The mobster genre has been a Hollywood staple since in the 1930s. In the afterglow of the roaring 20's and the Great Depression, people seemed to latch on to the idea of the Robin Hood style anti-hero. Aside from classics like "Little Caesar" and "Public Enemy" hatred of banks after the Wall Street crash led to a public infatuation with bank robbers like John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson.

In the Mid 1930s however the Motion Picture Association of America instituted the Hays Code which regulated "moral conduct" of motion pictures. For the next 30 years this pretty much eliminated the entire mobster genre since it was seen as "promoting moral decay."

Since the early 1970's however the mafia genre started to pick up steam. From The Godfather, to Goodfellas, to The Departed, these movies have been one of the rare movie types that continues to be popular among both critics and audiences.

So what is your favorite mafia/mobster movie?

Now go get your fucking shine box!

John Travolta is starring in the upcoming John Gotti movie...

Is is just me or is it hard to take Travolta seriously after the Scientology stuff...
The first two Godfathers, I'd say. Not the most realistic, to be sure, but almost Shakespearean in their scope and feel with some brilliant writing and acting.

Then would come Scorsese's mob movies like Goodfellas and Casino. Less epic, more about the gritty lives of the guys in the trenches.
Bugsy Malone

You're right. Knowing he had himself hospitalized because of the millions of little beings in his elbow. But he is a pretty good actor. Really, Hollywood stars are the weirdest. If you remember back to your college days, the drama majors were the strangest on campus. At my university, even the art majors joked about drama majors being strange. And the art students said all their nude models came from the drama department.

I love mobster movies. The Departed, The Godfather parts I & II, Goodfellas, Casino, Wiseguys, etc. All those are too close to call for me. I loved 'em. And have thoroughly enjoyed many more. And I used to be hooked on The Sopranos.
Bugsy Malone from 1976

I was going to post a link to the trailer, but the entire cast is children.

Scott Baio and Jody Foster starred in it. Great soundtrack. Machine guns
shot whip cream, and people got pied in the face. LOL. The gangster
cars were pedal cars, like the Flintstones, but with pedals. Fun, fun movie.

But The Departed is a great movie.
I'd have to say that these jokers were certainly organized criminal enterprises. Amongst the first in America, in fact.

The same GQP demanding we move on from January 6th, 2021 is still doing audits of the November 3rd, 2020 election.
Does the De Palma Untouchables count? I mean, it was focussed more on Elliott Ness' team trying to bring down Al Capone but the backroom machinations of Capone and Frank Nitti played a big role.

Another great one!
CASINO!!! sharon stone and joe pesci gave AMAZING performances in this film. hell, i fell in love with ginger after her introduction:

how could you not see that train wreck coming and want to miss it?!

(love is strange was the PERFECT song choice for this scene!)

Say. Her. Name.

Goodfellas is my favorite by a long shot. Love that continuous shot as they enter the restaurant.
Goodfellas. If you really enjoy it, find the book, Wiseguys, that it is based on. You'll see how great of a job Scorsese did at bringing a true story to the big screen. Helps to have the writer do your screenplay, though. Ray Liotta listened to the tapes Henry Hill made for the writer, to get his voice down. The voice-over in the movie encouraged the team making Shawshank to make use of it as well.

The special edition with commentary and extras is really worth picking up.
This is probably one of my least favorite genres, but there are some I really do like;

Pulp Fiction
American History X
Fight Club
Reservoir Dogs
My Cousin Vinny

I have three famous stories, 2 recommended reads and have come in the top ten in two competitions~ Come in and make yourself at home.

Here are my top ten.

1. The Godfather
2. The Godfather Part 2
3. The Sting
4, The Usual Suspects
5, Key Largo
6. Miller's Crossing
7. The French Connection
8. Goodfellas
9. Little Caesar
10. On the Waterfront

Nice pick.

The true story of mafia hitman Richard Kulinski who died in prison in 2011. The term "pyschopath" get's thrown around often but this guy was an actual clinical psychopath.

Check out the documentary on Kulinski...

He was Polish though, no never eligible to become an actual member of La Cosa Nostra.
I love Goodfellas, but I think that Casino is probably the objectively best mafia movie. (And very underrated).

I do think that The Departed will be seen as a "classic in 15 or 20 years.
Scarface or Goodfellas
Once Upon A Time In America
Once Upon A Time In America
The Godfather, for me
Some Like It Hot - for laughs
The Godfather films - for operatic stories
The Untouchables - for Kevin Costner and Sean Connery
The godfather trilogy
It’s in a class of its own
No contest...The Godfather
The Godfather!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Godfather for its total story and event. The Sting for its “technology”
In addition to the Goodfellas, though this is not a movie, the video game Mafia III tells a fantastic story despite rather repetitive game play. It takes place in the post-Vietnam era in a fictionalized city based off of New Orleans. It really emerges the player into it's world and deals with many different themes.
