I call it whatever it really is....I drink more Dr Pepper than anything else, so I say I am going to get a Dr Pepper.
Generically, soda. But usually specific, i.e., diet coke, diet root beer or diet ginger ale (my favorites)
Mostly I say fizzy or cola.
But it depends much if the person you're asking lives in north-west, south, or east Germany.
We don't generally say coke, soda or pop when referring to the American soft drinks or German fruit drinks.
Carbonated fruity soft drinks like the orange, grape, strawberry, lemon, lime are called Fanta, Brause, fizzy or limo.
Royal crown, dr. pepper, pepsi, coca cola, root bier, most everyone I know says "cola" or calls them by their actual name.
Any cola that ist not the darker color, like the 7-up or sprite, we just say "sprite".
If speaking in general I say Coke. If I am placing a specific order then I use the correct brand name or variety.
I would use the generic soda usually. If feeling cheerful I would say soda pop. If back East I would ask for a tonic. Then, to make sure I am getting what I want or giving what they want, I would ask "what kind?' to find out the specific thing.
I use Cola or soda, depending on what I am ordering/asking for and then specify more if the ask!

If I don't know which of the brands are the house - Pepsi or Coke - I just say cola. Growing up further south you always said Coke.
Yes, growing up southern..you ask does anyone want a coke?, if they say yes...then you ask what flavor...does not make it the right way to do it, but itwas..the way to do it. So do you want a coke, well yes, do we have a grape? See how easy that is, really!
Brit here so I’d say fizzy drink when regrouping more than one kind other than that, I just use the brand name
