Why do you vote on a story?

Just another thought that came to mind. I think it would be unfair to score a story low just because you don't like the subject matter. For example, I'm not much into BDSM, so if I read a story like that and didn't enjoy it, it would be silly of me to score low and say "I'm not into BDSM", or worse still, to score it low because I just didn't get it!

I only score stories that I really liked because I don't know why, but I don't like giving out scores that are lower than 4

I am not a writer but I am a reader. I been reading Lush stories for about 18 months. On a few occasions I tried to comment on the stories which I only could do if I joined. So here I am, reading and commenting.
I do score but I don't really see why it is necessary. Every reader has a different perspective, a different 'take' on a story. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" seems appropriate. That being the case any scoring system will be haphazard and unreliable.

I'm new here and haven't done much voting but my rating system remains the same as in other places....

If I don't make it to the end, or the story just really, really isn't for me at all. No vote.

Otherwise...

If it's both well written and engages my interest in story line, or if the story line itself isn't my thing but yet, it's still good and well written ect, then by all means vote it up to a Five.
If writing isn't 100% but story is still brilliant , or if there are very small areas that need improvement, such as a sudden shift in direction that needs just one or two lines added before, or other such things, give it a four.
If the writing needs improvement and the story is not that great, yet it was a good effort, go for a three.

And never give out a two or a one here, as anything of such terrible writing or grammar to get a one or two, wouldn't have made it onto lush.

I'm to the point where I usually just give comments without scoring. Quantifying literature just seems pointless.

I almost always give 5s, or don't score at all. If a scene or a sentence or sometimes even a particularly good word choice jumps out at me, either because it is well written or simply very hot, I will mentioned what I liked in the comments and score it.

When a story impacts me I like to let the writer know it

Because I am here to interact with other authors. If they spent the time writing a story, and I spent time reading it, then I think they would appreciate the feedback. I know I do.

I vote because the story made me hot and I loved or envied the act that went on in the story.

I vote on a story to let the author know that their work is appreciated. Sometimes, I really enjoy a story and feel the need to comment.

I thought it was required. D'oh! Lol.

To show appreciation and hopefully to encourage the writers.

I like to be rated good, bad, or indifferent. I'm not competing with other authors. If the story effected you, I like to hear it. On the other hand, I like to give good reviews and scores. If a story moves me in some even small way, I want to comment on it.

I have written for publications where one writes day after day and I heard no comment. I presumed the circulation sales was the feedback I wanted. However, direct feedback is so refreshing. I hope the writers whom I rate and comment on, feel the same way.

I have read many authors, but love a few on their style, but I have noticed that many just want to get 5s, and not a 4 .... they tend to block you for a 4 even with a review on it as to why... as a writer, I want to know what people think and have writen to those that score me low... specially if it is another fellow writer... I want to improve on my writing. I really do, so I rather know why they did it...

Now there are those pesky trolls that just go around opening new accounts and come in and drop a 1 or 2 out of spite... to get someone back for petty drama... I think even those would be ok.... but not a reflection of whom I am... I would prefer their votes disappear when their accounts did as well just as a comment would... or perhaps make the comments permanent... just like the ones here on the forums.... left as lurker....

last but not least... I vote to encourage my friends as much as Ican
