Competition Entry: Valentine's Day Poetry
I can't look back,
at what I left in my wake;
it's already time to go once more.
Would have left a note,
if I had a shred of tact,
but I just allowed
myself one last mistake...
Didn't say I'd be back soon, just that I
was just going out to the store.

I don't care how I'm berated,
I know exactly who to call,
I hear your voice and I'm elated,
Even though it's only voicemail.

Screw the razor's edge,
this road will be rocky and rough,
jagged even,
serrated.

Hit the gravel running, stings like pins.
Kissed the pavement hello, goodnight in sin...
Funny how easy it is to find the fucking highway again.

Searing sorrow trails
behind me, tears fill my eyes,
and wind whips my hair like tattered sails.
For guilt like this, there's simply
no disguise.

All we can do now
is dance all night,
and disappear
before the light.

As everything intensifies,
every time we say our goodbyes,
you make me want to tear down the sunrise.

-----

Deep breath out,
then inward, blood
pumping, adrenaline
flowing. Surfacing for
only a moment, gasping
Against a long arm grasping,
wrapping, pulling me back under.
Sneaky, stealthy, slippery things
acting without care...

Beneath the sheets,
there we were, a
perfect pair.

The riptide of our pleasure
torn asunder,
jagged,
chaotically ripped
to pieces with elegant flair.

Facing down demonic fame
and infamous flame,
I remember how
you dared.

Couldn't
believe how easily
you ran me to ground,
I never stood a chance...
Nothing with you
is ever fair.

Rode into town on an engine of romance
and tossed me the most casual glance. The emptiness of you
swallowed me whole... a silken, sweet lair.

Well versed in the art of seduction-
The way you touched so soft,
hit so hard, how you went
straight for the pants,
and stripped
me bare...

I could have
exploded with
the instant attraction,
and at the strong, urgent, glare.

Holding a flower,
Wait another hour...
Another midnight and
maybe she just might.
One more fresh citrus
whiskey sour,
“Got a light?”

Standing there,
in the snow, we
burned the frozen air.

One long second,
completely imperfect-
You knew
exactly what to do.
Kissed me hard,
pulled my hair...

You threw me back
into the fight;
ungloved, naked
and free;
laughing loud,
grinning wide
with sensual delight.

We're not going to back down,
this could be
the last time to get it right.
We'll never surrender,
we'll keep breathing
to the very last ember.

All we can do now
is dance all night,
and disappear
before the light.

With each one of your perfect lies,
and every time we say our goodbyes,
you make me want to tear down the sunrise.

-----

One long second
of moonlight broken,
All the sharpest words
left alive
were spoken.
I almost left
while I was still choking.

Flying down interstate five,
doing ninety-two
and flaming with sensation,

dirt and gravel
in my eyes,

I've never been
so fucking alive.

Tap the wheel in
anticipation...
Just drive,
just try
and relax.
It may be rough,
But I know it'll be over fast...

Dancing memories flash,
my mind screams
in your voice:
“Don't crash!”
but this steel is burning
through my heels
as desperately
I remember
how it feels.

-----

There we were,
in the dark,
alone together,
watching your mark.

Always remembered the devil's due,
Never wiped the sweat from your brow
and didn't dare miss a cue... I adored how
you counted in, under your breath,
“Five four, three, two... Now.”

Walking out into the black
you never failed
to watch your back.

Never left the witch's brew,
it made us stronger, tougher,
filled us with all that we lack;
Burned into my memory-
The most vigorous ingenue.

-----

Tip my hat with
a toxic smile,
wave to
the red and blue
flashing in my rear view.
Bright as night against the desert
brown, they just make me think of you.

Every flat tire, each
fresh hotwire
reminds me...

Twisting the dial,
I remember how
you did
what you did-
rendering my desire,
hotter, and brighter than
the King's own funeral pyre.

Ran and ran for miles;
almost drowned
in the dust.

We blew the doors off that
little town,
all made out of rust.

Blacked out the windows and painted the ceiling;
showed off our own sense of style,
without an ounce of feeling.

Those were the days, when
all you had to do
was shoot me a smile...
Plenty of close calls, and last calls -
made our share of bad calls -
but we made it out
without a trial.

-----

Suddenly, lovely,
handsome,
pure and unjust,

An adamantine body
rippled before us...

How it moved,
stretched, how
it overwhelmed
and touched, how
penetratingly he judged us
seething with erotic prowess
and unending masculine flexure...

But I couldn't bear to hear another
lecture.

Submitting softly
to his hard, brutish elegance,
rolling beneath him, arching my bust
in sensually controlled architecture,
I let him as he wished; gave as was
wanted of me, needed
of me, until

it was sated,

the beast of his appetite.

His heaving breath was as winter's icy gust,
and, he gave to me of himself,
oozing and dripping white-
a sensuous texture...

Oil in water.

The visions I saw...
separating, slanting,
a slippery mixture.

Resting after, muscles tight,
his body curled from
monstrous height.

Still lusting for his vicious streak
I disappeared into the weeds,
sticky and slight,
and covered in greed
knowing too well
the nature of his prize,
and the summit of his peak.

All we can do now
is dance all night,
and disappear
before the light.

As pleasure begins to crystallize,
every time we say our goodbyes,
you make me want to tear down the sunrise.

-----

Wanderlust
and pure conjecture
drove a ranting siren
from home and hearth,
from focus and
fixture.

Every mile away from you made me
crazier,
each snowflake between us made me
shiver,
every man in stead filled me
with a perfect disgust,
every inch farther drove me
wild...

With wanting you.

Defensive, vicious,
chest upthrust,
blackout stepped upon the stage.
Cloaking us in wings of silence,
she challenged you
with hands of fate-
Not a single moment rushed.

The footlights were menacing
and venomous,

malicious,
oh so cruel,

and so began
an endless duel.

You were so brave,
but I grew sick of the debate.
Storming off, crushed, striding away,
so beguiled by eyes of hate,

into arms of comfort.

There he was,
the perfect bait -
so long and tall,
so strong and fierce.

There you were,
the perfect mate,
with perfect aim -
my delicate chest
forever pierced.

Tunneling gale
ripples the fletchings
of your everlasting arrow,
glowing warm within
my impatient body.
The struggle is over,
I cannot wait.

-----

Twisting bodies
forming arches, the bearer
of pleasure arriving late
she bites, he kicks
and strains, thriving on erotic pains.

Amid the chaotic, the coiling,
dripping mass
of female limbs
and whispers hushed
he laid stiff,
tied, growing larger.

I was soft but sharp,
a cloud
of pure
electricity,

sugar and spice,
and ferocious duplicity.

He was hard,
a raging, frenzied creature.
Insane, like
a Byzantine charger.

Each fleeting, momentary ride
left hungry
participants
panting,
drifting,
slipping

into an aching,
pulsing delirium.

Beautiful bodies in perfect merger...
Pled no contest
when they came after us
screaming 'antitrust'.

We just want to dance all night.
We don't even care, we'll bare
our weakest places, and
give in to the terror.

Glancing with passion
they cry out as they must
while they moan and share her,
Rapt and lost with lust and loathing,
frantic, hips driving, hands pacing, breath racing...
Each he, she, him, and her caught mid-thrust;
a hyena's laugh their only clothing.

All we can do now
is dance all night,
and disappear
before the light.

While our bodies harmonize,
Every time we say our goodbyes,
You make me want to tear down the sunrise.

-----

Writhing, weeping, arching with fright,
skilled in the science of mirth,
and not remotely contrite
they played my hand for all I was worth.

Lost that bet holding six or seven aces.
Tried to walk away,
and only made it ten or twenty paces.

Hit the gravel, hard right,
There's a cloud of dirt in my headlights...
Funny how easy it is to find the damn road tonight.

Riding, running,
driving again,
lost in the of memory
of your kiss, burdened only
by horrid bliss, remembering best
when you were mine,

and I was yours,
whenever we wanted, unrestrained,
in all our favorite places,

seeking the secret
of St. Valentine.

Ablaze in the darkness
I wish for sunshine

to extinguish me,
to deliver me

from this
labyrinthine

nightmare
of high speed
chases.

I long

for you, my dear,
and I'll drive all night, I'll press
through the fear.

It's 'what we get',
they laugh,
for living in all
the empty spaces,
for wearing only our
most naked faces.

Always laughed
at the things
they said:

“Lazy girl,”
“Crazy girl,”
“Bad.”

“Play nice,”
“Learn to share,”
“And whatever you do,
don't ever,
ever drive mad.”
