I know what it means. Does that make me old?

Hands up to the cassette AND the 8-track!!

"Me, trying to explain to my kid what a jukebox was: "You know, kinda like an 800-lb. iPod.""

BTW - this was pretty similar to my first mobile phone (and it was WAY cutting edge at the time)

I know what it means!!!! Im 21 so i think im one of the last generation to remember cassettes, and cartridge games etc
ahhh but its not just about remembering the cassette...its about understanding the relationship between the pencil and the cassette...

Of course it is! Damn cassettes!

I remember using the two very often while I was growing up
The night that changed my life, a four part series of a married man lusting after his co-worker

rewinding a tape...

-Find a pen or pencil that has multiple sides (six or eight).

-Insert the pencil into one of the two holes in the cassette that would normally fit over the posts in the base unit.

-Hold the cassette in one hand while you twirl the pencil with your fingers, always turning it toward the center of the cassette. The angles of the sides should engage the sprockets and move the reel.

-Once you have a smooth motion established, change the pencil to a vertical position (straight up and down) and rotate your wrist rapidly to make the whole cassette swing round and round the pencil. Spinning the cassette is a lot faster and less tiring then twirling the pencil with your fingers.

-Return the cassette to the player and see if it will now fast-forward and rewind by the other means

I doooo, its for winding up the tape when it gets loose and/or rewinding it.
And if the pen/cil was too small you had to do it at an angle :-/ I'm getting on a bit now.

Yeah Jim...those puppies were expensive too...

On the subject of phones, here's something I bet you don't remember...phone answering machines where you stuck the phone in it and a mechanical arm lifted the receiver when a call came in...

You supplied your own reel-to-reel tape recorder...my father briefly got involved with a guy who was selling these, um, don't want to say how many years ago...but, I'd say more than forty...

You know you want it, you know you need it bad...get it now on Amazon.com...

The only act I can think which involves both a cassette tape & a pencil - is shorthand dictation.

I've never seen it performed, only depicted in some 1950's and 60's movies.

I'll be over to help you with that as soon as I finish rewinding the tape with the audio instructions...

Actually, shorthand dictation does not require a cassette normally...only if the boss dictated into one of those fancy Dictaphone machines, which came later...otherwise it's just shorthand on a stenographer's pad...

My mother was a secretary for a lot of years...I know all about carbon paper and stuff, long before the Xerox machine came out in 1960...

I'll be gawddamned, you really are older than I am. You don't look a day over 34. What's your secret, man?

Facial creams?

Clean living?

Lotsa pussy eating?

I think the worst about the pencil rewind method was if you had a kink (not that kind) in the tape or it got twisted and you didn't realise, you had to take the tape out again, untwist and wind up again. And then when your tape died because you played it to death, that was pretty nasty if you didn't copy it.
I remember the manual rewind. It also worked on videos but you needed a magic marker. And of course I still have an original mains powered casio calculator.
