To promote our new "Microfiction" category, we are running a quick and dirty short story competition.

It is open to all, established writers and people who might like to publish their first piece here.

Microfiction Competition

The aim of Microfiction (also commonly known as “micro-fiction”) is to tell a complete story within a limited number of words.

Although the word count limit is very restrictive, stories in this category should still adhere to basic story rules of having a beginning, middle and an end.

Competition Theme

For this competition, we want writers to be inspired by the image of the 2 lovers in a poppy field. Other than that, feel free to use your imagination!

As a challenge to writers, stories must be exactly 100 words (using our text editor's word count). They must be submitted to the Microfiction category.

Poems or fantasy stories are not accepted in this competition.

Stories must be exactly 100 words. There's a single prize of $100, and the deadline is May 31.

I write three good micros and then she starts a comp for them. And the Masturbation comp came just after I wrote a terrific masturbation story. So I guess the rule is that when I have a good story in a niche category, I should sit on it until the next comp announcement.6IJ767netBdaaBja

Anyhow, I kind of expected this. Great way to get more attention on the new category. I am in, once I have an idea.
Oh, and yay, micros have a place on the front page now!

I hear ya! Same boat....Sighs...I should have known. Ah well...
Well, I thought I was done with microfiction for a while, but that image worked for me.

"Scarlet Muse" is already in the queue

I'm just hoping not too many people scream in frustration at me stealing the obvious cue of the typewriter right out of the gate.

That reminds me that I really need to get "Feline Nemesis" for Storiesspace back into my queue as soon as I've cleared a couple of WIPs. A ghost trying to haunt the home of people with cats. Every thing he tries to do gets blamed on the furballs and ignored. Poor guy can't even beat his head against the wall in frustration.

I did a quick first draft. Not sure if it will stay or not, but it's only 103 words so won't take too much editing to get it into Microfiction size. Needs polishing, too.

I know, right? I'm never, ever going to write and submit anything again until the appropriate comp is announced. Oh, I'll write, else the pressure might blow my head off, but I'll bank them for the next comp...

fyi, this will be the final comp on lush stories.

Do we have to include all the ancillary crap surrounding the two lovers in the story? Hard enough in 100 words without having to include the typewriter and books! Egad - typewriter and books? What are those! Is this comp set in the 20th century or something????? Just asking!

nope. you can include or disclude anything you wish. you may write a story about a typewriter, or poppies, or whatever part of the photo you wish - it's not meant to be literal - just use it for inspiration. smile and it can be set in any time frame that strikes you.

I look forward to reading your stories.

Okay, I'm officially retired. Bring on the dancing girls! (I participate - anyone can just watch.)
Side note: The cool-down time limit between casting votes is a little frustrating when reading in the microfiction category. Acceptable and understandable because it's a necessary mitigation measure against voting shenanigans, but still frustrating.

Hey Nicola, on this thread you say the cut-off date is May 31, but on the competition page, it says May 30.

Which are we going with?

Edit: The course of a day could be 25 entries lol

Thanks Rachel. My mind is at ease now. I was wondering if this was your way of weeding out all of those authors whose lessor stories in this category are sure to cum - I mean come. Sorry for the Freudian slip.

Help please! I have a problem already. When I hit "submit story", the text editor definitely said 100 words. But on the next screen it said 101. How do I get round this?

03 January 2025 - Why not start the year with a bit of smut by your favourite Lush author? Or if not, try my latest instead. The Jogger And The Flasher | Lush Stories Please read, comment and maybe give it a ❤️ - or even a⭐ if you really enjoy it! Thank you! Annie xxx

I’d hoped this was fixed by now.

31st May everywhere is the end date.

My suggestion is get your entries in well before so your entry qualifies for the 10 vote minimum.
