The Micro category has only two basic criteria: 100 words and a complete story. Unfortunately, the latter requirement has become rather mushy since Luch v2 launched. It may have attracted more writers and more readers, but it has diminished the form and its inherent challenge. A true Micro should be hard earned by the writer, not just dashed off.

There is and always has been a place for stories "of the moment." The Flash Category is completely open provided the story is 100 to 1000 words long. It is ideally suited for this sort of thing. I would suggest offering it there.

Thank you. Years ago I burned myself out chasing an Omnium only to have them once again expand the number of categories just as I was about to grasp it.

I did this to myself as I refuse to post an inferior effort simply for a badge. And so I stopped.

This micro fiction is one I wont further pursue. I won't try to write a quality and engaging complete story in 100 words. In my view, any story good enough to post in 100 words deserves to be fleshed out to 1000 or more. I give you full respect for being able to do that but I cannot.

That said, I'm quite proud of the 100 words I wrote but it seems likely they wont be shared here.

More is the pity.

I admit it did hurt my pride. I haven't had a story outright rejected since the very first one I submitted on Lush back in 2009 or so. Part of it is my ego, to be certain

But truly I have to question that requirement. I wrote the piece specifically as a moment in time. It not being ‘complete’ was the entire point. It was meant to capture the emotional impact of sex. Had they said I failed to do that, I'd have respected the decision. But to say its not complete?

Its as complete as it was ever meant to be. But hell. I always had a hard time writing quickie sex in 1k words. I'm way too long-winded to do that in 100 words ns not post a piece of crap. All the more respect to those who can but I won't try it again

Meh. It was returned for not being a complete story. I'm unsure who decides what constitutes complete. But whatever.

Its uncomfortable being on the other side of a rejection letter. My pride is a bit dented.

And I must say, my Micro was called a snapshot of bliss, and in that sense it was complete.

Maybe I'll resubmit it as a poem.

I'm rather agrivated at the moment. I won't be submitting anything forcibly abbreviated just to satisfy someone else's idea of what is complete.

Well, I just submitted my first Micro-fiction. They, at least, have the advantage of being a quick write. Indibtt know how long it takes to publish thaes days but the wait is on. 🤷‍♂️

I’ve found an old story I never completed about a gay baseball player. After reading it again I’m not sure why I walked away from it. I just need to finish the ending and it will be ready to go. So, just maybe I will have something new to post.

As those who knew me were aware, I worked in aircraft manufacturing for 34 years before I retired. And I’m absolutely horrified by the way Boeing cheated the law. As one who managed an Engine Nut production line I can tell you it’s absolutely inexcusable that they allowed so many safety violations to occur. This was not a mistake. The system prevents mistakes. The ONLY way all of this happened was a clear and intentional disregard for the most basic AS9001 quality requirements demanded by the entire industry. The fact no one has been jailed is astonishing to me. Unfortunately, a company that big finds if cheaper to pay off fines and lawsuits then spend the money and reputation required to correct these pandemic flaws in their production.

If I want to drive all the way to Fairview, about 2 hours to the east, there is a place that specializes in what they call ‘California Style’ Mexican food and it’s what I’m used to. I never knew Cali had its own Mexican menu but apparently they do.

The thing I hate most here is also what I love most. It’s extremely rural. There isn’t much here which after a life in Ca madness appeals to me but the options for eating out are pretty weak. I love to cook though and we had a great kitchen put in so I’m doing more cooking than I have in years. I think Simmie is ready to smack me with a pan as I’m in her way all the time.

Well, we are an hour east of Memphis and these are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. We looked at a place in Kentucky. I really wanted that one but the place needed too much work.

San Francisco was the only place I’ve been where the average person was this kind.

I just miss decent Mexican food. Everyone here uses ground beef instead of shredded. It’s all like variations of Taco Bell.

Trump and his minions use lies about immigrants and the LGBTQ community to instill racist and bigoted fear in their constituent’s. They use this the same way Hitler villainized Jews and Gypsies.

I would never have believed his lies would be accepted by so many but he’s tapped into the (formally) hidden racist undercurrent in the US and brought it out into the mainstream. But even more horrifying is the almost historic support polls show he has in the black and Hispanic communities. They seem to appreciate his pseudo-tough guy image. But why even 45% of woman poll as supporting his misogyny is unfathomable to me.

Clearly this was never the nation I thought it was. And I was never all that impressed with my fellow Americans intellect in the first place

I learned by reading your stories... especially the last couple ... to work harder in those uncomfy categories. I saw you didn't just throw sh*t out there to get in the other categories, but put effort into each one. As far as comps ... it is subjective. Most of entries will be grammatically, technically good. So, really it is just what storyline captured the interest of the judges. Every entry is terrific.

Write for you! Please yourself (and your lovely wife ) and your story was worth writing. So are so close to that badge ... take a break if needed ... then come get it!!! Even if you don't have it forever ... take a picture of when you did have it and be very very proud of yourself! Even with the prolific, you and Simmie are in a very select group to have accomplished that badge! I applaud you both. Some of these categories are fucking hard to write in. You inspire me. Take Ping-a-ling's medical fetish title he suggested and write an amazing story :)

However, think of it this way... you are only two stories away. A far cry from most everyone except your fellow omnium badgers. Write the damn stories, get your damn badge, and quit your damn whining. It’s not like Admin is intentionally adding categories to prevent you from getting your damn badge. That’s something I would do.

You can thank me for the tough love later.

And when another category or two gets added, you’ll write the damn story or stories to stay omni-current. The new category, like every new category, will challenge the always-striving-to-be-a-better-writer in you.

I DO, or at least did have the badge and have lost it once again. I feel that this badge no longer means what it did the first time I earned it. In real life, people who win medals or awards don't get them taken away because the rules of the sport or game have changed. I understand why Nicola doesn't want to create a new omnium type badge every time they add another category(ies), but it really is frustrating to keep seeing the badge disappear. I had suggested at one point, instead of the omnium badge, it get replaced with a Category 10, 20, 30, etc badge. Nicola even had a design for it. But it never surfaced. Instead, a Prolific Writer badge got instituted to indicate 80% of the categories have been covered. But that is another badge that can disappear when new categories are added.

If there was a Category level badge instead, unless the author themselves deleted a story, the badge would never go away. Once you reached that level, it would always be achieved. the badge could include the total number of categories completed (similar to the author badge which shows the total number of stories). That way, anyone could tell at a glance how many categories had been completed and when they reached the level 50 badge, a 54 or 55 total (currently) would indicate the equivalent of the omnium badge. (The Fantasy is an optional category to be awarded the onmium badge.) Perhaps if that number is achieved, the number could display in a different color like gold or red.
