Concern for California as epic fires spread disaster

I really don't know what we can do for California right now as epic wildfires are spreading mass destruction. The city of Paradise, California has been destroyed. Malibu was evacuated, and many thousands of homes destroyed. 29 people have been killed by the fires so far. I have no idea how many businesses destroyed along with all the jobs that go with them. It is destruction on a massive scale.

I hope you all keep southern California in your mind for donations. The people are going to need a lot of help.

****

The latest news is that 42 people have been killed in the fires.
Northern California is being devasted by the unfortunately-named Camp Fire. The death toll is in the 70s'. Over a thousand people are missing, albeit with the possibility of several people being reported missing more than once. Paradise, California will never be what it used to be. It'd be lucky if 10% of the original population should decide to move back and rebuild their lives. The air quality is fluctuating between "very unhealthy" and "hazardous".

The thing you should donate is money. Google "camp fire where to donate". If you donate items, it burdens the community because then there has to be people to sort through it; with money, they can just buy what they need. Donations of blood don't travel very well, so if you live too far away, that won't help, either.

Wait - this was written in 2018? You mean the democrats in government have learned NOTHING since 2018???? Look whats just happening ALL OVER AGAIN in 2025 ......

Time of California Democrats to be dumped into the ocean.

Wildland fires and their subsequent impact have little to do with whether a state government is Dem or Republican. Suggest you read up on the Granite Mountain hotshots, 19 firefighters that tragically perished in an Arizona wildfire. GOP has been in charge in Arizona for decades but the fatalities were not the first in Arizona wildfires.

As tragic as wildfires are, some are really accidental, freaks of nature, unusual circumstances, and can truly occur regardless of the government in place. Wildfires all over the world have been happening since the beginning of time.

However, the recent (current) fires in California- the absolute out-of-control fires that have been predicted for years, but yet were met with utter lack of preparedness, and some arrogant smugness by the State administration officials - are a different story altogether. The rampant and unfettered - and totally wrong - "environmentally friendly" decisions made by "green" lobbying groups, groups known for "eco-terror" and the wrong-headed support of junk science in place of proper forest management are completely at fault here. Decades of unmanaged dry brush, empty reservoirs, diverted run-off, non-functioning hydrants (and, with no concrete evidence presented to data but significant amounts of hearsay, video feeds and some forensic evidence) and arson, merged with the naturally occurring Santa Ana winds c built the perfect firestorm to destroy a local population center and an economy. Fires can and will ALWAYS occur, but NOT like the recent LA Fires.

The Liberal/progressive (yes - Democrats AND Republicans) governments that have controlled environmental policies and decisions in CA for decades is completely to blame.

Displaying a total lack of empathy to jump at the chance to spin a tragedy into a political diatribe. And with all the inherent knowledge that a bostonian would have for the intricacies of California. Regurgitating made-up fox news soundbites only demonstrates that you know nothing and bring nothing. Shove your alt-right agenda.

Shove your leftism. There is nothing "alt-right" about my agenda - it is an inteligent, conservative agenda. Period. End of story. The victims of the disaster don't want "empathy" and "hand wringing" - they want and demand answers. I have some very liberal friends in the affected areas, and they're out for blood. They have been assured for years and years that they are safe, their property is safe and secure, that the firefighting plans and apparatus to contain fires were in place and adequate. Clearly, they were "misinformed". If you are looking at the disaster in California and NOT seeing that it is as much a disaster of political and environmental mismanagement as it is a financial disaster for those whose lives have been upended, I feel sorry for you. Years - decades - of political posturing and "kissing radical environmentalist ass" put them in a position of being unable to deal with a completely predictable natural phenomenon. Forest fires, floods, windstorms, etc have been a way of life for everyone since the beginning of time. We prepare for what we know is coming. To do anything else is criminal mismanagement, especially in an area so financially capable of being completely prepared.

Empty reservoirs? Rain and snow melt being sent to sea and not collected? Cultural and controlled burns of accumulating dead vegetation in areas prone to fire being banned? Hydrants with no water pressure? Fire department budgets cut to the bone? Equipment sitting unprepared and unmaintained? Dams being destroyed and dismantled? Blaming "climate change" and the "climate crisis"? Really?????? Is that the "responsible" liberal approach to addressing a problem that has always existed??

And calling me a "Bostonian" as if that, combined with your infantile "alt-right" attempt at insult is somehow going to make me back down - sorry.

I'm an outdoorsy person, and I hunt, fish, camp and hike all the time. I am quite aware of proper conservation techniques - we have significant forests here, and guess what? Our forest services actually do controlled burns every year. We practice proper forest management. Apparently, "California" should take some lessons. Oh - and as a chemist, I'm fully aware of the risks of stacked and accumulated dry fuel, high winds and low humidity and what they mean in an area where fires can spread with astounding speed. Are you? Or is your focus on empathy and "feeling good" and not being controversial?

At this point, empathy is a given, but accountability is on the front burner. My friends in LA - liberals that they are - have indicated their desire for serious consequences. One has told me that she wishes to see life imprisonment with no chance of parole for some of the "officials".

Are you one of those officials?

Congratulations. You have just won the diplomacy award of the year. Smh.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

I was considering having some background characters in my story die in a fire in NYC in 1907, but I think I'll go with tuberculosis instead.
