I wrote an erotic horror story and posted it here on Lush in the Horror category. It couldn't possibly go anywhere else. My ego tells me it is by far and away the best story I've ever written, by a long shot. It gets approved and Holy shit, Batman! ... it makes the Recommended Read List. Yay! I'm thrilled! Then ... hardly anybody reads it. In three days 300 people click on it while an old story I wrote that I think is almost a throwaway gets approved a day later and wracks up 2400 reads. 8 times as many in less time! Ugh!

So, tell me, do people not like the mix of erotica and horror? Is it like oil and water? I did put a lot of what I think is pretty good sex in the story, but do people only see that it is horror and go the other way?

Dumb horror turns me off (Friday the 13th, Halloween) but good horror (The Exorcist, The Cask of Amontillado) lights me up. I tried to make my story fit the mold of the second type. So, if my posting here has generated some interest on your part, please read 'The Lighter and the Scissors' and let me know what you think. (Wow, maybe I can pick up 20 more reads from this!). Be advised it is a horror story that is meant to horrify and there is a scene that is made to shock. But, in the end, everything turns out kinda A' Ok. Thanks!

I do believe that the "Horror" category is one of the lower-read genres on Lush, and I'm sure there are as many reasons for that as there are members not reading. Another thing that hurts readership is very long stories, and yours, at almost 10,000 words, is fighting that battle as well. I write long stories too and have run up against that hurdle a number of times, but being here for years and developing a steady following has eased that battle somewhat, As far as a story you're proud of and worked extra-hard on getting less attention that something you were less certain about, I feel your pain. I think most of us can relate to that.

The truth remains, though, that it's an investment of time that people have to commit to in order to read longer stories, especially when there are plenty out there of less than 5,000 words. A lot of folks come down on the side of either not having or not being willing to commit the time, especially if they don't know you at all. Somewhere around 3,000 - 3,500 words seems to be the sweet spot, but I never hit it.

Anyhow, that's my take on it. I took the liberty of adding the link to your story into your post - I hope it helps!

There are 'hot' categories and then there's all the rest ticking downward. It's all relative, as Stormdog notes. I've written more than 100 Micros and I would be stunned if any one of them got 300 reads in 3 days. Only a couple have reached 1,000 total in the last year, but that's the nature of the beast I have chosen to lie with.

Sadly, "horror" is one of those categories that just doesn't get the hits, no matter how well-written the stories. My only story in that category ("Lesbian Vampire Lust" - I tried to make the title as appealing as possible!) has only had 2951 hits in just under two years. But I'm really pleased with the way it turned out, so I don't regret writing it for a moment. Similarly, my stories in the "Steampunk" and "Supernatural" categories have had very few hits, but are among my favourite of my own pieces.

My own (possibly controversial) view is that the "Recommended Read" badge doesn't necessarily have a great deal of effect on the number of reads a story gets. None of my most-read stories got the accolade, and it doesn't seem to have held them back.

I will read your story though.

22 February 2024 - How about a quick plug for one of my filthiest recent stories? It's all in the title - Naked Pool Party Swingers | Lush Stories Please read, comment and maybe give it a ❤️ - or even a⭐ if you really enjoy it! Thank you! Annie xxx

Here's a horror story (technically in the "monster sex" category) that went famous, and won a comp.

In general, I agree with Stormdog: long stories don't get much traction. nor does horror generally. But find your audience - comment on other writers doing horror (some REALLY good horror/erotica writers here), pimp your work a little (this post helps!), folks will read you, especially with the RR.

I've got your story all queued up!

Thank you all for your sobering analyses. My life would be infinitely better if I would stay away from the news and politics. The situation in North Korea may be god awful and I may regard a certain person as the worst human in American history but my getting anxious or upset about the problems does nothing except bring me down. Likewise, I should write because I like to write and post without being concerned with number of reads and silly scores that ultimately mean zero. But I always want my ego petted. I gotta become a better Buddhist. Please, somebody tell me that's a great idea!

As others have said, is relative. The story I'm most proud of is also a long horror (four chapters with only one under 7000 words) - the first chapter was posted in October last year and is just now approaching 2k views, and that's with not only an RR but an EP and series award. A frivolous story in another category that is a fraction of the length and has the word "Schoolgirls" in the title that I posted only a few months before as more views than all four chapters combined at over 10k.

But I regret nothing - my writing improved so much just from the effort I put in to writing that story, and I have made several very dear friends as a result of comments and messages connected with it. The latter are far more important to me than views. Although perhaps my expectations were lower - I assumed a horror full of gay sex, black metal and Nazis would get even less interest than it did.

I like to think you get a higher proportion of engaged readers in the less read categories. Most people are here for a quick wank, and are not going to a long horror story for it. However, the few who are here for a great horror story will likely appreciate your story all the more, follow you into other categories and tell their friends about your writing. I did exactly that with yours.

Punked competition entry: Punk’s Undead

A very naughty Catholic schoolgirl: Emma (Part 1) (RR) | (Part 2)

Horror: Women Of Dark Desires(RR), Doll Parts (EP), Lo! Baphomet! A Queer Erotic Horror (OS)

A cheeky little micro: Go Fuck Yourself!

This was a fantastic story. I love when there is more to keep me vested other than sex sex sex (although I've got my guilty pleasures I love to read too - I will say some of the filth on this site is fucking art).

Star Bellied is the one who messaged me about your story and when he has a rec, I know I have to read it, considering our similar taste in, um, food. Honestly, great job. If you keep spamming it and dropping it with a link around Lush, you will slowly rack up views, just not the 10k views, but you'll probably end up with a following of active commenters and possibly a few friends with shared interests which is better than anonymous click and faps in my opinion.

I've not written in horror yet but have tried in some of the lesser-visited categories such as SciFi and Fantasy, Supernatural, and Monster sex. Despite how good I think the stories are, none of them received anything close to the number of views and votes as other categories, nor as high as stories that contained the tag 'anal'! Might just be because I'm an average storyteller. Or that the majority of people are here for the instant gratification rather then the cerebral long haul.

The number of views and votes doesn't detract from my enjoyment bringing the stories to life, and those readers that took the plunge and commented seemed to appreciate the effort.

Please browse my digital bookshelf. In this collection, you can find 109 full stories, 10 micro-stories, and 2 poems with the following features:

* 29 Editor's Picks, 72 Recommended Reads.
* 15 competition podium places, 9 other times in the top ten.
* 21 collaborations.
* A whole heap of often filthy, tense, hot sex.

Ok, well, my ego is now satisfied! I am listed as the highest-rated author in the Horror category in the last 30 days! I am basking in the sunshine of glory! And I will smack the first person who points out that The Lighter and the Scissors is the only horror story submitted in the past six weeks.
