About

These days, I tend to like erotica rather than porn. Porn's OK, and some people here are really ingenious with it, but in the end it gets a bit samey and mechanical. The real sexy stuff to me is the set-up: how did the people (presumably) get into the situation; what do they want out of it; what's in their heads; how does that change as the story goes on, and so forth. That's not to say I'm a great writer, but I know great writing when I see it, and so does my one-eyed friend.

Interests
Oh, you know, the usual things -- travelling, reading, hiking... I'd like to find a really sexy, smart female hiking companion and get off on the rocks -- but my wife probably wouldn't approve.

Favorite Books
After several tries, I got into Anne Rice's "Beauty" trilogy. The violence and so forth put me off at first, and indeed got rather boring, but I finally realized that what she is doing is the purest form of fantasy. She's using the story to explore a lot of seriously forbidden areas, places that we don't allow ourselves to go, even in our dreams. There's no relationship to "real life" but there's a real connection with what goes on in our nasty old unconscious.

AR is not without wit, too. Sex is pretty funny, if you think about it, but very few of the stories on here have any humour in them. Don't you laugh a lot when you're with someone you fancy?

Favorite Authors
Novelists? I liked Julian Barnes's latest; Waterland by Graham Swift; Michael Houllebecq (god alone knows why). I like Dorothy Dunnett's early-modern romances, too, but don't tell anyone..

Favorite Movies
I liked Secretary, who wouldn't, but I haven't come across, so to speak, anything else mainstream that comes close. I love anything by Almodovar and Penelope Cruz. I would love to see a version of Downton Abbey with the downtown downlow bits left in. One dirty dead diplomat doesn't cut it, but it shows the way.

Favorite Music
Depends. Currently on my iPhone -- Adele, Marriage of Figaro, Tom Waits, John Fahey, Susan McKeown, Bach's cello suites, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Antibalas, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The Chieftains, Aarvo Part's De Profundis, the Brooklyn Qawwali Band, Ry Cooder, Gotan Project. And so on. I haven't listened to half the tracks, to be honest.
