Will was dumfounded. The answer machine was now like a monster. At least it could not laugh at his confusion. Will tried to make some sense of the past week and the messages that led up to this yet, he failed to understand. He didn't know whether to feel guilty or like he had been the butt of some prank.
Will did feel absolutely awful and he knew his hotrod building weekend was ruined. How could he possibly concentrate? The rest of Thursday night was restless for Will. He finally got up and replayed the recording, nothing changed. While watching the weather channel he finally fell asleep but, his sleep didn’t last. Early Friday morning Will decided he needed a break, “It’s been a long time AB, let’s go fishing.”
Will threw a fishing rod, tackle, camping gear, and some basic snacks into his pickup. On his way out the door Will stopped and stared at the answer machine. It had the potential to strike again. Will unplugged the phone system, turned out the lights and locked the door.
At the lake Will set up his tent and campsite all while discussing Jasmine’s call with AB. What did the message mean? He went over several possibilities trying to answer his main question,“Why would she do that to me?" Will asked. Fresh mountain air helped Will fall asleep still pondering the possibilities.

He grew up as a solitary kid. His family lived on the outskirts of town with no close neighbors or friends. When things didn’t go well Will would take his dog and go somewhere to sort out what troubled him. He always came back with a fresh outlook and his parents allowed him the freedom he needed. Will’s dog Sadie was a yellow lab and she had been gone for over ten years. Will still missed her and her passing caused Will to invent AB who could not die, at least not before Will.
In school Will was not a social guy. He had no interest in sports and preferred to study alone. Will only had two dates in high school. Both were with girls who invited him to Sadie Hawkins’ dances. Will was as dull a date as they could have found. One girl said, “Will is my father’s idea of my dream date. He is so clueless.”
Will was muscular, handsome, polite and somewhat baby faced. He looked much younger than his age. This probably made him less attractive to the girls.
Will had no sexual experience until technical school. Twice when Will enjoyed a little too much drink he was victimized by rough tech girls. Both times he woke up with a hangover, bruised balls, a sore dick and very little recollection of the festivities.
Later Will got invites to three bachelor parties where the requisite females for hire plied their trade. Will felt out of place at these parties. He was uncomfortable and they did not turn into positive sexual experiences. Will assumed the roll of an observer and attempted to stay out of the action. The final party he attended truly would be the last.
Will became the butt of jokes being told by a hooker who did a stand-up comedy routine at a strip club. When she found out Will embarrassed easily she made him the target of her jokes. The, “Does your baby sitter know you escaped?” question embarrassed Will the most.
Everyone laughed except Will. After suffering through several more of her gaffs Will found an opportunity and escaped the party. Subsequently Will completely avoided parties. He decided women were mean; or at least they liked to be mean to him. He busied himself doing things to please himself and people who appreciated his work.

When Friday morning still did not produce a call from Will, Jasmine decided to take things another step further by confronting him, face to face. Jasmine was an over achiever and she did not take rejection well. She decided Will was rejecting her and since that had never happened she was determined to find out why.
Jasmine knew Will’s shop should be open Friday. She did decide it would be polite to call instead of showing up unannounced. She rapidly punched the number on the handset only to hear, “We’re sorry, this is not a working number,” Jasmine slowed down and tried once more only to get the same message.
Jasmine borrowed Fran’s Toyota to drive by Will’s shop which was dark inside. Could he have left town and missed the recording?
Back at the shop Fran and Toni were now thinking of Will as a lost cause. They discussed the possibility that Will just wasn’t interested. They needed to get Jasmine’s mind off of Will long enough to finish orders. Jasmine was lagging.
When she returned she told them Will was not at his shop or his home.
Fran suggested Will might have had business to take care of and so did they. Toni concurred and told Jasmine he had color work he could not finish without her approval.
Jasmine reluctantly went to work. She wasn’t her usual hard driving self and was easily distracted. Her mind was obviously on another thing nevertheless she muddled through.
Fran and Toni did their best to stay on task and complete everything possible. By afternoon they were caught up on the imperative projects. They quietly left without knowing what would greet them when the shop re-opened on Monday.
Jasmine quietly adjourned to her office and closed the door.
Outside Toni stopped Fran and with one of his flaming gestures said, “I think she’s smitten,” then he asked, “What do you think?”
Fran scowled, “She’s not smitten, she is in love.”
Toni questioned, “How could that be she has only known him a month?”
“I know that look, I’ve had it myself and it’s a curse or maybe a disease and it’s damned hard to get over,” Fran sounded a little depressed.
Toni put his hand on his waste in typical Toni style, “It just doesn’t seem possible.”
“Sometimes the harder they drive the quicker they turn; It’s something my father told me years ago right after my straight arrow husband turned and went the other way,” Fran turned herself and walked to her car.

Saturday dawned a beautiful day with Will on the shore of the small lake he had not visited in years. The trees were taller, the trail was not worn but the birds still sang and the smell of the local foliage brought fond memories. Will once again found the peace he needed and another opportunity sort thoughts while remembering good times. He came to grips with the phone messages and after some consideration decided the last one really was somewhat exciting although, he did not know why.
When Saturday’s light faded Will sat by his campfire watching the sparks rise until only glowing embers remained. Will was more relaxed than he had been in years. Will slept well that night and woke happier the next morning. There were taters to peal and fish to fry for breakfast. Today life was good.
Packing up late Sunday morning Will was more settled and less apprehensive. He was looking forward to a new week and he headed home from the lake refreshed. Will thought he should come back again, very soon.
Sunday afternoon Will made a trip to the grocery store. Heading down the main aisle a familiar female form caught his eye as she rounded the corner to the next aisle. Will stopped, he was almost sure it was Jasmine’s figure. If there was anything Will was not prepared for it was a confrontation with Jasmine. She had gone left so, Will went right toward the deli section which was closed on Sundays.
Will reasoned whoever she was would not come that direction and in a few minutes she would be gone. Will sat in one of the empty chairs watching the clock slow to a virtual crawl. Fifteen minutes seemed like an hour. Will felt it was long enough and now he could get his shopping done. Quickly gathering up the items on his list Will didn’t do any extra shopping. He was happy the store was not busy so he could get through the checkout quickly.
Outside he headed straight for his pickup hurrying to the passenger door to place his groceries inside.

Around the front to the driver’s door and it was blocked by a tall blonde with her heel hooked on his running board.
The look on Will’s face must have been priceless. His eyes darted side-to-side as if to look for an escape route. Will’s mouth instantly went dry and he froze like a deer in the headlights waiting for the inevitable crash.
Jasmine leveled a glare at poor Will making him feel like a small child caught doing something wrong. Neither one of them spoke. It became a silent stand-off with Will looking pitifully compromised and Jasmine breathing heavily like she was going to pummel him. Pursing her lips Jasmine broke the silence. She pointed a finger, “Will you disgust me! You are rude, you have no manners, and you can’t even defend yourself!”
Jasmine’s volume was up and he thought she was going to hit him so when she pulled her fist back, his reaction was unplanned. He grabbed Jasmine in a bear hug and kissed her hard, square on the mouth. Jasmine is a strong girl but, Will had her wrapped like a burrito and wasn’t about to let go. Not until she quit struggling anyway.
Jasmine drew her lips tight as banjo strings and her eyes were wide open and fiery. Will held on and held the kiss. He had never done anything like this. What started as self defense really didn’t feel good. At least not until Jasmine relented and returned the affection.
They remained entwined until Will felt safe to loosen up and Jasmine’s angry breathing slowed to a more structured pace. However, as soon as Will thought he was safe Jasmine unleashed a second tirade, “Will you selfish bastard,” She jerked away and continued, “What kind of asshole doesn’t return calls and disappears for two days without notice?”
Will stammered, “Well, one who was so tired he didn’t look at his message machine for three days,” Will’s pleading eyes stopped Jasmine long enough for him to continue, “Then the uh, you know, kind of made me think you were doing uh, you know something to make me well,” He just couldn’t find the words to describe the audio fuck-fest Jasmine had sent to his recorder.
“You didn’t like the phone sex?” Jasmine taunted, “Bet you got a hard-on, didn’t’ you?”
Will was glad the sun had gone down. He was sure his color was cherry red. He had not been this embarrassed since the bachelor party with the vicious hooker. Once again he was wishing he was somewhere else. He was not the kind of guy who liked being the center of attention much less, being the object of someone’s mirth.
“Yes, sort-of but, well, I couldn’t, you don’t understand how, uh, what, why do you think I left?” Will hadn’t stuttered but he sounded confused with that answer.
It was now obvious to Jasmine he was miserable and she started to feel sorry for him. She reached up to touch Will’s cheek and looked at him with an endearing smile, ”Let’s go somewhere more comfortable we need to spend some time getting to know each other a little better,” Jasmine’s softener tone assured Will she wasn’t going to kick him where it hurt the most.
“I have ice cream and produce that needs to go in the refrigerator,” Will wondered if it wasn’t already running between the seats. It was pretty warm out and Jasmine added to the heat.
“I’ll come help you put things away and we can sit on your back porch in that dusty old swing,” Jasmine smiled.
“How did you know I had a back porch?” Will wondered.
“You were gone for two days remember?” Jasmine tipped her hand. She had walked all the way around his house and his shop looking for him.
After she walked away Will opened the door on his pickup and said, “AB, somehow I don’t want to hear what else she knows about me.”

Will’s home was not large like Jasmine’s home-shop complex. It had only two bedrooms, 1-1/2 baths, an office and a small basement. What does a single guy really need? It was adequate and low maintenance. Will kept a neat home.
Jasmine had visited different bachelors’ pads and this was the best she had seen other than Toni’s place which was like a hospital’s operating room. Will’s place felt really comfortable and she caught herself thinking she could fit well here. The thought caused her to reevaluate her aversion to commitment. Perhaps there was a way she could be close to one guy but, only on her terms.
Jasmine always had an aversion to long term one-on-one relationships. She viewed them as boring and lifeless drudgery. They were something society dictated for acceptance. Jasmine was in a business that pushed the boundaries and she was successful because of her ability to change things. Could she push Will’s boundaries? Did he have any boundaries? For all she knew about Will he was becoming more of a mystery.
Will took a couple shop towels out to the back porch. He wiped the dust off the swing which came with the place. Will had never used it but the warm summer night now beckoned as did the beautiful blonde. Will had opened the bottle of wine Jasmine brought and handed a glass to her as he unscrewed the cap on his favorite beer. Clinking glass to bottle Jasmine toasted summer evenings as Will sat down beside her and put an arm around her shoulder. Jasmine responded with a warm hand on Will’s leg. She knew what she was doing; softening most of him up while hardening one part.
Jasmine knew Will was not worldly and had little experience with the hands-on sexuality. Jasmine again wondered if she could mold him into partner who could tolerate her appetite for sexual adventure.
“Will may I ask you a personal question?” Jasmine’s lowered voice made Will nervous, “You don’t have to answer if you don’t want.”
Will quickly figured if he didn’t answer she would re-phrase the question in the form of more questions, “I guess.”
“Are you looking for a soul mate?” she quickly added, “If so, what would she be like?”
Will was quick to pick up on two questions and slow to respond, “That’s two questions,” he bit his lower lip in a distressed manner, “I have not looked because I am not very desirable to women.”
Jasmine was confronted by Will’s lack of self confidence, “Will, you are tall, handsome, gainfully employed and you don’t have any overtly disgusting habits. Why would you think you are not desirable?”
“I’m clumsy around girls, don’t know what to say and they think of me as an oaf,” Will looked down at his feet and began pushing the swing a little faster.
“Could be you just haven’t met the right woman and most girls make the wrong choice,” Jasmine slid her hand a little higher on Will’s thigh, “Be honest with me Will. I want to ask you a couple more questions,” Jasmine was about to put him on the spot and he leaned back with an apprehensive look. “Do you think I am a whore? This caused Will to suck in his breath and before he could answer, “I mean, I really like sex more than most women and I try to be good at it,” Jasmine was first bold and then a little demure, “Does that make me less desirable or attractive to you?”
Will honestly had not considered those things and said, “Jasmine the honest truth is I consider you to be way out of my league,” Will humbly continued, “You are far too beautiful, too smart, you have been more places, you have money and you have more experience in nearly everything than me,” Will slowed down, “And I don’t know what I could possibly have to offer that you do not already have, only better.”
Will’s honesty melted through Jasmine like a hot knife through warm butter. She instantly forgot about converting him because Will was already exactly what she wanted.
Jasmine swung over to straddle Will and kissed him passionately. She took his face in both hands to look squarely at him and said, “Stability Will, you are stable, not flighty,”
Jasmine's hand slipped down across his chest, over his stomach and came to rest on Will’s manhood. With a gentle squeeze Jasmine purred, “And you have a very nice cock.”
