I have a fear of writing about a handicapped person.
I believe I would have to have a greater understanding of their handicap and how they view it. It is all to easy to imagine some handicap, but it is difficult to be able to present it in a sensitive and intelligent manner. I am still considering several stories that deal with handicaps and continue to do research on it, perhaps I will have to start with a poem to wade in those waters slowly.
PennLady is doing a marvelous job with her "Pretending" series which deals with a similar situation and I would love to hear from her.
What do others think?
Having had a parent who spent a year bedridden with polio when I was in third grade, and having spent twenty years with a woman who got polio when she was eleven (the year the Saulk vaccine came out) I would not have a problem writing about handicaps. I would never write about the usual taboos already mentioned (parent/child , , beastiality, etc.) but I would add to that list, interracial relationships. I wouldn't refuse to writ about them because they bother me, (they do not) but because it bothers me that anyone thinks skin color is or should be important.

I'm writing a biography of my father, who, though he died a pauper, lived a life rich in adventure, love, laughter, tragedy and song. He was, for two years in his early teens, a victim of the Christian Brothers Boys Town abuse debacle. I have alluded to what he suffered there, but despite many attempts at actually depicting it, I finally decided that it was only possible for me to have the abuse happen off the page and look at what the effects of it on him were.
My father was a very private man. It seemed to me that as I was writing the scenes of abuse, no matter how hard I tried to make it not something for voyeurs to relish in, all I could hear was his voice saying to me "No kid...please. They don't need to hear that."
So I didn't put it in.
“No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.”

There are girls I have dated, loved in the past. Some of them already got married, have their own happy family, or still there looking for the right one. And there are some relations happened not at the right time with right person. Though we took different paths, and love had faded, I would never hurt them, or jerpodize their curruent relationship, including writing them down in a story.
for sure. I'm not to imaginative so I only really write about what I know/have done. doesn't really do a thing for me anyway.
Non-Perturbative Canonical Gravity. Although now that I've promised not to, it's all I want to write about. Now I have to find out what it is.

@CoopsRuthie that sounds like something very interesting. Please tell us all about it when you're done.
