My all time favorite is The Magnificent Seven, with a great cast and a great musical score. I remember seeing it for the first time at the drive in with my family and a huge bag of Mom's popcorn. It's a remake of The Seven Samurai, which I saw much later, in college. Also a very fine movie.

The Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis also gets my highest praise.

Deadwood, the HBO series, was awesome.

I loved the original Lonesome Dove series, with Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones

I like both versions of True Grit....different eras, though

My favorite western star is John Wayne. Memorable roles in Stagecoach, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and The Searchers, but he was in a lot of fine westerns.

A guilty pleasure is the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns. They haven't held up over time, but at the time they came out they rocked.

The Outlow Josey Wales

Unforgiven

Young Guns

Big Jake

Tombstone. Val Kilmer was perfect as Doc Holliday

There is one more that I am really trying to remember. I've been wanting to watch it again, but I can't remember the name. I am hoping someone will post a name of a movie here that I recognize as it.

1) The Missing with Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchet. While at times I felt like I was watching a made-for-t.v.-western, it nevertheless combined several elements to make for a very good character driven western, even if Westerns aren't to your taste.

2) Tombstone. Not quite the perfect Western, but the next best thing. How not with a top actor like Kurt Russell backed by Sam Elliot and Val Kilmer with the last in an iconic role that was probably his most prolific.

3) It has yet to appear in theaters, and while not a Leonardo D. fan by any stretch, The Revenant looks promising. If the rest of the film is as good as the cinematography is in the previews, this may be one of the better films in years, by any standard or genre.

Please list your 'greatest movie westerns of all time'...

Buz Bono's Greatest Movie Westerns Of All Time:

1. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
(The movie credits say 'Introducing Lee Marvin'/ He plays Liberty Valance, the really evil bad guy in the movie, but somehow he's fun, entertaining and cool, and he calls everyone 'Dude'. It also stars greats John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. This classic black and white is really awesome! Directed by John Ford)

2. True Grit (the original with John Wayne, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor portraying Rooster Gogburn)

3. Tombstone (I love this awesome movie with Kurt Russell playing Wyatt Earp, Val Kilmer is great as Doc Holiday, and Sam Elliott as Virgil Earp, plus super sexy MILF, Dana Delany plays Wyatt Earp's love interest. This has great action!

4. The Searchers (This western super epic stars John Wayne, directed by John Ford)

5. Rooster Cogburn (The interaction between John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn is electric, a true classic!)

6. The Outlaw Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood is amazing in this)

7. The Longriders (an awesome movie about the real American outlaws, The James Gang. Brothers James and Stacy Keach play Jesse and Frank James, the Carradine brothers play the Younger brothers.)

8. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Sergio Leon'e spaghetti western classic with Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef)

9. Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid (Paul Newman and Robert Redford portray these real life outlaws)

10. Unforgiven (This dark and violent movie with Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman; won the Academy Award for Best Movie)

11. Stagecoach (an awesome black and white 1939 release starring John Wayne and John Carradine, father of the Carradine brothers, directed by John Ford)

12. Dances With Wolves (A great epic with Kevin Costner, fantastic portrayal of the Souix Indians of the Great Plains, awesome cinematography)

13. Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino recreated a fantastic 'spaghetti western' style movie, very violent)

14. Wyatt Earp (Kevin Costner's version of the Gunfight at the OK Corral)

15. 3:10 To Yuma (great action, stars Christian Bale and Russell Crowe)

16. The Magnificent Seven (an all-time western classic with Steve McQueen, Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson, James Coburn and more...

17. Silverado (a fun action packed western with Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, Scott Glenn and John Cleese)

19. Pale Rider (Clint Eastwood is a ghost again!)

21. The Wild Bunch (A Sam Peckinpah shoot 'em up with an all-star cast, tons of action!)

22. Blazing Saddles (Yes! A Mel Brooks comedy!)

23. High Noon (A black and white western classic with Gary Cooper as the sheriff of a town full of wimps!)

24. Once Upon A Time In The West (another spaghetti western epic by Sergio Leone, with an all-star cast)

25. Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid (A Sam Peckinpah movie starring Bob Dylan, the singer, and Kris Kristofferson)

The only reason I didn't have Lonesome Dove on my list is because I only listed movies. I have to say that I consider the original Lonesome Dove with Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, to be the greatest TV miniseries of all time and especially the greatest western TV miniseries. Also, The Sacketts was a great TV western miniseries.

I agree with your list, Buz. But I have to add the campy, comedic western, Cat Balllou. Lee Marvin's performance was epic.

Mclintock - I've watched a dozen times (maybe more). A perfect John Wayne movie.
Rio Bravo - Another Wayne classic.
Magnificent Seven - Great Cowboy story
Stagecoach -
Silverado -

Maybe the best 'Western' was the mini-series Lonesome Dove. It stayed true to the book (which was great) and the casting was totally inspired.

I LOVE Westerns!!!

Most of my FAVES have been cited above, ('The Long Riders' is one of my favourite movies in any genre EVER! It's actually a fantastically ROMANTIC movie...) but I think both 'The Wild Bunch' and 'A Fistful Of Dynamite' deserve a mention if they haven't been already...

As a teenager, I read James Mitchener's novel 'Centennial' which led to a fascination with all things Native American which lasts to this day... I have a few fave movies which specifically consider Native American culture, (invariably seen through the prism of White/Anglo culture) but, 'Eagle's Wing' (starring a very young Martin Sheen), 'Jerimiah Johnson' (starring Robert Redford), a movie called 'Black Robe' (Dr. Bruce Beresford) and an old TV mini-series called 'Tom Horn' which touched on General Crook's war against the Apache in the late 1800s all resonated with me.

I'll tell you a story...

In 1991, there appeared a TV version of Evan S Connel's General Custer book, 'Son Of The Morning Star'... (Many historians HATE that book but I really liked it...) The TV series wasn't as good, BUT, the costumes were AMAZING!!! Now, at the time, I had rather a lot of money... I contacted the company who had done the costuming for the series and it turned out you could order custom repro hand made Native American clothing. I ordered a Dakota Sioux war shirt... (REAL deer-skin, beads, quills, REAL HUMAN HAIR as scalp-locks...) A museum piece, basically... (I could have bought a brand-new motorbike for how much this fucking thing cost...) The kind of thing you put in a glass-case, really... CERTAINLY you'd never WEAR it...

I wore it only WEEKS after it was delivered at a gig the band and I did in Ireland. Hot and perspiring after the gig, I took off the shirt backstage and proceeded to get rather distracted, throwing it into a corner. The next morning I woke up and realised I'd left it behind!!! I RACED to the venue, (which wasn't open obviously,) and after much phone-calling, got someone to let me in to collect it. Guess?

You're right!

(I never saw it again! GONE!)

Actually, I haven't thought about that in YEARS! (I'm upset NOW!) God, it was SO BEAUTIFUL! Let me see if I can find an image... (Not the exact one, they were CUSTOM MADE!!!) *SOBS!*

(Mine looked cooler!!!)

xx SF

Oh, 'Little Big Man' starring Dustin Hoffman, (and a SIMMERING Faye Dunaway) should get a shout out, too...

Chuck E Poo: "It already did, Steve...Several times... As did everything else you cited..."

Me: "Sorry, I'm still pissed off about the shirt... Gotta be honest though, people here KNOW their shit!!!"

Everyone: "YES, WE DO, MR PATRONIZING!!!"

Me: "THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT!!!"
