Bullshit, guys can call others sluts as well.

LM come on, you know you are one.....

No doubt, plenty of male sluts. Myself especially included.

When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser. Socrates
Urban Dictionary defines a Slut as a woman with the moral of a man.

This is probably true.

I do not get the connection between a Slut and a Prostitute. I have always thought Slut had Sex because she needs Sex! While Prostitutes need the money Sex can bring a person, mostly females but not exclusively.

Many think I am a Slut and I guess it applies. But I am not a Prostitute!

If you have accepted some nice green gifts from some man/woman, does that make the person a Prostitute, if it is not their normal life style or not.

Does accepting money for sex one time or a few times make the person a Prostitute or just someone who took advantage of a situation, where romance or future relationship was out of the question?

Strange how we see this subject in such different perspectives.

Is there a difference between being a slut and being promiscuous?
If there is, where is the boundary?
If there isn't, why does "slut" sound so much worse?

I agree with a few of the other comments - they mean the same thing - I think slut is just more street whereas promiscuous is more of a formal term.

I hate when either word is used to demean or label. I think 'slut' has become more of a fun or 'dirty talk' word as society has become more progressive and open when it comes to sexuality. There are still those that might use it as an insult, but I think it says more about the person using it that way than the person they're trying to bring down.

How many people someone has sex with and how they choose to do so is really such a private/individual thing when you think about it. Yet there are these shameful stereotypes - from the frigid virgin to the boring/missionary marriage typecast to the slut stereotype. You're either doing it too too much or not enough. Sometimes it feels like nobody can win.

Words usually have more than one meaning and the same word can be used in multiple ways. Slut is one of those words. I don't know if I agree that 'slut' has become more of a fun word. Usually when I hear someone say 'slut', it's being flung as an insult. Even on tv and in movies, it's usually coming from a woman about another woman and there's nothing fun or playful about it. It's meant as an insult. I can talk to a couple buddies of mine and we can joke around and call each other 'dickhead' or 'asshole', and it's funny. But if some random person in the grocery story called me a dickhead, it would be an insult. It's all about context.

Let's take a man/woman couple for example. One night they have a wild night of sex and they both know what turns the other on. During the session the guy is taking control and fucking her nice and hard and says something like, "that's my sweet little cum slut. you gonna swallow my cum like the good little slut that you are?" That dirty talk is fun and it will amplify their pleasure together. Slut is perfectly normal word in this scenario.

Take the same couple and put them in a bar or night club one night. While the guy is away getting drinks, another guy comes over to hit on the girl. After she rebuffs his numerous attempts, the boyfriend returns just in time to hear the intruder call the woman a 'slut'. Chances are that the couple aren't going to feel very fun or playful of his use of the word.

I'm not saying I agree, but normally when I hear the word 'slut' it's meant in the most hurtful way possible.

Having said all that, like Dude said.. i'm totally a slut.

Slut just sounds so much more intriguing, sexier, juicier, hotter, more fun, tempting, provocative, wilder, wetter, and erotic! Slut!
No idea what i did to get this spot.... sorry

By virtue of the fact that it's accepted (by many) as part of dirty talk, or can be used in a playful way by friends, there's a dual nature to the word now that probably didn't exist in the same way several decades before (like in the '50s maybe), when it was probably always seen as a negative word. I never said it was exclusively a fun word - just that as society becomes more sexually open - those words evolve as well (like 'bitch').

In my circles, I tend to see it used more playfully than hurtfully - but that probably also differs depending on different ages and demographics. A generation or two back, I think women were judged more harshly for their sexual choices, so it became a popular way to judge and put someone down. Unfortunately some still do that, but the word isn't exclusively negative - especially with younger generations. This is definitely a good thing. smile
the word slut is what you make it - to me, it's a fun word. it's dirty, it's sexy, and it gets tossed around in the bedroom - we don't ascribe a demeaning tone to it and so it's not demeaning. smile

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Slut! I love that word sounds so hot
I love to be called Slut when someone is fucking me!!
idk I have no problem being called a slut. I like it actually.

Quite right! As I said on another thread, EVERY WORD has a connotation to it. Many women ENJOY :being talked dirty too" and being called things like slut or whore as it turns them on. All too often, women have a difficult time in relating to someone they love the things that DO turn them on for fear of being perceived as a pervert and the consequent disapproval and possibly rejection. More often than not, that fear is needless.

? Pardon! Am I missing the meaning or did you post this in the wrong thread?

This is a site devoted to imaginary sexuality which can involve multiple sex - same gender sex - whatever - where expressions are graphic etc therefore I feel it is somewhat contradictory to use any of these terms with regard to outraged morality.

Outraged morality? I think you've misunderstood the op, the two terms seem to me to mean the same thing. People tend to think slut is much more deragtory but why?
On Lush there's a status option of slut not promiscuous, so a certain amount of humour is expected as well as more serious posts.

I'm sorry you still didn't get my meaning. To discuss whether or not slut or slag is derogatory on this particular site to me is a joke in itself. Though an interesting side issue is there is no established male expression for someone who is promiscuous although I have heard a modern young woman call a male a slag. (but with her tongue in her cheek as it is still usually only used for females.)

When my wife and I got married our best friends flew to the wedding. A freak snowstorm hit and half the rooms lost power. So we spent our first night as husband and wife sharing our room with our two best friends, hers and mine.

We were relaxing and enjoying eachothers company when I asked her friend a question

What do you think of a woman who likes more than one guy at a time?

Her reply.... If she is open about it with her husband either then or later (if not married she owns up to it later) then she is promiscuous. If she is not willing to let her husband know about it, then she is a slut.

Don't know if that is the real definition, but it set things straight for the four of us lol

I've heard both words, and they both generally have negative connotations to them. But at the same time, there are those who are proud to call themselves either one. It has less to do with what others think of you when using these terms and more to do with how you feel about yourself when using these terms. Either can be empowering for anyone.

As far as a difference goes, there isn't much of one...other than the fact that promiscuous is an adjective while slut is a noun. Calling someone promiscuous is describing someone's behavior while calling them a slut is using their behavior to define who they are.

For example: You do promiscuous/slutty things, therefore you're a slut.

As I said, it's all about the individuals and how they feel about themselves in regards to these terms.

Both words are for people who chose to be judgemental... If they are judging their friends, she is promiscuous... If they are judging someone they dont like or an "enemy", she is a slut...

Just one mans opinion... smile
For some reason the first thing that popped in my head is....

Promiscuous is to Slut... as ... STI is to STD

Both are fine, as long as it's safe. I don't see the difference between the two, other than who might be the one labeling he/she. It's a matter of opinion from someone who has no right to have an opinion in the first place...

To me, many women would aspire to reach the lofty status of a 'true slut'. Yet, so few really do attain that lofty status. I would love to be thought of and recognized as a 'true slut.' Having done so would mean that I have attained a status that indeed represents that of a woman who, in a multitude of ways, knows how to and does, bring both joy and satisfaction to her various partners at all times.
I tihink of myself as being promiscuous, but people do call me a slut
it's interesting how words can lose their stigma. although slut wasn't used in my social circles as a teen and young adult, hoe was. being proclaimed a hoe was the worst. nowadays, hoe doesn't have the sting it once had, is used regardless of gender and rarely has anything to do with number of sexual partners.

in my opinion, promiscuous sounds dainty and is met with a bit of intrigue.

Say. Her. Name.

I just turned 60 and It's always amused me how men more often than not try to hook up with as many women they consider to be "sluts" yet end up marrying someone who is considered a "good girl". I myself, with one exception, have always dated, lived with and married fun, naughty, promiscuous, open minded women. AKA sluts. I've had an incredibly fun life in every aspect and wouldn't change a thing if I had the chance. Guys my advice is to date, move in with and in the end up married to a naughty/slutty woman as long as you are aware you won't be the only guy in her life. But the odds of your being the only guy in the good girl you married life is about the same.
I heard my brother in law was a slut back in the late 80s to mid 90s. I would never had guessed it but heard the stories.
My ex describes me as a slut, I just think I'm promiscuous
I think the members have already defined who and what we are. But does it really matter?
I think this is actually a much more interesting question than it at first seems.

I don't think anyone would disagree that the standards are different for men and women. Where a guy might be considered promiscuous, a woman doing exactly the same would quickly be considered a "slut".

Then, as other posters have mentioned, you get into the kinky name-calling aspect of it - but I'm going to ignore that side of things.

For me, I think the difference is actually quite important and comes down to intent. Both men and women are totally free to want to fuck as many people as they want. The more they do actually fuck then the more promiscuous they become and can be considered.

Where I differentiate between promiscuous and slut (either male or female), is those that are driven through previous life experience to seek personal validation through sex. If your only sense of self-worth is achieved by fucking a different person every night and choosing not to ever get close to somebody then that makes you a slut.

Not that being a slut is necessarily a bad thing. But for me, that is the difference between the two. A promiscuous person seeks out multiple sexual encounters for fun and experimentation. A slut is driven to have sex with as many people as possible as a means to make themselves feel better and to validate their lives.
