I've dealt with contractors before. Get in writing how much and how long the job will take. And certainly don't pay full amount upfront. If he doesn't do it in the time frame he says, then you have proof. Make him commit.

Who am I kidding, working from home is a day off
There's two kinds of contractors in this world,
Ones that do, and ones that don't.

I've asked 5 carpenters to come over and quote for work which needs doing on the house - a verandah - not a small job, at least a week or two's work.

1 didn't show up at all, and didn't leave a message. 1 turned up 2 days late.

Out of those 4 that measured up, only 2 have given me quotes, after 3 weeks! The first quote was double the second, using the same materials and spec.

I've sent an email and left a phone message with the second carpenter asking when he can start, and he's not replied in 3 days.

Do they have so much work that they can treat customers like this? If I treated my clients in the same way, I'd be fired!

I truly am sorry about your contractor woes Nicola.
Seems these 5 guy's, along with a few others are giving the whole lot a bad name.
The problem all started back in the early 80's.
Unemployment got so bad, anybody with a hammer magically turned into a contractor over night.
Many still remain today, and it seems it started a new trend.
Armed with only a little knowledge, most anyone can claim to be a carpenter, unlike maybe a mechanic, or a rocket scientist.
I was building homes with my father and 3 brothers from the time I was 14 years old, and working in his shop before that.
I broke off on my own back in 1994, give or take a few years, and believe me, I never could afford to: not show up.
One thing I never liked was investing 60 hours on a free estimate only to lose the job to some scab.
Fortunately, I did most my work locally for friends, and relatives. Word of mouth does wonders.
Soon, my free estimate days were over. Being an honest, well developed craftsman, It became; Bill, just do it please, and bill me later.
I'm pretty much retired now. I only work for good friends, or special people.
And to me, your kinda special. I mean who ever heard of a classy sex site, till lush came along?
Bravo Nicola!

If there was any way I could help you out Nicola, I surly would.
If you have further trouble with this guy, send me his Phone#, I'll straiten his ass out.

Best regards,
Bill Ott
