Lilting melodies
Ghost through sunlight
In the tattered theme park
Circling the lovers
Like a haunted merry go round
Of Valentine’s memories
Motes of spring
Whirl around their humid flesh
As the park’s lullaby lathers
Into the blur of the world
And shadows deepen
He kisses fantasies
On her open lips,
His steady touch
Silencing the static
“Trust me.”
Hypnotized by his smile,
She follows
Looks back,
Only for a moment,
To see night strangling day
Murky clouds in a face
Staring back at her
The hand in hers vanishes
Into a creeping vine of gloom
Snaking over her palm
As the carnival music booms
Ripping her hand free,
She scours the area
Fighting the whipping wind,
As her hair dances like serpents
Lashing and biting her skin
The shadows reach for her again
Screaming his name,
She runs from the darkness
Deep into the house of mirrors
And into an abyss of horror
Every reflection hers alone
Each moment of her past
Screaming accusations
Hurtling knives of her mistakes
And all the wreckage before him
That murdered her worth
She whimpers his name
And crashes to the floor,
Skirt blooming beneath her
As she covers her dewing face
He reaches for her
Through the shadows
Just as mirrors shatter around her quivering form
Glittering a million futures
Onto her delicate skin
He claws through the dust
Swirling her skin
Howling through hell
Begging her to open her eyes,
To reach for him again
But his voice disintegrates
Into the glowing zenith of the divine
Shimmering down the curtain of her hair
Before dissolving in darkness.
Trembling inside broken glass,
Buried in agony,
She opens her eyes
Blind.
