How effective is story spamming to friends?

I don't follow anyone, so I do appreciate some spamming, because otherwise I'd miss quite a few good stories.

I think of following as...well, it's weird, I have people following me who've never talked with me or otherwise interacted with me. I don't know if this is true of other authors, but in all honesty, it kind of creeps me out.

Side note: Milik, FFS, get those ribbons back up!!

Following an author is about liking their writing not them... That is what your friend list is for. It's like watching a TV show because you actually like it, not because the creator is a swell guy. I don't even like sprite but I follow her. I've never interacted with 95% of the people who follow me either but I am still honored that they do follow me.

he lies - he worships the ground i walk on. he even has a shrine in his bedroom dedicated to me.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Sorry to inform you, but most of those following you... Homeland Security and the FBI.

I spam. In fact I spam and like it. I like it very much. I love it! I can't wait to spam again.

I think it's perfectly ok for authors to intimate their friends that they've got a story published. After all they're friends! Feelings of begging or imposing etc as mentioned by some, are psychological issues I guess on part of the later...
I like the way you make me feel even when I'm nowhere near...

This has been a very interesting thread, and while I’ve never kept an exact count, I’d say that most people don’t mind getting spam from their friends. You can count me in that group also, though I’d never do as some say they do, and that is to delete the letter without opening it. To those that do that, how do you know whether the writer had also talked about something else in the letter? Perhaps even sent you a compliment about a recent story of yours they had read.

Lately, I’ve been trying to promote a submission that Fire_Ice, a very good friend of mine wrote. I was not involved in its creation, though she was gracious enough to send me a preview of the original version. I offered a couple of comments about it, and other than encouraging her to submit her first piece of writing, that has been my only contribution. We had our first ‘argument’ about whether or not I should be listed as co-author. It took some doing, but I finally managed to convince her that since it was her inspiration and creative genius, she alone should receive all accolades it earned. So far, it has done very well too. That is probably the only ‘argument’ that I’ll ever win with her. smile

Lately, I’ve been thinking about sending out a notice to all my friends, asking them if they have a few minutes to spare someday, they read and hopefully offer some kind comments of encouragement to her. What I’ve considered sending out, would be similar to, if not the same as, my Forum signature. My question to all of you, especially those of you that don’t care to receive such notices, since this isn’t my creation, would you consider this spam? How would you feel if you received my letter?

I’ll be interested in any comments you may offer. Thank you.
If you're feeling bored during this Covid-19 epidemic I’d like to suggest
you take a peek at a story I collaborated with SueBrasil, a brilliant author.
It's about a mistake in judgment a lady makes concerning a friend, based
on the hurtful words of someone that only thinks of himself. Will that
conniving person succeed in ruining a beautiful friendship, or will she see
through his lies? It's gradually creeping up towards the 30,000 mark
and we’d love any votes or hearing whatever comments you may wish
to make. It is listed in my profile under ‘FAVOURITES’ as Apologize.

I haven't been on here for very long, so I haven't tried it. I don't know how my views per story rate with other's, probably pretty low, but the pieces I have submitted so far are pretty vanilla, so I get that they wouldn't be very popular. That said, it's better than the views I am getting anywhere else, and hopefully, the quality of my writing will bring in more readers. Especially since I am working towards publishing my kinkier stuff now.
I don't spam. And, I shut off the function that lets people include me in a message that goes out to all of their friends.

What can I say? I'm shy.

Well in my particular case, it's about useless. Since I already follow all my friends having them spam me is just duplication and a lot of times I have already read the story by the time the canned meat shows up on my door! I am usually pretty good at reading my friends stories and don't often miss one!

I think it odd that there is a stigma about advertising your writing on a writing site.

Writing is the only reason I’m here and I’m pretty sure everyone on my friends list knows that. A courtesy note that I’ve published something new shouldn’t be something one has to defend. I’ll not feel bad for doing so.

It's not.

If friends and followers want to read, they will. If not, they won't.

I've discontinued that practice because it yield's infinitesimal results.

It's a story site. Promoting one's work certainly isn't against the rules. If a member sends a story link and announcement to their friends, so what?

Nicola designed the option to send a message to all your friends into the site's coding a long time ago. It's often used by many people to promote their stories or to send some greeting or announcement.

Deleting any unwanted message is just a simple click. Why would anyone be so lazy that they get their nose out of joint/panties in a wad over that?

If you don't want those messages, simply use your settings to click the box to not receive them.

If I write a story or poem that I feel is good enough to post on Lushstories, I am proud of the work and want as many people to read it as possible. I will and do send out a story announcement to all my friends. To me, having my work read by many is a major goal. If you don't want a lot of people to read your work, handle that however you wish.

Without a scientific survey I have no idea how effective it is. But as of this posting I have 51 Famous stories and 6 Legendary stories. I have written 81 stories and poems, if you eliminate the 22 poems, that is 59 stories with 51 making it to Famous (30,000+ views) and Legendary (100,000+ views). I have well over 3 million story/poem views. I've always used the 'To All My Friends' messaging to announce a new story. So I doubt that it hurts to send it out.

I do not mind receiving mass story announcements. If it's from someone on my friends list, it is NOT spam!

As a reader I actually appreciate a PM to inform me of a story one has written. I find it nice to read a few lines to determine if I want to read it or not. I do however find it kinda annoying to see multiple spams for the same story by the same author.
Internet Philosopher
I don’t use the reading que much at all. I collect emails from those I choose to follow and keep spams from writers whose stories appeal to me. Without those emails I’d likely miss stories I want to read.

I’m actually reviewing my follow list to cut it down so those spams become even more important

I don’t spam. I don’t think anyone would read what I posted either way. My last story only had two votes. If I want something read I post it on literotica.

I'm confused. I only post here so my stories get read. Why would you post if you think no-one's reading you?

I hope people will read what I post. I have no expectation being read on this site. Compared to fetlife, literotica, smashwords and Amazon the audience here is very small. I think if you come to this site with high expectations of people interested in reading your work you’re going to be disappointed. All I am saying to the original poster is if your goal is to be read by a large audience this might not be the site for that. If you’re like me and you post your writing on you’re personal website, fetlife, literotica, smashwords and Amazon, what’s one more site even if it only gets a few thousand views?

The truth is, if I don’t post here Trinket will think I’m dead.

I spam, but I don't think it works. People have writers they follow. I do like to see comments from those that are sincere. Numbers and badges don't mean much to me, because I doubt that they will be chiseled on my stone.

That’s one way to look at it. Another way to look at it might be you’re only getting 11,000 views per writing. I also make no judgments on the quality of the audience here. I am merely stating that the membership and traffic to this site is lower than the other sites I post on.

I write just for fun. I enjoy the views. I have a good audience on Lush. Some things don't get a lot of views. I just write about things I like.

I also put my work all over the internet.

It's just fun. We're all amateurs.

I was answering a question asked of me. I’m not sure why you’re getting so defensive. Sorry if you took what I said as an attack on your work.

Not sure that’s true. Many people who post on this site also sell their work on Amazon and Smashowrds.
