’t appear on the front page until this evening.
Scarlet Seductress
Howdy.

I took a quick look at your submission and the formatting looks fine.

As for when it will be processed, there are currently 69 stories pending in the moderation queue and yours is number 30. It's quite busy at the moment as we have a story competition open.

Hope that answers your questions.

I have to manually count the people in the room and one of the mods said they're used to be a counter. If so, can you please bring it back?

Interesting. So someone got their hands on the domain and used it for their own purposes? Cute. Because there used to be a hell of a lot more than 100+ but I have not been there in probably over a decade.

No. The site is back up same as it ever was - they were probably just having technical difficulties.

Authors are given directories of the main domain to publish their work on. That link above takes you to one such directory.

Edit: Sorry, misunderstood your post about it being a Usenet Group scrape. Thought you were talking specifically about the page I mentioned.
Scarlet Seductress
Quote by seeker4
It was an archive of posts from an unmoderated Usenet group so no shock there. You could post pretty much any garbage you liked on the alt. groups. Glad it is gone, but its existence shouldn't surprise or shock anyone who entered that world back in its heyday.

No, it’s not. It links to the page of an ASSTR publisher with 100+ stories listed. They’re all still live and accessible.
Scarlet Seductress
I just Googled 'ASSTR' to see if it was still appearing in search results and saw this.

I thought nah, there's no way they'd show results for that on Google. Clicked on it. Clicked off it.

Never mind dying a slow death, ASSTR should be burned at the fucking stake.

And if I wrote all new material utilising a character from my entry?

For example: 'The Further Adventures of The Gooseberry Fool, My Sexual Escapades at a Landfill Site'

How about that?

I'm sure one of my colleagues will correct me if I am wrong but I believe that would still have to wait until after the competition is closed.

I am considering writing a 'spin off' series based on a segment of my competition entry, which would include 'reworking' that segment into a new story and format. Is it acceptable to do that whilst the competition is still running or should I wait until the competition has closed?

You would have to wait until it is closed.

I see no reason to entertain any further griping about the perceived equality of this site's story competition practices.

The bottom line is that Lush believes in a fair and even chance for all authors and conducts the competitions in the fairest and most honorable way possible. The site has even gone to the trouble of detailing the exact methodology used for those that are curious.

If you would like to offer your thoughts on how to improve these competitions then by all means send a message using the contact form and share with Lush your ideas:

https://www.lushstories.com/contact-us.aspx

If I were a new member to Lush and considering entering a story competition here, reading through some of this thread would put me off. That is unacceptable.

From this point on, let's please keep this thread to story ideas, questions about the theme, pimping your entry, etc.

Thank you.

I just renewed the hosting (shared hosting, not virtual private) for a site I run and it was a little over US$120 for a year and includes Wordpress hosting in the base package so self-hosting need not be expensive, either (I don't use WP myself, the site runs on commercial forum software). And domain registration, as said, is fairly inexpensive but I use a .ca domain for the site so my pricing is not really applicable. I paid CA$48 for four years when I renewed in January.

That's not especially cheap web hosting. My hosting account works out to circa $80 USD for several sites. I hope you get all the bells and whistles for that: SSD drives, unlimited resources (disk space, bandwidth, databases, emails, subdomains), server-side caching e.g. LiteSpeed, daily backups with a month's worth of recovery points, etc.

I forgot. Sorry.

And I wasn't completely nude.

Just pulled my panties to one side for you.

Tried a video chat with Sprite last night.

She was completely nude.

Best. feature. ever.

How about subcategories? The design change and implementation would be relatively simple; one new table in the db for flexible category structure or, say, 5 extra fields on the main story table to hold up to 5 subcategories.

It would mean more info for the readers. It's something you can easily set and just notify the writers when approving stories. It keeps the main category foremost.

I have a Mind Control story, but because of a conversation in it that MIGHT occur later, it had to be moved to the Incest category due to site rules. Even if were to occur, it's still primarily a Mind Control story. This will fix that issue while still making users aware of the story's content.

B.

This has a whole bunch of problems, the most important of which is our feature which allows users to block story categories that they do not wish to see.

For example, if a member does not wish to see any fantasy content they can block it. Your 'subcategory' idea would require this functionality to be expanded to all subcategories as well. Even if each main category was limited to five subcategories (which would realistically never be enough), that's circa 285?

I don't see any need for categorising stories to be this granular, particularly as we have story tags.

Member deleted. Thanks for the heads-up.

As the OP started this thread 3 years ago it would appear any further discussion at this point is moot, however...

I see what you are talking here about. I don't know how professional will be from my point of view to say that I hate WordPress, but I will try to explain why. First of all, I see that a lot of rookies are using it and they really think that they know how to create a website. Come on now, it’s nothing hard to create a WordPress website. It amuses me really bad when someone is trying to install a plugin like https://stylemixthemes.com/consulting/, this one, due to its 32 bis structure is ruining the whole WP project and those code writers are like OMG, what happened right now? Go and learn how to create a proper website, that’s what happened.

You hate WordPress because it's easy for "rookies" (read: people with no coding experience) to use? It's supposed to be. It's a CMS (Content Management System). That is literally the point of it.

WordPress is a fantastic CMS. It is wasn't, it wouldn't be being used by more than 60 million websites, including 39% of the top 10 million websites as of January 2021 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WordPress).

Also, the link you provided is for a theme that is bundled with plugins such as Elementor and WPBakery, which are awesome.

"...due to its 32 bis structure is ruining the whole WP project and those code writers are like OMG, what happened right now?"

This is just nonsensical gibberish.

A story with that name and synopsis is crying out for a cover image. The music video to Rihanna's 'Bitch Better Have My Money' was the first thing that popped into my mind.

You find a suitable image and I'll Photoshop it for you if you want.

Happy Birthday, Chris!

I'm not a fan of either example to be honest. My preference would be somewhere between the two.
Scarlet Seductress
Six days left, folks. Time enough to enter something if you're still on the fence.

It's honestly worth taking the leap and giving it a go if you never have. Just ignore that little flutter of nerves before you hit the submit button. Even competition regulars still get those. smile
