I would never read the first chapter of anything until I'm pretty sure the rest of it is posted...
I forgot to mention, that it all depends on who the author is. If I am new to the author, no. I won't make the effort. If it is an author I have read before and enjoyed it for the various reasons I enjoy stories, then yes. I probably would make the effort. But there are very few authors who fall into that group.

I know for me, I love looking at that one man's tree (can never remember his name, the one, where he takes the picture looking up at it? So ethereal, quiet and calming that picture) and usually click to look at his profile often.
I think it has to do with the fact that many women don't really care if there are naked photos or not in a person's profile or if the avatar has some form of nudity. For me at least, I go with what I find interesting. If a person makes a great post, I look at their profile. If a person has a curious avatar, I go looking.

I have read some amazing first parts, even second parts to stories; here and on other sites. But then the remaining parts take the authors way too long to post. And I get tired of waiting. So I just do not bother with serial stories, or stories done in parts.
When I write, I write the whole story first before submitting it, and submit it as one complete story as one entry. I do feel that if the story is strong enough, no matter the length, readers will read it. I've even been told a couple of times to split some of my stories up into various parts and resubmit them. Which I do not feel comfortable doing. So I do not, and keep them as one, as one read.
But I do think the category of "Novels" scare some readers off.
Take two stories..
"A Dream to Build a Life On" 1,125 views- Novels two years
"Self Discovery" 6,047 views- Bisexual a couple of months
Both are similar in length, yet, I receive so many more messages about "Discovery" then I do on "A Dream". Where in my personal opinion, "A Dream" is a better story.
So all I say to it is... meh... to each their own.
