Katherine stared at her phone and clutched her luggage. She knew she shouldn't be looking down when she was supposed to be finding her ride in a new place. But she was too anxious not to text her friend and ensure she was coming for the fiftieth time. To anyone who just happened to look at her that morning, they would be taken aback.
She wore a conservative, knee-length outfit with extremely heavy makeup and huge eye bags under her eye. The poor woman looked like a wet cat who was struggling to swim up to the surface and meow for help. You would feel compelled to go over and help her but would stop once she gave you a cold-hearted sneer.
The tan woman was just a hard nut to crack. “Babe, where are you?” She asked the question to no one in particular as her heels clicked loudly on the floor.
Her hips swayed back and forth as her thick body maneuvered through autopilot out of the crowded airport. People were heading to work, visiting parents, and just going about their day being pushed aside by her. Kathrine was a dominating force even in her miserable state being six foot in stature.
Her skin was nice and flawless, with her mascara forming gorgeous cat eyes. She was stunning but massively insecure and wanted to get out of here. But she couldn't just yet. The tan woman couldn't run away and hide in a corner like she would as a child. They had talked for many years about meeting up for her to chicken out now.
Like a blessing from heaven, her phone began to vibrate in her hand and its screen lit up. On it was the name and face of her best friend of three years. She wanted to make a face call. “Oh, crap.” Katherine muttered as she began to stress out. The tall woman looked around to find somewhere private.
There was the women's bathroom a few steps away so she practically ran over to it and slammed its door shut. From what the awkward woman could see there wasn't anyone else in the bathroom so she could speak openly. With a long-winded sigh, she set her luggage down, fluffed her short hair, and made sure her makeup wasn't smudged.
All the woman wanted was to impress her friend. They had been speaking for so long that she felt attached to her. Anytime they had even the most minor of arguments she felt had an anxiety attack. It was unhealthy but Kat enjoyed the thrill that came with their turmoil relationship. It was one of the closest and longest ones she had ever had in her entire life so it was special.
Kat didn't even wear makeup but for this meeting, she put it on for the first time. The process was very messy as she bought just random products that didn't match her skin like she thought they would. Eventually, after asking for the help of another online friend, she managed to look presentable. Still, Katherine could tell it wasn't that perfect.
This left her jittery as she accepted the phone call and looked down at it. The screen went black momentarily then she was met with the woman who had stolen her heart. She was a few weeks older than Katherine, they met when she was finishing her bachelor's. These days she was working on a master's, with their conversations often focused on how much studying she was doing.
But you could never tell this with a first glance at her face. She was flawless with caramel skin, a flared-out nose with piercings, and curly hair that had soft green highness that matched her eyes. Kat felt her heart stutter at the sight of her and wished they were holding hands already. The other woman must have felt the same as she gasped and her face brightened up as she started to talk.
“Katherine!” The Latina cried out happily. She was walking in what looked to be a dense neighborhood, huffing from the journey. “I'm almost there but wow, you look so hot! You look amazing!”
Kat blushed darkly, not used to being complimented this way. “Sisi, you're so sweet. I followed one of those tutorials you showed me a few months ago and I'm glad it worked out well.” This was the truth as the Latina was once heavily into makeup and styling.
Sisi laughed with her squeaky voice and smiled at her. “I'm so happy you did this for me.” The audio became filled with static and she broke up as she continued. “I'll be there in a couple of minutes. Can you turn on your location for me?”
“Of course!” She felt like a giddy child as she pulled down her phone settings and turned on her tracker. They had shared their location before to make sure each other got home safely at night.
The punk woman laughed at her eagerness which made Kat turn pink. She looked the woman over and sucked her teeth. “You look so beautiful, Katherine. You look stunning right now.”
Katherine watched Sisi's eyes darken as she spoke and she gulped. The younger woman knew exactly what that look meant. She'd had it numerous times over voice calls when her parents were out of the house and her dorm was empty.
The darker-skinned woman didn't know what label to put on their relationship. They weren't exactly girlfriends, as Sisi messed around with others all the time and Katherine didn't want a partner. She just felt like her life was moving too fast with college and her apprenticeship to have something else to worry about.
But they weren't just best friends since best friends didn't send each other nudes and sexts daily. They were something else that Katherine struggled to describe. This meeting was another example of their weird situationship.
