No way in hell should it be banned and it does not have any effect on male-female relations. That is stupid.
Attempting to ban porn on campuses would be such a waste of time. Most upperclassmen live off campuses anyhow.
Banning anything from campus only inspires students to beat the system. Can you imagine students unleashing their enormous abundance of creativity and energy into getting porn past the pompous anti-porn authorities.
And would a ban of porn violate the students Constitutional rights? No doubt such an idiotic move would be challenged in court.
Please! What would that accomplish? It would motivate students to create ways around these asinine rules.
That would be a waste of time and effort.
It all depends on your point of view.
If you're using a school computer (not the WiFi, but a hard wired school computer), then yes, they can restrict what sites you visit (including porn.) If they want to restrict their WiFi, then so be it. Honestly, they'll never truly ban porn because you can bypass this and access whatever site you want with your own internet access (i.e. your data plan.)
However, college campuses are populated mostly by adults. Let adults be adults. If they want to look at porn, that is their business.
If college campuses want to restrict their WiFi, that is their choice.
I'm with the schools being able to restrict content on the school computers similar to what libraries do. However if you are on your own phone, tablet or lap top what you search and where you do it is up to you. As long as it doesn't involve minors. Leave the kids out of porn.
I don't think that's even possible. Okay, the network admins can probably block certain web sites with success, but college kids have brains and are highly motivated to jerk off. Probably drive kids out of the dorms sooner
I went to a private college where they had a filter on their WIFI. One of the guys I knew set up a VPN at his house, which was close to the campus, and gave everyone of his friends and Username and Password to it. Then there was the proxy server sites, and then a few went off campus to sit outside the Waffle House and torrent their porn from there. The really desperate used Dial Up.
So I would say "don't bother". Those who want to look at porn will find a way.
No. But the school shouldn't let them watch it on the school's wifi.
Many colleges and universities are doing their best to ban other forms of free speech - anything that doesn't meet the approved agenda of the Admin or various factions of the student body often has many barriers thrown up to prevent its appearance on campus, or is protested, attacked, and all possible attempts made to silence it or drive the speakers away, so why not ban porn too? Why draw the line anywhere? Why not ban anything that even one person on campus finds offensive? I'm sure that on any campus you could find some number of people that find porn offensive.
Understand, I'm not in any way in favor of banning porn on campus other than on services or equipment owned by the university, if they so choose; however, I'm also not in favor of infringing on any other type of legal (i.e. anything that's not a direct cause of panic or incitement of violence) free speech on campus either. Too often a group that threatens violence is able to silence other voices because, let's face it, most college administrators are either cowards or in complete agreement with the anti-First Amendment folks. Or both.
Isn't the purpose of education, to have an open mind and to learn? To hear differing points of view? Universities today have become places where no one challenges the thought process of the students. They've become completely intolerant and unaccepting of any idea or person they don't agree with. A University that gets public funds, in other words our tax dollars, should allow speakers from all sides of an issue to speak at their publicly funded facility.
Your example for a church is the same as the University. Churches do not get public funds, and are private property. You can stand on public property outside the church and say whatever you want, that is protected speech. Going inside the church and disrupting services is violating the church goers 1st amendment rights because you are disrupting their freedom of religion.
Of course at university, in the mid 2000s, we had plenty of internet porn, but the free stuff was the small, short mpegs. Most guys would pick up Penthouse, Playboy, and the other nudie mags, and plaster their walls with the centerfolds.
One popular thing in the dorms, was to place the centerfold strategically so the light switch would poke through between the model's pussy lips.
Lots of porn cd's were passed around the dorm, and there was still some with VHS cassettes. Of course, all this was comon at the frat house. But we had lots of women constantly hanging around the frat house and at night the thin walls did nothing to mask all the sounds of real sex.
Every now and then you'd hear of someone getting in trouble trying to access porn on the library computers. Duh? Like who'd do that? It'd be impossible to hide.
Self righteous people pushing there agenda on others. Not just no but hell no. How many children were abused by people that use there high and mighty positions? I grew up in an area where this preacher pushed his powers of position on the town folk only to find out he was fucking is two daughters since they were three. Finally went to jail after it was exposed. If you don't like porn don't look at it.
Hell no! I would think that it’s college kids that keep the wheels of the porn trade, well oiled.
No it can be a stressful time plus a time for curiosity and exploration.
Fuck the idea that porn inherently harms women. When i watch porn, I watch feminist lesbian porn by and for women anyway. When we control the production and consumption like that, it's damn sure not harming us.
The assumption that porn necessarily exploits women for men's pleasure is super fucked up. If there is specific porn that is exploiting women, deal with that porn production, not all of it.
Nope. Let people have their fun. Sometimes they can't get it in reality. So they get it how they can.
I don’t see how it could be banned except by restricting internet access within the school. And for most US schools, i.e. all public ones, that would create a free speech problem. Apart from that very significant legal issue, if porn doesn’t actually cause the problems it’s accused of then there’s not much reason to ban it.
