Biden was so obviously impaired during that debate that it dampened any remaining enthusiasm in liberal leaning younger people. If he remained on the ticket turnout would have been wrecked. Harris on the ticket will turn out more dependable Democratic voters who would otherwise think ‘Why should I drag myself to the polling place we’re doomed?’. Then the whole D ticket including Senate and House races would be in more danger than ever. Most liberal leaning voters do think Harris has a better chance than Biden even if it’s only a few points.

At least with a Harris ticket there will be better Democratic turnout and better House and Senate results even if we end up with the Donald anyway.

Those different groups were not measured in the red states.

The goal is not just to measure predispositions to murder by individuals. It’s also to Look at policy impact on murder rates due to state and local laws drawn up by politicians running those states. Blue states tend to have more gun control. If letting everyone have guns everywhere without background checks (or barely any) was such a good policy and the good guys with guns all shoot the bad guys with guns as a result, then the red states would be way ahead. They are not.

There has been an increase in the proportion of male vs female readership. I appreciate our quality authors male and female. You know who you are (mostly!). Comment counts on stories with female-appearing authors are not always proportional to story quality. A comment from another author you like is worth much more than ‘That was hot’ from someone with a bare bones profile.

I love to visit the west coast of the US and for many years I had California dreams. Then my west coast friends started living through a lot more heat waves (even in Oregon) wildfires, drought and earthquakes. The east coast is my home and I’m feeling lucky to live here. ‘Left’ and ‘Right’ mean different things to different people. Most people think of ‘Left’ as entailing cultural liberalism and socialistic economics with Right being a combination of religious conservatism and Laissez-Faire capitalism. However, most politically ‘Left-leaning’ developed countries have a mixture of social liberalism and Laissez-faire capitalism with a smattering of social welfare programs like universal health care. Most right leaning developed countries have a combination of corrupt corporate welfare and authoritarian policies.

The U.S. is right leaning no matter what party is in power. The corporate welfare is going strong and we have the weakest social welfare programs of the G7. The U.S. is not authoritarian yet, but we could slip into it if we keep gerrymandering our way out of democracy. Tyrants are voted into power by minorities who work the system. Power begets more power when the politicians pick their voters rather than vice versa.
