Gav is working fast on our new database server, which is the main technical issue we have currently. It is causing sporadic site delays / crashes.

We estimate the new server will be operational in mid June, after some extensive testing.

Once we've switched over to the new form of document storage and handling, the servers should be very fast and scalable. At the moment we're pushing the limits in terms of how many page views we can serve.

Our server handled around 23 million page views last month, that's not bad for one machine.

Please bear with us, it's being taken care of

Thanks! We work hard on the site.

Google analytics don't show us hits (not anywhere I can find anway). Pageviews are different:

Technical definition of a hit

Each file sent to a browser by a web server is an individual hit.

Technical definition of a pageview

A pageview is each time a visitor views a page on your website, regardless of how many hits are generated. Pages are comprised of files. Every image in a page is a separate file. When a visitor looks at a page (a pageview), they may see numerous images, graphics, pictures etc. and generate multiple hits.

For example, if you have a page with 10 pictures, then a request to a server to view that page generates 11 hits (10 for the pictures, and one for the html file). A page view can contain hundreds of hits. This is the reason that we measure page views and not hits.

So if a typical page on lush has say 20 images / components that require downloading, including the page itself, we will be serving 20 x 23 million = 460 million hits. Not really a surprise that a single server with mirrored drive can't cope!

A bump for the people who have been writing to Gav, complaining that this free site is down so frequently of late.

The problem (MS SQL) has been identified, Gav is in the process of totally re-writing the backend document storage system. It's not something that can be done overnight.

Please bear with us for the next 3 or 4 weeks or so.

Did you say Lush has a problem with its backend???

Not sure what that has to do with the server not working, but I guess Gav knows what's up...

You know you want it, you know you need it bad...get it now on Amazon.com...

If thats Lush's backend, I don't see any problem with it!
Otherwards, I got no complaints, I figured it was my danged computer. the thing is about 5 years old after all.
Oh, there is one small complaint; the cost of this site is killing me

Thank you.

Even with the existing setup, it is only ever down for a short time, when the load gets incredibly high. I'd say we still have over 99% uptime, despite the few complaints to the contrary.

Gav is over 50% of the way now with Mongo, it *should be* downhill from here.

Go Gav go!!!

"Mongo"? Uh Oh.....

Yes, I needed it explaining to me too.

Summary: Instead of paying Microsoft $4000 per server, for each MS SQL installation you have their database software on, MongoDB is open source (free) and quicker. So we can give MS the flick
