Id love to have polished pretty nails, but working in a kitchen means constant washing. Nail polish can chip and end up in someone's mouth. Food in my nails is gross, so they are short. I make up up for it with my tootsies.. Soft, polished, well cared for.
I work in construction testing concrete, soils and asphalt. I understand that keeping your nails in perfect order isn't always possible depending on the work each person does but that shouldn't be an excuse for crappy hygiene.
If I have asked a woman out on a date I an going to shave, shower, floss and brush and dress appropriately for the occasion. All of my clothing will be clean and there will be no holes or ragged edges. If we are going someplace that requires me to wear a suit then I will wear a suit that fits and is in the current style.
If I invite my date to my house then my house will spotless, the bed freshly made with clean sheets and the dog freshly bathed.
The reason I am going to make these extra efforts (and they aren't really all that extra) is to show her that I respect her and so she knows I am a person that won't embarrass her in public.
I believe that this is really the main thrust of this thread; Be careful how you present yourself because others will see and form their opinions of you based on that presentation.
It should be natural to practice good hygiene, not just for special occasions or to make a good, yet false impression. My fingernails are a magnet for dirt and can get dirty while I sleep. It's a pet peeve to see them that way, so I'm very meticulous about grooming them and will shower if necessary, just to get them clean.
It disgust me to see an otherwise sexy woman with crappy nails. If she works outdoors, should invest in a pair of gloves or spend more time pruning if she expects to want to be touched by a respectable man. If the polish chips before salon day, just go ahead and rub some acetone and don't pose for any pics until your shit is tight!
I am working in my garden as a daily routine, i wear gloves but the dirt still gets in.. What i could never do is then go and work in the kitchen to feed my family without washing and brushing my nails until they are clean...its a hygiene thing... and personal if i am going to stick my fingers in my pussy for a photo (yeah i think that is a little to much for me right now), they would be extremely clean, cut and filed to ensure i didn't scratch myself let along that hygiene issue again.
Feet always look great with perfect painted nails. and you get to wear anything on your feet then and not worry about how they look. but i can't stand seeing scaly feet..yuck, pumice is only 30 cents to give your feet the fresh feel and look. you only get one set, and they have to hold you up for life, a peppermint foot bath and massage. awesome.

Nice nails are always something I look for. Sort of equate it to a Christmas gift, a good presentation of even a modest gift is enhanced with it's packaging. You could put a thousand dollar gift in a wal-mart bag or a ten dollar gift in a Victoria Secret type bag. Just my thought.
