I grew up in New England and until the 1990's, it was called TONIC. You could pull into almost any restaurant or drive-in and the advertisement for any flavor soda was Tonic. Now most of the population is from another state in or near the cities. You really have to go deep into the country-side to meet the real New Englanders now.QNLxTdvUJiqkC9Hj

I recall taking a bus trip from Missouri to Massachusetts in 1973. I had just got out of the Navy and was traveling with my Grandmother to visit relatives back East. In Boston we stayed with my Great Aunt. I was amused by them calling all soft drinks tonic.

I do love language and the study of linguistics. It was my minor in college, while my major was English.

Personally, I still call soft drinks of any kind soda. Or the brand name, of course.

From the UK!

Soda is like fizzy water.
Coke is specifically Coca-Cola (or the cheap equivalent cola)
Pop is something the older generation say when they mean any fizzy sweet drinks.
Tonic is soda with quinine in it, made for Gin & Tonics.

We pretty much call a spade a spade here, so whatever the fizzy stuff is we'll call it by it's name; lemonade, coke, fanta, sprite, whatever.

Soda! Though it's generally called pop where I come from.

Not know about the west, but in every European country I've been,
We call soft drinks by their name. Coke=Coke, Dr. Pepper=Dr. Pepper, Pepsi=Pepsi...etc.

Except some I know call a Club Soda as just Soda.

And if ya in a pub drinking?
We call alcoholic drinks that have soft drinks in them, or with any drink that has bubbles, as a Fizzy.

Example: Ordering a Bourbon and Coke drink, we would say Bourbon Fizzy,
unless we wanted it mixed with a certain soft drink.
But I not normally see that, just order it Fizzy mostly.

Grew up calling it a pop; however now in the midwest it is soda.

Pop is the usual term where I live, though I do use soda occasionally myself. Coke is, of course, a specific brand/flavour of pop/soda.

Soda. Unless its not available, always drink diet soda. Yes I know its bad for you. But life is too short to be overly concerned about everything that MIGHT (my emphasis) kill you or make you sick. I learned a long, long time ago not to let something that might happen paralyze me from doing something I want to do or like to do. That's the reason I like to ride motorcycles and am an active Iron Butt Association member with over 35 rides to my credit including a Bun Burner 3000 GOLD ride (back to back 1500 miles in 24 hours days).

I've always known it as pop. No matter where i live it will always be pop.
Anything and everything that I don't wish to consume is known as holy water.
