Mid 20s bachelor in the circle city really just here to chat with people and read some well written erotica. I have a BS in engineering (working on a MS) from midwest schools and that reflects a lot in my hobbies/friend group/reading tastes ect. I'm definitely a nerd, but I'm going to go ahead and claim the title of "Cool Nerd".
Interests I enjoy reading so much I organize two book clubs (one a public facing group and one a group with my local friends). Why do I do it? It's a way out of my head, it's a way into other peoples heads, it's interesting and informative (nonfiction, philosophy, biographies), it's moving and beautiful, it can be simultaneously hilarious and cutting.
For similar reasons I'm a pretty avid movie watcher - mostly the Oscar nominees but I'm not a snob. In all things media, I only consume that which a friend (or ideally many friends) have given the thumbs up to; it's a good policy and it means I don't waste my time.
Board games: it's how I met my college roommates and my local friend group and it's formed a really great template to my social life. It's an activity that we all enjoy and what we'll do when we don't have things to talk about, as with any group the best parts aren't the games (though we've had some barn burners) it's the kibitzing and fun that happens before and after.
I've been playing trumpet since primary school and I've kept with it ever since: high school, university and now in a community band. Yes the median age is above 65 but they're damn good, the music is great, and there are enough people in my generation to make it feel cool.
That's just about it in terms of my regular hobbies, historically I have a lot of experience with Operas - so that's neat?
Favorite Books Genre wise I'm all over the place. I'll list the genre and some of my favorite authors or books: Lit fiction (David Foster Wallace, Jonathon Franzen, Cormac McCarthy), Sci Fi/Social Commentary (Kurt Vonnegut, Margaret Atwood, Jeff Vandermeer, Neal Stephanson), psychological thrillers/horror (Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, Thomas Harris), YA fiction (John Green, Lev Grossman, JD Salinger), biographies (Ron Chernow), philosophy (subjects include animal ethics, apologies, pain), general nonfiction.
If I had to pick one favorite book: Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
Favorite Authors Also difficult to say: Stephen King and David Foster Wallace hold a special place as do John Green, Gillian Flynn, Ron Chernow, Kurt Vonnegut and Margaret Atwood. I intend to read all of their works at least once.
Favorite Movies Too many to detail, a good bisection would be: Mad Max: Fury Road, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Ladybird, Fight Club
Favorite TV Shows Not a big show watcher, but I've hit the essentials, a bisection of my favorites: Game of Thrones, 30 Rock, Breaking Bad, Community.
Favorite Music Genres include: Progressive Rock (Coheed and Cambria), Pop-Art-Folk (Think Hozier or Kacey Musgraves), Alt-Rock (Arctic Monkeys)
