How important is it to you to own your own house?

I guess I'm still old school. Owning property is still important to me. I own the home I am in and own two other's that I rent. I own the building my small business is in. It isn't for status as none of the places are big expensive places. For me it is more about a sense of security and peacefulness that where I live and work is mine.
Propery most often increases in value over time. I see home owning along with other property investments as part of the wealth building process. It works!

Plus, when you own your own home, you make the decisions about your home and property.
I fully own my house. No mortgage. The peace of mind alone makes the sacrifice of putting almost every penny I earned into paying it off as fast as I could worth it. So many people have lost their homes because they couldn't pay the mortgage after losing their job. Same with renters, so many people right now facing eviction.

Oh my, so many reflections about this topic. My ex-hubby and I had good jobs and bought a very nice 2-story in a great neighborhood. Dead-end street ending at a pond. Walking trail. Perfect for raising a family. Upon my divorce, I bought out his equity. My son was very young and I needed support from my awesome neighbors. I decided to stay in the town to keep my son near his dad instead of moving to where my family was. Maintaining that large house on my own was financially draining, but I can't say I regret it, because my son had a great childhood there and I had great support as a single mom from neighbors. But, as soon as my son graduated, I sold it. Took a ton of my belongings to Goodwill and downsized to an apartment 1/3 of the size. And THAT has given me peace of mind. I know for sure what my bills are each month. No worries about roofs, air conditioners, appliances, etc. So, for me, I enjoyed both. But, as long as I am single, it is condo/apt living from now on. And becoming a minimalist has brought me tremendous peace. I want memories/experiences from here on out. No use for more things.
I don't like to own my house. I just wanna move to places, living in different types of household ... Also, I don't like to own stuffs, it's too much stuffs to think off creating unnecessary clutter. I just wanna die a free soul, belonging to the nature. But seems most don't understand that ...
For me personally its a huge deal. My first apartment was about 200 sq ft, no hot water and infested with rats. Buying my own place after years of slumlord bullshit was a huge deal for me. Realistically renting is cheaper although massive growth in home prices has turned homes in to major profit sources in many cases. Buying a home is about lifestyle. Prices where I live (suburban/rural) are similar to US suburbs, about $300K for 1500-1800 sq ft but most homes here have finished basements that double the living space. I bought my current house about 5 years ago and its increased in value by about 33%; apparently prices are being driven up by folks escaping the Covid risk in big cities. I've lived in apartments, hotels, condos and houses and if you can afford it house is the only way to go.

basements are nice...

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Very important to have a place of your own when always traveling. Nothing is more enjoyable than my own bathtub.
Especially since so many hotels are replacing tubs with showers.
I think property can be a liability because it ties you down and I like to move, that being said I also think I have to own my own property. Renting is enriching your landlord and not yourself. It’s not financially viable in the long term.

I agree, however I also think that buying a home is like choosing to have children. You better have the resources to back it up. And if you don't, I see it as irresponsible.

Things are bad right now, but in the new year things are going to get a lot worse in the US. People are going to get evicted on masse.

This idea of the American Dream is going to fuck people over just like it did in 2008.

Lucky for us not everybody on the planet lives in America.

It's also good if someone else pays for it.

Good thinking, Os.

Exactly why l've invested in some rental properties. The rent makes my payments. And being an owner-financer is an option too.
Being a home owner can be expensive but it's a lot easier then being a renter.
I can get broadband connected, a boiler replaced, cable TV installed, or the white goods in the kitchen replaced any time I want.
When I was renting getting any one of them done was a total pain, taking far too long and lots of boring paperwork.

Add in that because you're the owner of the property and you don't need to allow for someone with a set of spare keys marching into your house whenever they want, makes it a wonderful feeling.

I'm also highly likely to have posted this from a phone so there may be typos or odd word changes, auto correct can be a pain.

Id rather pay rent to myself (Mortgage) than to someone else
