I was just wondering because I see all variations of this in stories, what is the proper spelling and past tense use of this word?

I prefer 'come' and 'came' for the verb. I'd also use 'come' to indicate ejaculate, but there are so many other more interesting and enjoyably descriptive ways of saying it.

I agree with many of the more prolific erotica writers out there, 'cum' is slang in written porn. Or, if you know Latin, it's a preposition.

'Cummed' is just... wrong.

A quick web search turned up this:

"Come" is definitely the verb, meaning to orgasm. For example, "I'm going to come", "I'm coming", or "I came". The past tense is always "came". It's never ever "comed".

As for "cum", it's the noun meaning semen or sperm. For example, "I shot my cum all over her tits", or "my cock was oozing pre-cum through my pants".

I hate using "cum" as the verb, such as "cumming" or "cummed", but as a story moderator, I'll let it slide. The one that really chaps my ass though is when people use "cum" in place of "orgasm" or "climax" etc. For example, "I had such a good cum." *shudders*
My latest story is a racy little piece about what happens when someone cute from work invites you over to watch Netflix and Chill.

I hate, hate, hate any form of slang, the only one you'll catch me do is "lol" (not in a story, but ever) I use come and came. I despise the word "cum" to me, it is very juvenile. But, I don't judge those who choose to use it. Everyone has their own style of writing and spelling.

Wrongedy wrong wrong wrong, yes. I tend to avoid the past tense of "cum" altogether, by using phrases like "he finished up" or "her orgasm broke over her" or something, anything to avoid "cummed" or the even more cringeworthy "camed", both of which I've seen in actual stories posted on Lush. I like Danielle's answer, too, if you're looking for a single word in the past tense to refer to a male orgasm.

I prefer the cum/came combo.

I've never liked the use of 'come' versus 'cum' simply because 'cum' is just shorthand for 'succumbed', which when used in a sexual sense is to 'succumb to pleasure'.

I get that came is just past-tense of come, but it makes more sense to me than cummed. *Cringes*

I never knew this. Thanks for sharing!

I use come as a verb, such as "I'm going to come." and cum as the noun, "His cum covered her tongue."
I don't think that I've ever used came or cummed, speaking of past actions, I usually find other words to describe it.

Show your working on this! This sounds like one of those things that gets made up, then someone else says it and then people suddenly think it's fact- you know, like wikipedia.

I'll be happily proved wrong on this but for the moment I'm giving this "fact" the skunk-eye

Give it what you want.

Just my interpretation is all. Take it at face value or dismiss it...whichever tickles your peach.

There are lots of variations as well as origins surrounding 'cum', including some guy with the last name Cum or some other such variant using semen as ink, so don't just take my word for it.

It's been tossed around as a theory, so it's kinda what I go with. And it seems more feasible than anything else.

I like cumming myself. I also appreciate the simple and straightforward cum. Paste tense is came.

Come (verb present tense)
Came (verb past tense)

I hate the non-word "cum." It smacks of semi-literacy.

If one is looking for a word to describe a substance, "ejaculate" works well enough for me. "Semen" if it's a man. If one is looking to describe an action, what's wrong with "orgasm?"

"Cum" is Latin for "with," which I suppose cries out for a pun and/or double-entendre, but I'm too tired to figure one out. Be my guest.

Yes, it does. If axe was used in a story and it was supposed to be asked/ask it would be fixed by the verifying moderator or returned to the author if there were too many errors in the story. Ain't would be acceptable in dialogue only.

You could say the same about tits being semi-literate teats.

The intentional misspelling of come goes back to the seventies. It was used by pornographers for no other reason than to make the word as an idiom for orgasm seem that much dirtier and tawdrier. It works, for the most part. It's cum to be more and more common in usage, to the point where threads like this pop up where everyone asks each other what is the proper "grammar" behind the word. But there is no "official" grammatical usage of cum, even though cummed just does seem wrong because misspelling the word doesn't magically transform it into a regular verb. Of course it's used as a noun just as much, too.

Some writers and editors have this thing where one is supposed to be the verb form and the other, noun form. And I've seen educated, experienced professionals in the industry argue heatedly about it from either direction. But...the only real rule is what the writer determines. The only thing, really, is just to be consistent in how you use it. Until the MLA accepts the word into common usage and lays down "official" rules, it's open season. And if such a thing ever actually happens, the rules will likely be based on whatever the most common practices have been.

The responses here are fairly standard. Almost every thread of this nature, no matter where it appears, trends toward "come" as the verb and "cum" as the noun, with "come" being acceptable for the noun as well.

But you can rest assured that there are numerous authors looking at the screen and muttering that "cum" is a perfectly legitimate verb in all its tenses. They typically won't say anything because nearly every post in the thread is looking down its nose at them, up to the level of treating them as sub-human.

They're not alone, either. I've had feedback many times in the past where readers dinged me for using "come" as the verb for orgasm with the same fervor you see when people mess up their/there/they're. I've had people blast me with a 1 over it.

So there are segments of the readership out there who not only consider "cum" legitimate, but believe it to be the only proper usage. ( This despite major dictionaries providing definitions to prove them wrong, while many don't have "cum" defined in this capacity yet. )

English is a language that is always changing, and what might be proper usage in one age will appear antiquated to readers in the future. I tend to agree with Wil, whilst accepting that all variations are equally valid. For myself, I try to write prose or poetry which is elegant as well as arousing.
