I did a little trawling around when I was looking and I found it a bit disheartening to see how many of the women have had surgery to preserve their looks, so here are a couple who I think have aged gracefully (of course, I don't know for sure that they've not had work done and I guess that would be a nice thread in its own right, wouldn't it?)

I always thought Pamela Anderson was quite a gorgeous lady in her youth.
In a way, I think what we're discussing here concerns the iconic reputation of these women a lot more than their current physical hotness per se. Beauty and hotness have changed quite a lot culturally since the Monroe era, to the point where most women in the OP appear rather average to me ; I simply do not have the cultural impregnations to judge those past beauties.
Also, I think there's something fairly hypocrite in the way we grant such women an iconic status. More often than not, these women are a representation of what the overall population wants to consider hot, rather than a representation of hotness per say. A lot of times, the 'beautiful yet not too much' brunette with average body fat levels and nice eyes will be perceived as the epitome of feminine beauty, while the drop dead gorgeous blonde with voluptuous breasts and shapes that require some degree of dedication is going to be judged as a superficial bitch. Granting Salma Hayek an iconic status doesn't really create a huge level of discomfort among the population, but admitting that Pamela Anderson is hot as hell rubs quite a lot of people the wrong fucking way.
We also like to reinforce this reality by offering the former roles linked to elegance and intelligence, while the latter is doomed to fill the role of the dumb bikini babe. We then look back at it all and exclaim how superficial and idiotic this bombshell can be by 'choosing' this image, while totally forgetting that the choices are in fact made by producers according to what the population demands in the first place. Women like Pamela Anderson then orient their careers toward depravity and superficiality at the great joy of the masses (there's actually a demand for that), despite the fact that she was initially nothing more than a strikingly beautiful woman.
I've met a few extremely 'hot' women in my life, and the way they were treated by their peers was not that dissimilar to the way society treats women like Pamela Anderson. Men talked to them as if they were dumb kids, and women attacked their reputation by any means they could come up with. Again, admitting that these women could possibly have any other qualities than their shocking beauty rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.
Now, of course there's more to human value than beauty, and there's more to beauty than hotness, but to express this reality through a hypocrite culture without any substance by destroying the reputation of gorgeous women instead of relying on thoughtful dialogue is all very fucked up to me.
Sorry to say, but according to the men I've met through my life, strip clubs I've visited, the general porn culture, and my own sentiments, this random fitness model is a whole lot hotter than Mrs. Taylor. Not necessarily a superior human being, but definitely hot as fuck. As for the rest of her personality, nobody here has sufficient information to judge any of it simply with this picture.

I'd agree that she was one of the most beautiful, those violet eyes, but I never saw her as sexy. Perhaps, for me, more earthiness or raunch is needed to be really sexy. I never thought Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly were sexy, both beautiful but in a wholesome way which was part of their allure.

Sophia has definitely aged better than Taylor, and Raquel Welch better than both of them who was mentioned, although, Welch is 8 years Taylors' junior and 6 years Loren. But I bet she still looks better then they did at her age.

It's early days, but poor old Jayne Mansfield with no votes! It's interesting what suggestions are coming out from people outside the official seven. If I had have chosen a list of 100 women, someone would have found number 101.
Interesting debate on the notion of beauty and who's hot and who's not come out of this, if nothing else.
Why so few iconic hot dark-skinned women? I'm appalled and embarrassed to say I can't think of any!

When I first responded to this thread I actually read the OP question wrong. For some reason I thought she was asking who is the SEXIEST woman in the last 70 yrs. To me there is a big difference between Hot and being Sexy. Being Hot is all about appearance and being Sexy is all about attitude in my opinion.
So while I would still choose Sophia Loren with Marilyn being a close second from the choices given, I retract my comment about Raquel Welch. I Think she is far HOTTER than anyone in the poll. JMO of course!

To me Marilyn Monroe was iconic because she was the original blueprint for the coquettish blonde bombshell. She set the standard. There are reasons why she has been copied over and over again for generations - to name a few: Madonna, Anna Nicole, Pamela Anderson, Christina Aguilera, Lindsay Lohan. Her 'look' or image has been borrowed at times by celebs from Gwen Stefani, Scarlet Johanson, Paris Hilton, Angelina Jolie to even Rachel McAdams. All the women I named are beautiful but there is something iconic and unique about Marilyn's combination of glamour, sexuality, vulnerability and innocence that has made her a household name and still a glamour-icon to be emulated and borrowed from today. She's still appearing in Chanel No. 5 ads. It's crazy when you think about it. Beauty is bit easier - there are endless beautiful and/or hot women past and present, but it's kind of like looking at the Mona Lisa and trying to understand what makes the painting special.
Here's a 'modernized' Marilyn with dark hair - if this person existed today - even without the icon-factor, she would still be absolutely stunning - even by today's standards.

Susan Peters was another of the actresses from the 30s and 40s who was beautiful. Her career was tragically cut short from a gun shot wound that left her paralyzed. They tried to revive it in the 50's with a short lived daytime soap opera, but it didn't work.
Gene Tierney was another classic movie actress who often gets overlooked in the beauty department.
