Doll suggested it, and so...
if it's not Kanye, who IS the biggest Rock Star on the Planet? feel free to include anyone that YOU consider a Rock Star - use your own definition, but dammit, defend it,
and yeah, Hip Hop is legit,
don't be hatin' on it
all you mother freaking rockers
you gawkers and you mockers
give my roots a break
this is the real deal ain't no fake
proved it's not a fad
and now you're just making us mad
Hell, DMC and PE in the Hall
of Fame now, so y'all
better welcome us with welcome arms
cause we ain't gonna stay on the farm
we up here in your face
part of the human race
only doing it with love
it's just a gentle shove
so people, come unite
and tell me who is right
is Kanye West the shit?
or is he just full of it
is Jimmy Page a god?
or just another fraud
(notice i'm not sayin what i'm feelin'
that Led Zepplin did some stealin'
from the brothers playing blues
that's just between me and yous).
and yeah, this girl can battle, yo!

There are no rock stars anymore. The rock star died out in the 90s. The last real one was Kurt Cobain. They can try and try but...no the rock star is dead. For many many reasons.
I did not answer your question...PJ Harvey.
Are we going with living or are we including the dead?
All the great ones are dead or old. I guess that's why I've gone country!
I would argue the case that Ozzy Osbourne is the biggest living rock star on the planet. He is still producing music, although not the same level as before, its definately rock, and I think everyone knows who he is.
Metallica is a potential runner up, but although I would argue less people would know who Lars Ulrich, or James Hettfield are.
OK, since we are talking the biggest living Rock Star, not who I think is best or my favorite or most talented or who I want to fuck, I would have to say without a shadow of a doubt in my mind it's Bono.
U2 is one of the rare bands that is accepted in most cultures and by lovers of most music genres. Not to mention how he is revered for his humanitarian work.
So for me its definitely Bono, and I dont think ot is close!
For me living it has to be Jimmy Page.....The man is a god! I once not only heard him play "Stairway" in a local pub, but bought him a double JD for which he just nodded his head in recognition. I thought myself a quite cool guy at the time, but that bloke is a master.
The Black Keys and Jack White are pretty hot tickets in this era. I recently saw the Black Keys play in front of 75,000 people.
Pick just one? Jeeeeee-zuz, that's a tough call. For the modern day, and I know I'm carbon dating myself by stating it, I'd go with Bono for the reasons others have stated above. For pre-modern, for lack of a better term, I'll say it's a tie between the guitar god Jimi's, Page and Hendrix.
If you haven't seen it already there's a youtube series of President's Ball concerts (induction ceremonies?) that those reading this thread may find interesting. I stumbled upon them at the start of an evening last winter and was quickly sucked into the depths of a youtube vortex. I was never much of a Zep fan but after seeing the cover performances and a few associated interviews my appreciation for their talent and influence increased.
Maybe the question should be. Who is the most relevant rock star/band?
Gonna get the oaktown beatdown, literary two by four to make you frown
Put you down on the ground holding your belly, legs made of jelly, drooling at the telly
Unable to focus as I do my hocus pocus up in your face, no saving grace
Gonna make you eat space, rat race trumps doilies and lace
So yeah, English Red, take a hint from this sprite
Get it right, walk the line, cause if you deviate gonna terminate
You with my wit and my grace, taking it up a level and revevling
In your reckoning, show you how we do it in the dubs
Yeah, that’s the rubs, girl you can’t fling the shit if you ain’t lived in it
Neck deep, hands held high, breathing it in, drinking it down
Twenty four seven, making the rounds
From Fruitvale to Eastside, High street to Hell
Walking the walk, talking the talk, midnight on International
And now, what the fuck, Lady X is stepping up
Taking the mic, think she can rap, take a nap, you’re no longer a badass
Lost your cred when you got wed down there in Dallas
Thing you should know, I’m the queen of the green
Don’t forget it, move out of my way, cause this is my scene
Bitches bend over, you’re gonna get spanked, like Tom Hanks, pulling rank
Red thinks she’s OG, Oh Gosh, Oh Golly, she must have dropped a molly
Polly Anna and Posh, Pride and Prejudice, can’t mosh, can’t take it
Can’t even shake it, she just fake it, while Blondie can rake it
But I don’t need the bling, doing my own thing
Writing the book, got the look, doing Disney like Hunter
S. Thompon, for all you sisters and brothers
Got a hard core edge to my style, make you smile, just before I cap your ass
Little ginger girl better get out of my way, and make it fast, not gonna last.
bring it.
