Do you ever "burn out" on writing sex?

Because I think I have. I simply have no interest in writing sex scenes right now. I have ideas that scream "LUSH" but all I'm interested in is the plot and characters. I mean, seriously, how can I think of a story set at a "sex resort" and only be interested in the relationship between the main characters.

Anyone else go through something like this? Is there a cure other than just lay off the sex for a while until the mood returns?
all the time. i love writing every things else, but yeah, the actual sex scene? it's like just variations on the same thing you've written a million times before UNLESS one of the participants has... TENTACLES!

that all said, i end up writing the story, with 'insert sex here' and then, one night, get really stoned, masturbate a lot, and then start 'inserting' the sex. (and yes, that is a serious answer).

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Stick them somewhere weird before the scene starts. Broom closet. The back of a VW microbus filled with shovels and rakes and implements of destruction. A hammock. A vat of Jello. Anywhere that potentially requires getting into strange positions or provides environmental interactions.

Riff off that.

Not necessarily appropriate for every story, but anywhere that a little humor, insanity, or destruction of property is appropriate, you can use it to distract yourself from writing the bump and grind.

There's something to be said for writing some Sci-Fi/Fantasy/NonHuman stuff and figuring out the logistics, too. Fairies, giants, lamias... Fantasy is really my original wheelhouse as far as erotica is concerned, and it provides lots of potential to keep you interested in the sex scenes, if you enjoy writing the genre.

Maybe all you need is a detour into the weird to revitalize you.
Yeah. I kind of have too. I'll come back to it eventually, I think. I still get story ideas, but the idea of writing them kinda bores me right now.

At least I ended on a high note (Purr) (with sprite) (shameless plug).
after writing 30 stories in less than 5 months, I was very burned out. I had a specific goal for a number of stories, so struggled to finish 1 last 3 part series, then would need only another 2 or 3 parter to hit the number I needed. I really like to develop characters and tell a story. the sex is almost incidental, but even with that, I had planned on taking a break when those were done. however, glutton for punishment that I am, I decided to enter another comp. and have just finished writing and submitting it. while I have a number of stories that I have started over the years I have been here, I am going to take a break with one exception. I recently recalled a story I had done a while back, but had completely forgotten about. AND, it involves TENTACLE sex!!!!!! really weird tentacle sex... just needs a bit of polishing.

after that, I will take a break unless some inspiration hits me. in the meantime, I have a couple of novels that need some work.

If ever I feel burnt out, I think of our Rachel being penetrated in all orifices by a multi-tenticled sex-starved lesbian monster, and my juices* start to flow.

* creative juices, I mean.

22 February 2024 - How about a quick plug for one of my filthiest recent stories? It's all in the title - Naked Pool Party Swingers | Lush Stories Please read, comment and maybe give it a ❤️ - or even a⭐ if you really enjoy it! Thank you! Annie xxx

Yeah, I get burned out, 2018, I must have put down over 150,000 words in my *spare time* including a whole novel/novelette and a couple of competitions.

I wrote in January and started a new story, wrote down some more chapters, put the second chapter here and it was utter garbage so I deleted it. I just left it, I looked at them and couldn't work out what to make of it. There were some other things going on in my life and that's for another thread.

I think if you ever get in that situation, just leave it alone, go do something else. I love writing, I love the challenge and the mental agility it needs. However, I find it is not an infinite resource.

I've had two bouts of writer's bloc now, all I've learned is do what is right for you and give it time.

One thing that did work for me - write some flash fiction.
I am there right now. There are so many true stories I could tell, but those happened before I turned sixteen and that is against the rules and regs.

But ... if it's a good story with "insert sex here", my first question right now is why write the sex scene at all. Just have have it fade to black. A recent story I posted on another non-erotica site could have had a hot sex scene in the middle and gone here, but the story didn't need it (in fact, it would have been a distraction IMHO) so I stop with them heading to the bedroom and suggest what happened.

Thanks for the responses. The general gist seems to be "try something different" and maybe that's where to go. We'll see. Right now, I'm pursuing some of my non-erotic writing just to keep my writing skills in trim.
All the time, I recently had an idea for a story for Lush, started writing and 10000 words later I have some of the best stuff I have ever written but not a single sex scene in it. i got totally lost in developing the characters and plot.

The trouble is there is only so many variation of a sex scene I feel I can write and mood can play a big part in when I write. I often turn to writing when I am at my lowest ebb mood wise.
Yes I have. Late last year was one such point. I just wasn't feeling it and everything had "put sex here" tags in it, so I stepped away for a few months. Came back here fully charged and published a truckload in the first half of the year.

Sometimes I'll write a blinding scene in an hour. Sometimes it takes months. Other times I'll come up with an idea that I think is white hot, start it and find it doesn't rock. I've written five-, six-, seven-, ten-thousand-word stories, got them ready to publish, read them back a few days later and just left them to rot because they simply don't zing.

I sat out the last few competitions after writing virtually complete stories. They just didn't feel right. The sex seemed, like you say, a distraction not a motivation for furthering the plot, and could have been largely hacked out without any detriment to storyline. Just felt like I was rehashing old sex scenes with different characters, so needed a fresh angle. Wrote from the female perspective in "Contrast" recently, which was a refreshing challenge and is going down well with readers, but I probably need to do more to fully revitalise my writing.

Perhaps I'll take RR's advice. Maybe sometimes you gotta just go weird or go home in order to bounce back.

Please browse my digital bookshelf. In this collection, you can find 115 full stories, 10 micro-stories, and 2 poems with the following features:

* 29 Editor's Picks, 75 Recommended Reads.
* 15 competition podium places, 11 other times in the top ten.
* 21 collaborations.
* A whole heap of often filthy, tense, hot sex.

If you're burnt out on writing sex, and only on that part, it's highly likely that the problem is you feel as if you're repeating yourself. That's why I say to take a venture into the weird, whether it be odd locations, some fetish, or tentacles.

If you're full on unable to write, it may be that you do need to step away for a while. I just got back to writing after yet another long hiatus. When I jumped back in, I decided to do it with vignettes. Really short ( for me ) stories that focus on a single sex act. Sometimes, focusing on one thing and going deep into detail with it can crack your feeling of repetition.
Yes, like anything in life, you can run out of gas. Other interests and problems get in the way of writing. It also becomes frustrating, boring and tedious. It just happens.
It's so reassuring to see I am not alone in this, and that so many of the best writers on list have the same issue. Some really good advice up there too.

For me, its always been how people come to have sex that I have enjoyed writing about, more these days the interaction, dialogue in particular. But having said that, in the early days I would write the sex scenes with an enormous boner. Sweet memories. Perhaps it's my age, my declining libido.

But it is sex that gets us the readers. Even with niche, genre sites, we would not get the readership we get on Lush. Unless anyone knows different. ('
Thank heavens it's not just me! I know my stuff is never terribly over-sexed, but more and more, I just get caught up in the plot and characters and the sex seems tagged on to me. Which doesn't seem very fair on Lush readers.

As all you guys say, it's the danger of repetition in describing sex scenes that is the bugbear. I'll just have to try harder and maybe replace my bonnets with tentacles...
Believe it or not, the sex scenes are the hardest part of the story for me to write! I want to make it as realistic as possible and not too outrageous (no fucking on top of the fridge or hanging from the balcony in my stories!).

Like someone else said I write the backstory and the plot before I do the sex scene... I have to be able to really concentrate on the story to write the "juicy part"!

And yes I do suffer burn out too. But I have a large folder of already written stuff so my readers don't suffer! smile
Burn out period at end off week. No time to write even if I could.

Which I have done a few times over the past few years (sex with a satyr in a library, sex with a tentacled horror from beyond). But my own desires tend to wall off some stuff and going weird only gets you so far. I mean, this Halloween comp should be an ideal opportunity for me, a longtime fan of pulp horror, to weird out and I'm just not feeling it right now. And even in terms of purely human sex, as I commented to someone in a black box conversation about this thread, S&M is a no go for me. I have no experience with it and much of it is really outside my comfort zone. Same with some of the more "out there" fetishes like golden showers. Even B&D is at the outer edge of my comfort zone and I won't go too far with it.
There's at least one person in this thread that knows the level of sex in my stories. That tends to be the minor side of my stories.
I do burn out. But I think that is the story as a whole. My characters tend to tell me how they want it as part of them telling me their story.

My main writings have been 3 series, 1 finished. 1 at a natural pause and 1 coming to a close. A total of 40 chapters so far and ~ 200k words. What has really helped me is taking a pause when needed and doing something completely different, much like some others have said.
My vignettes have not involved tentacles, yet. Then there are 2 competition entries, which are a step even further away.

I personally don't see an issue with building an erotic scene or atmosphere and taking it upstairs and then giving the participants their privacy, I've read a few stories that take this route.

very sad. i've been waiting for a on top of the fridge that's up on the balcony story from you for ages now. *mopes*

They're stories!? - just advance the timeline a little and make out the characters are older.

Hahaha I can see the title now - Tobias and the Raging Octopus that hitched a ride on a tea clipper from New Jersey.

I have hit some good patches and some bad ones. At one point I was churning the stories over and had a good batch lined up ready to go. Then I hit a bit of a wall. I wake up in the morning and a story comes to me, I have no problem thinking the scene and scenario through. In the evening when I want to write it up, its completely gone. Nothing remains. An inkling is there that reminds me I thought of it, but I cannot bring the detailed memories back and I can't be bothered to force it.

Some would say - all my stories are like that?! Ho-Hum.

It's probably because they are just stories and there is no real basis in reality. I find stories that are half true, easier to write. I shan't be delving into TENTACLE sex as no-one I know has any. Not on an intellectual level anyway. Though I have been known to be a sucker on occasion -

At the moment I have a block of flash stories that I'm working on slowly, adding to them, bit by bit, but longer ones I find harder. There's only so many ways any individual can get fucked - right!

This made me spit coffee... Go on Curvy, take it as a challenge

As for remembering, I often think of stuff at the most inopportune times, I make notes on my phone for use later. 1 story, was nearly done in full on it...

Your comment about only so many ways, has given me an idea...git! lol

I get burnt out often, that's why I write other stories that have no sex in them at all. Usually I can write two or three chapters of them and then I feel like writing erotica again. If I really don't feel like writing a sex scene I usually go the easy route by writing that they went to the room or the character got out a sex toy and then leaving it up to the readers to fill in the blanks as they may. They are categories for those situations.
