Is it time to end all royal families?

As an American l think the entire royal family thing is wasteful holding on to the past. They have no political use. They exist for pageantry and formal ceremony, but mostly serve as tabloid fodder.

Several nations still hold onto this antiquated tradition. Surely, the money spent on royalty could be spent on something useful instead.

I believe the richest royal family is the one in Thailand.

Do y'all think the world would be better off without royal families? Without them, we'd eliminate a lot of silly fluff that wastes TV time and maybe tabloids could publish actual news instead.

It is time to end all the world’s elitists—which they belong to, so yes

I don't see their purpose since country's are ruled by PMs or Presidents anyway. But I don't know much about these things, so I won't speak any further.

Definitely yes. Its an archaic hold with the feudal past. Not only that, I'd bet the vast majority of the existing royal lineage ultimately comes from the success of war, betrayal and murder. Their properties should be turned into museums, parks and accommodation for the less fortunate. Then they can work and pay taxes like the rest of us.

Are we talking a French style solution? With live streaming? Amazon and Netflix would be all over that and earn the countries far more than the royals are worth.

As an American, I don't think it's my place to tell other countries what to do here, especially "all." By which I mean to say, it's up to the citizens (or subjects, as the case may be) to decide.

First off, I second this.

And let's be honest, the US has not exactly been a paragon when it comes to governments in recent years. Maybe some introspection would be more useful than throwing stones in a glass house.

That said, I live in a constitutional monarchy (Canada) and wish we could find a good replacement. I am largely happy with our parliamentary system so maybe the German model where we replace our monarch and their representative, the governor-general, with a ceremonial presidency.

The mess to the South has soured me on an executive presidency, though. Or at least I would want even more robust checks and balances than the US already has. And, let's face it, that executive presidency probably costs as much or more than most monarchies.

Some people like monarchies, they can give a sense of reassuring longevity.

Battles may be won or lost, economies rise or fall but a monarchy is a living connection through history.

Just imagine how divided Britain would have been through the Brexit crisis if it didn't have a monarchy?

Can't trust the political parties they're all Liars. Can't trust the newspapers, they're all owned by billionaires who want to keep us in the dark. You could put your trust in Auntie Beeb but the tories have spent decades gutting its internal controls and trying to prepare it to be either privatised or closed.

You could at least have a certain amount of trust in the Queen.

Didn't work for me but it did work for a lot of people.
