I still have no clue what you all are talking about. LOL. Geordi from Star Trek TNG is hot, though.

I just love these two...
I did indeed! But I had the whole star trek thought the first time he called himself a Geordie! He is my long distance heart!

I took it as a personal challenge, and I worked hard at that. I like listening to my friend talk, especially when he really gets going. I guess it's the same with me, I have a slight southern accent that gets stronger at certain times or if I'm talking to certain people.
When I want a challenge I watch Hebburn, though my wife's accent is pretty close. She's from less than an hour away.
My wife still has problems sometimes knowing what some people here in Georgia are saying.

I can only imagine she does at times. My husband is only from up north and I still get the, "What was that?"

I love different accents and learning new slang.

I have a new story out! Wish You Were Here A teasing sub may I have pushed too far, but the punishment is oh so sweet.

If you haven't already, please check out my story with leftlingula. A husband and wife rediscovered each other and It all started with one simple word...

From my understanding, the most plausible theory is that it comes from a derogatory slang given to the people of Newcastle by the Scottish Jacobites in the 1745 Rebellion. The supporters of King George (Geordie) II in Newcastle stood up against them, and earned themselves the name Geordies. The term Geordie is used for natives of Newcastle only, and they are very proud of it. There is a ton of amazing history stories related to that area.

Then again, it could be because of George (Geordie) Stephenson. He was a mining and railway engineer who came from the north east.

Sorry, I'm a history nerd.

The first recorded use of the word was in the 1780's. Twa Dogs by Robbie Burns, as a Scottish diminutive of George.
Sailors during the 19th century referred to boats and seamen from Newcastle as Geordies And those from Sunderland as Jammies. A pretty clear indication of the Jacobite explanation, imho.

I thought Sunderland was Mackems?

i just checked with my Geordie and he said, "Yes ma'am you are right about that."

Only from the war. It's a Geordie term and mainly used in football parlance.
Geordie is a term used by the whole of the UK. If you don't follow football or come from the Northeast you probably have never heard of the term.

Nothin' like a Brownie.
I'm not exactly in stings league, but yeah, us Geordies rule the roost!!
I think it's so cool that guys from a certain city/area in the UK have a catchy name, like "Geordie Lad". So much better than "dude from Newcastle." We have names for people from certain places here in the US, but typically they aren't very nice. sad

So True! Here in NY, we call people from Massachusetts MassHoles! Geordie sounds so much nicer, LOL

No offense intended to any one here from Massachusetts, I know you all have names for us "classy" New Yorkers too, HAHA.
Wi aye man, ah luves the Geordie accent me like, yoos na!
I have fallen for a lad who is in Newcastle on business, does that count?

I've never fallen for a Geordie lad though, no.
