@coco - I have had a "thing" for Dorothy Dandridge ever since I was about 6 and saw a clip of her singing "Cow-Cow Boogie". I have a positively stunning photo of Lena Horne upstairs in the music room.
Of the choices, I'd have to go for Norma Jean, though she was never my heartthrob. I was busy having the hots for someone wo always seemed like a stronger personality to me: Katherine Hepburn.

I have thought about this for years and have never come up with one person who is clearly the hottest. I think one of the problems I have is due to my being around the world so much. Every where I go I am shown or see some woman from that culture that is astonishingly hot. Yes, "Norma Jean" is the one we all know here in the west. If this site were based in India for example, would they say Aishwariya Rai? There is a recognition factor involved here and a cultural bias, not to mention the fact that photography today is much better than in any previous era. How do we really know which woman is really that hot, or is just photogenic and "glam-ed" to be? Or photoshopped to be? So whoever we choose will have to have those qualifiers attached.

I agree with everything you said here. I had more the likes of Salma Hayek, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and even Rachel McAdams when I meant women that people want to consider the hottest.

To be honest, I was also thinking about Marilyn when I wrote my rant concerning Pamela Anderson. To me, they are two representations of the same archetype, from different eras. They do have a lot in common in fact : overt sexual appearance, coming from a relatively poor/uneducated environment (Pam's parents were repairman/waitress), neither of them had an acting background when they got in the industry and got there mostly for their looks, both being typecasted to play the dumb blonde, both posed for Playboy, etc. Marilyn is a better 'iconic' version of this archetype because she was one of the very first to portray it in the mass media era with such a high level of fame, glamour and follow-up, and her tragic death surely contributed largely to her iconic status. Pamela is a 'modern' version of it, with a lot more people from our current era being able to relate to her 'hotness'.

It's easier for people today to offer Marilyn Monroe credit, because the way she was provocative back in the 50s doesn't have quite the same impact it has today, but she was still a huge controversial figure in her days. If the question 'who is the most attractive woman currently?' was asked back in the 50s, most probably a lot of people would have been as reluctant to name Marilyn as people today have a hard time admittting that Pamela Anderson is one of the hottest woman of the last few decades.

To me, there's a huge difference between being 'beautiful', 'elegant' or 'inspiring' and being 'hot' (which is the term being used in this thread). Being 'hot' refers to a woman's ability to provoke sexual desires. In that regard, Pamela Anderson is an easy win over Salma Hayek and Natalie Portman, and Marilyn Monroe was most probably an easy win over Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Russell, although all of these undeniably have (or had) an enormous sex appeal.

To deny this is fairly hypocrite, in my honest opinion. I once studied in psychology, and some PhD students had access to the most searched keywords of the internet to write a thesis. The top 5 keywords were all sexual terms ; 'Pamela Anderson' was among them. This was nearly 15 years after her first Playboy photoshoot, and Pamela is not even part of the porn industry (neither are her naked pictures explicit or numerous). This tells quite a lot about Mrs. Anderson overall sex appeal. Of course subjectivity plays a role, and most other women can quite easily provoke sexual desires too, but there's a natural tendency for men to be sexually attracted to women like Pamela Anderson that's pretty obvious to me.

A lot of people would tend to say "well, she's sexually attractive because she acts purposely so, being provocative and all", but I don't believe it's all about that. Natalie Portman wears sexy dresses and glamorous make-up quite often, yet it's never perceived as provocative as when a woman like Pamela Anderson does exactly the same. And contrarily to popular belief, Pamela Anderson didn't have more plastic surgeries than the average actress/model (eg. Salma Hayek), especially in her 'golden' years ; most people think that because her traits were already pretty much perfect. Even the first breasts implants she had in the 90s were not a huge improvement over her natural ones. She was 100% natural on these pictures (1989) : one, two.

This video is a perfect example of her appeal. In it, Pamela appears as her most casual/asexual self, talking about home improvements, dressed with masculine clothes, and not showing any intentional flirtatious moves whatsoever.



Still, for a woman like her, 'SEX' comes up to any man's mind in her presence, even when she tries her best to avoid provoking those thoughts. That fits my definition of being 'hot' fairly well. Women like Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman or Rachel McAdams can somehow manage to put their sexuality aside (even when they're dressed quite provocatively) and promote other aspects of their personality, hence why people label them as elegant, charming, intelligent and respectable. That's a little harder to achieve when you have literally everything working with you (or against you) like Pamela Anderson does sexually : flawless face that's gorgeous from any goddamn angle, sparkling eyes, blonde hair, perfect posture and shapes that stand out even when she's dressed casually, sweet innocent femine voice, etc., etc. Even her name is sexy as hell : Pamela 'Denise' Anderson (which is her real name, by the way).

It's almost as if these women become 'something' more than 'someone' in the eyes of many people. Marilyn Monroe also struggled all her career to be perceived as something more than a 'dumb hot blonde', but her overt sexual appearance always worked against her. That's what I like about what women like her and Pamela Anderson represent : the constant struggle for women (all of them) to display their sexual nature elegantly without appearing superficial or distasteful.

People still have a hard time giving them credit for what they are though, at least without using derogatory terms to do so. As I've said before, when asked who they think is the 'hottest' woman, a lot of them will name role models they can somehow relate to a bit more and that provoke sexual desires the way they judge appropriate a lot more than women who obviously provoke these desires the most. There's something legitimate in that, that is, to promote a more accessible portrait of feminity (especially to younger women), but I don't see why we have to make women like Marilyn Monroe or Pamela Anderson martyrs to achieve that, or deny their obvious merit. Even myself initially played along and mentioned Rachel McAdams allure as a preference (which was all very sincere), as I personally prefer when sexual thoughts can possibly take a second stance when I interact with a woman. But I still have a whole lot of respect for Marilyn Monroe, Pamela Anderson or hot fitness models, and to be fair, they do are a lot 'hotter' than Rachel McAdams, and I sure love taking a glance at them (or else).

Anyway, that's how I respond when I'm asked who I believe is the hottest woman of the last few decades.
