An operetta a light or humourous theme. It was simply a way of differentiating between Grand Opera and Light Opera.
I wouldn't class the theme of Les Mis, Miss Saigon or Phantom as light or humourous. They are operas in the true sense of the word.

Yes, but that has evolved from the beginning of the use of the word operetta. Opera originated in serious topics then opera buffe came along. If comparing Operettas to opera, then subject would be the defining differentiation. Operetta vs Musicals is more of a distinction behind the structure than just content. there is interspersed dialogue rather than just recitative but it focuses more on the acting and singing rather than requiring the principles to do a lot of dance. Musicals feature dancing from all characters and allow for a different style of singing. Operettas still feature primarily belle canto singing.

I could go into this all day long! I love the subject and evolution of vocal arts. this was probably my favorite section of my music theater courses.

My favourite is Miss Saigon, a modernized version of Madame Butterfly. However they are really both operas as there are no spoken parts.
A few of the "musicals" named by others are also operas.

Actually, they are considered an operetta. Much of what has been mentioned are. Les Mis, Phantom, Oklahoma, Sweeney Todd, Rent (although Jonathan Larson classified it as a rock opera), Jesus Christ Superstar and a few others. Operetta,or operette, mean little opera. Content are large considerations into the genre.

Sweeney Todd! And Guest (clever name) is right, the Len Cariou/Angela Landsbury one, not the Johhny Depp one (they cut the best song in the whole show!). I saw the original on Broadway, though not with the original cast. Stunning.

Also, this sounds dumb, but trust me, there is a great musical called Urinetown (giant mega-corporations charge people for the right to pee). Smart, subversive, very funny but with some serious ideas bouncing around in there.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

And Frozen does count! I LOVE that movie. I still get choked up. The line "the cold never bothered me anyway" in Let It Go is genius.
.

I totall agree with the Urinetown add! Great Musical. The writers did a very good job with the subject matter, being that is was a social commentary. I played Penelope Pennywise and cannot express how much fun singing "It's a Privilege to Pee" is.

I have been performing in musicals since I was five, so I definitely have an opinion on the matter!

Operetta: Sweeney Todd or Phantom of the Opera
Classic Movie Musical: My Fair Lady
Golden Era of Musicals: South Pacific
Modern Americal Musical: Chess
Contemporary Musical: Avenue Q
Cult Musical: Rocky Horror Picture Show

Live RAH Musical: Chess (Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, Kerry Ellis, Adam Pascal)
West End: Billy Elliot
All Time Favorite: Company (Raul Esparza)

Like Isaid, I have an opinion!!!

I am a homebrewer so I like most types of beer. I am a snob though so the cheapest beer i will drink is Shiner Bock

I enjoy a good Pinot or Cab in the Winter, and a Rose in the summer

I enjoy Canadian Club Whiskey and New Amsterdam Gin. I drink the whiskey straight and mix the gin with just about anything.
