‘Left’ and ‘Right’ mean different things to different people. Most people think of ‘Left’ as entailing cultural liberalism and socialistic economics with Right being a combination of religious conservatism and Laissez-Faire capitalism. However, most politically ‘Left-leaning’ developed countries have a mixture of social liberalism and Laissez-faire capitalism with a smattering of social welfare programs like universal health care. Most right leaning developed countries have a combination of corrupt corporate welfare and authoritarian policies.
The U.S. is right leaning no matter what party is in power. The corporate welfare is going strong and we have the weakest social welfare programs of the G7. The U.S. is not authoritarian yet, but we could slip into it if we keep gerrymandering our way out of democracy. Tyrants are voted into power by minorities who work the system. Power begets more power when the politicians pick their voters rather than vice versa.
