ok, I've been a massive Dr Who fan since the curly hair and jelly babies, and for those of you don't know who I'm talking about, TOM BAKER, the 4th Doctor.

any who, who is all tuning in on the 23rd at 7:50/ or even heading to watch it on the big screen at the picture's... I know I am.

and do you think it was what you expected?
Tom Baker, I've seen him, is he the one with the jelly babies and the scarf?

Virgin have put lots of old Dr Whos on catchup and I was watching one the other day with this old guy with white hair and a hot girl called Jo. She had a camel toe in most scenes, but she's really pretty.

I couldn't believe how bad the special effects were, I think it was the 1970s. It was like everything was made of cardboard and the monsters were funny. The acting was very amateurish too.

The Daleks were on it though and they were brilliant!!! I actually want a Dalek!

I'm in the US, and we get all our Dr. Who on Netflix like a year later. Best doctor: David Tennant. Best companion(s): Amy, Rory, River Song (yum!).

That would be Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor and my favorite. Jo Grant, played by Katy Manning, was his companion for much of his run and was one of my teenaged crushes (forget the cameltoe, feast your eyes on those breasts). The Daleks pretty much defined the show (they first appeared in the second storyline and have been part of the show ever since) and are one of my two favorite Dr. Who enemies (the other is The Master, a renegade from the same civilization as The Doctor).

I've been a Who fan almost since it came to North America. We were almost a decade behind the Brits when PBS first brought it over but now are pretty much in sync with them since the new series began in 2005.

Yes, the fx were crappy but the acting actually could be good at time (most of the Doctors were accomplished actors before taking the part) and there were some great stories, esp. once you get into the seventies when Tom Baker played The Doctor.

New Who looks better and has a different vibe; much more focus on character than in the old series for one thing. Still love it, though, and now that Netflix Canada finally has it, I'm watching it through in sequence.

Alas, I don't have the channel that's carrying the 50th anniversary show here in Canada so I'll have to see it later.
David Tennant for me was the best Doctor.

I cannot wait for Saturday night. I am hoping that Christopher Eccleston will make a surprise appearance. I am very excited.
I think my first one was with the girl with the thick lips. The Dr was ugly, can't remember the actor's name.

My favourite Dr was Matt Smith. I think it's going to be weird now, because there was chemistry between him and Oswin. Now that will go, unless they make the new one some kind of pervy old man

I've been very disappointed by Oswin and the Doctor. After the brilliance of David Tennant and the Amy & Rory story, Oswin has fallen flat for me and I've found that Oswin has made the Doctor too schmaltzy, personally.

I hope the new Doctor will bring back a more eccentric, fatherly characterisation.
I remember watching the first episode in 1963 from behind the sofa, William Hartnell played the first Dr he was a bit frightening.

1963?! lol I didn't realize it had been going that long.

I loved Tom Baker as the Doctor. David Tennant was very enjoyable too. There was a one-off with Paul McGann playing the Doctor - it was excellent and I urge you to check it out:

Eighth Doctor Who

I never liked Matt Smith much at all, found him too smarmy...

I'm VERY excited about Peter Capaldi playing the next Doctor - another Scot!! smile

I've always enjoyed the debate that rages before a new doctor is announced and love guessing who the next might be...

Some of my favourite suggestions for the next Timelord have been: Richard E Grant, Eddie Izzard and for a female doctor (and that idea has been bandied about in the past) Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders or Victoria Wood...

I'm looking forward to Saturday's big episode - I hope we get some nice cameos and nods to doctors gone by...

Well, it was actually cancelled in 1989 and then revived in 2005 so it hasn't been continuous. However, in the years when it wasn't on TV, there was an American TV movie (which wasn't very good and did a couple things that p-d off DW fans, though The Doctor that appeared in it is regarded as "official") and several series of novels and audio dramas, often featuring voices of TV cast members.

Of all our inventions for mass communication,
pictures still speak the most universally understood language.

Walt Disney
Paul McGann, I don't class him as an official, but I do; Peter Cushing even though he wasn't a time lord, just a human with a Blue Box. yes the show ran for a long and stopped, till Eccalstion came along. when we heard that was happening we were excited, and that is how I introduced the programme to my oldest, they even know some off the original Who's.

DanielleX, I think your may be thinking of Rose Tyler (Billy Piper, she had a number one hit, before being married to Chris Evens and her acting career), she was the assistant to both Eccalstion and Tennant.

Mazza, love Peter Capaldie in the Thick of it, cannie wait to see how he plays as the Dr, also. but gutted he wasn't ginger, he's always wanted to be a GINGER...

I got hooked on the third Doctor - Jon Pertwee - lost a bit of interest with Colin Baker and did not like McCoy at all - the McGann movie was alright if a bit too much

The Cushing movies were re-do's of Hartnell story arcs

When it started back up in '05, I got hooked again - Eccleston was good, Tennant the best of all, never got to like Smith

Companions - Mary Jane Smith still ranks as the best one to me, with Rose Tyler being a close second - the episode they both appeared in is still my favorite overall - Amy and Rory I was not sorry to see go, though I did like River/Melody

I just hope BBC-America simulcasts with BBC-1
What I really, really want is for River Song and Captain Jack Harkness to meet. My goodness, can you imagine the sparks that would fly?

Between them, they share all the best dirty lines in "Doctor Who". Her “Oh, that’s magnificent! I’m going to wear LOTS of jodhpurs!" (in "Let's Kill Hitler") is the best line ever.

07 February 2025 - My latest dirty story is now online. Free Spirit on the Nudist Beach - Part 2 | Lush Stories Please read, comment and maybe give it a ❤️ - or even a⭐ if you really enjoy it! Thank you! Annie xxx

I can admit this, I have watched the entire omnibus of Dr Who, well all episodes still available as the BBC lost a number. I enjoy the old series for the storylines as much as the new ones. They have all been written by great writers.

Tom Baker played the Dr really well, but have also enjoyed the reinterpretations of the new ones, especially Tennats.

I'm watching the special Sunday morning here in Australia as it is playing in sync with the Uk.

And please for those missing out, I promise "No spoilers" ;)

in all the times I've brought up the Cushing movies, not once has anyone said those where Hartnell arcs

learned something new on that fact!

Wiki is your friend, and the Dr Who site confirms this

"The character, portrayed by the actor Peter Cushing, appeared in two films made by AARU Productions: Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965), which was based on the televised serial The Daleks (1963), and Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. (1966), based on The Dalek Invasion of Earth (1964)"

I remembered the Hartnell arcs when I saw the Cushing movies, then came the Internet and I found out I was correct - and won a bet with a friend over that

your friend must have been very gutted
remind me, to never make a bet with you
I actually liked Cushing as The Doctor, but they kind of nerfed him by removing the alien aspect of his character. Did enjoy both movies though (but I've also seen the original Hartnell stories and like them better).
I have become obsessed with Dr. Who recently. I'm American, with no chance of seeing the special when it airs, but I have a brilliant and wonderful Lush friend in the UK who has promised to hook me up.

The US is getting it on BBC America if you know someone who has it and can record it for you. Here in the Great White North, it's on Space, our homegrown equivalent to SyFy.

I don't have BBC America, though I used to. I'm not a big tv watcher these days, but it's one of the few channels I do miss.Ur716bv4P9SKwvvX

Paul is official alright, but some elements of the movie are not (e.g. the bit about him being half-human has been conveniently and mercifully forgotten). If any doubted his status, there is a short prologue to the 50th anniversary on BBC's website written by current series writer Stephen Moffat that stars McGann as the Eighth Doctor.

i can not wait for the special...we have a BBC package we buy but i have to stay up crazy hours for some shows! but the TENTH dr. is my fav. when i was recently at convention a guy came with a crazy dalek he made completely....amazing! *if you have me on fb there are pics on there*

cant wait...nosebleed and sighs!

ok, three of them are just no no's.

coogan may look the part, but won't be able to portray as the doctor!

cabbagepatch (cumberbatch), if he received the part, I would stop watching; was a crappy holmes also

Radcliffe, to much of a child actor, to play the part; yet to see how he acts 'in the woman in black'

depp, would be like BAKER

fry, possibly play just like a professor at Uni

Coogan- you are under-rating his talent as an actor. He could easily play the Doctor. He is exceptionally versatile and he would bring something new, as each actor before has done.

Cumberbatch was a crappy Holmes? That is ludicrous. I would like to hear your reasoning for his Holmes being rubbish. He would be a brilliant Doctor, somewhere between Colin Baker and David Tennant.

Radcliffe you are judging solely on his age and Harry Potter. The HP character was very restrictive and didn't allow him to show his real attributes. In The Woman In Black and the Sky TV show about a Doctor he was excellent. The youthful exuberance of Matt Smith, the hurt and damage of Christopher Eccleston and the naivety of Peter Davidson.

Depp would be unexpectedly new. He is he best character actor in the world at the moment and would bring a level of eccentricity, self-loathing and care that would set him on his own.

Fry would be a hark back to the first few Doctors. He would be kind, hilarious and slightly condecending, as you alluded to.
I used to love Depp but have come to avoid him. He's simply been slumming in this twitchy, eccentric character mode for a while. That said, if an American is going to play The Doctor, he'd be a good one to go with if he can get back on his game.

Radcliffe could work, but I wonder about Rupert Grint (Ron). He might actually make a better Doctor than Daniel.

Fry is a given and, were we talking pre-House, probably his old buddy Hugh Laurie would be a candidate, too.

After watching the first two Sherlock episodes, I already had Cumberbatch pegged as Doctor material. He and his Holmes castmate Martin Freeman may be getting too big for the Who budget now, though given their growing careers in the movies.

My problem is that I don't watch enough British TV these days and that's where the next Who, like most of them, will come from. Almost all of the new Who actors were largely unknowns to me until they started on the show, even though all four (counting Capaldi) had pretty good resumes going in. I suspect that the next Doctor after Capaldi will be the same - someone with a strong resume on British TV but maybe not so well-known over here.
Coogan is not an actor, he is a hack, I have even seen him on stand up, and your humour must be dry... like his routine and "acting"

Cabbagepatch, somewhere in-between, that is just an insult to a SCOT'S MAN... I watched the first episode, "the guy is well to much up himself". I nearly boycotted STAR TREK: into darkness! and that it is a big deal for me, as the WRATH of KHAN is my number one TREK movie.

and is for Radcliff, not rating him on harry potter, can't never read or gotten into the films, ( sorry, I don't follow the flock ). am basing him on his performance in ' a young doctor's notebook'
