On the "across the Pond" differences: I think I got a couple surprised comments when I used the word "flat" meaning "apartment" in a poem (I think I removed the poem from Lush now to post elsewhere). We normally say "apartment" here in Canada but it fit the metre and I'm familiar with UK English from watching too much UK TV in my youth (Python, Dr. Who, and many more) so I just naturally used it.
