There always has to be a girl at the end

Even if she’s something like a broke wing bird

Who lived out the best part of the story

Just before the lights went down

And there has to be someone

Who’s going to love her forever

Even if he never says it like that

Standing in a half-lit doorway

Looking like the plot kicked him

Upside the head until everything broke

But his heart

And you know – you just know now

How the night doesn’t love anyone as much

As anyone loves it back

It all comes down to that dance

With a thieving angel before he finally opens her

Nothing but a whisper floating out

From the shape of that howl on his lips

While the wind blows our ashes back among the stars

All this happened in the midst of COVID so I am going to write it up to to a fevered moment. CallMeJayne is right and forthright…I take what she says seriously but…I like this and some the stuff called poems…or stories. It is, after all, not a literary journal.
Damn. I can always feel your words come to life. Gorgeous.
Always a beautiful pleasure to read your words. Thank you so much for sharing and wish you a wonderful day.

I like free verse. I really like this free verse. -@
Exquisite! :)
Do you know, there's always a moment in one of your poems when the pictures in my head you evoke just suddenly coalesce with startling clarity, and it all fits together. I love it when it happens. It was the half-lit doorway in this one. Beautiful ❤️
this is insanely gorgeous! You write wonderfully!
Eternal. Sometimes it's as simple as movie night...
Spectacular!
This poem and its gorgeous movie-inspired imagery just flows so beautifully!
I am officially obsessed with this beautiful poem.

The problem with free verse is you can end up with something that isn't a poem at all.

If you like. Generally speaking, there is a place for free verse and that place is in an elementary school. Generally speaking.
Are you going around and commenting this same comment on all the really talented poets poems? Because you said the same thing on Elliotlacey's and I just wonder why you are doing that? Do you just feel so sad about your own writing that you are throwing stones at some of the most talented people here? Or do you just have no idea what a poem is?

I made the same comment because it was the same kind of poem. It's a fairly standard view in academic circles. But I confined my remarks to the work rather than descend into personal abuse. The point you made on The Tempest about rules stifling creativity is a perfectly reasonable basis for an argument in the free verse versus formalism debate. Nothing is beyond criticism; only the other day I criticised a poem by a guy who'd won two Pulitzers.
This is a very silly comment. Do feel free to define what is and what isn't a poem. I'm certain we would all benefit.

A poem is a piece of writing that can't be quoted from except out of context.
