I'm no expert but usually I just start with that something that is meaningful to me (a particular scene, moment, feeling or line, say for example how the character looked in a stream of light or the facial expression it had at a specific point in time) something that has me fixating, something I really want to get just right. Then I start painting it with words, an interior dialogue, like I'm having a conversation with someone and I'm trying to let that person in on the secret; it helps me put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard these days) and once I have that "scene" I just build on it naturally, it kind of flows, I give it a setting, create a backstory or the chain reaction. But everyone has a unique and personal way of doing it, the trick is to find what works for you.
