You know, if you were to list your favorite horror films what would they be? They'd don't have to be in any particular order.

But tell me what you like.

Here's mine, assorted randomly.

1. The Excorcism of Emily Rose
2. The Witch
3. Cabin in the Woods.
4. Jennifer's Body
5. The Others

"The Punished Nonpartisan" <- Extreme BDSM and humiliation story. Heavy on plot. Served on a plate of political drama with a side of domestic terror. Currently Free download.

Jocelyn the Wicked <- futanari, fantasy fan fic, and some tentacles that escaped the laboratory

This is a list of movies which I feel strongly fall into the "horror" genre, though I doubt all of them are universally agreed on as horror films.

1. Duel
2. Vertigo
3. Wait Until Dark
4. Night of the Living Dead (1969)
5. Trainspotting

2. Vertigo

You know what? I still haven't seen that one and everyone around me be like "That's totally your movie!"

If that's true I'd also recommend North By Northwest and Wait Until Dark.

Not sure these are precisely in order, but:

The Haunting (1963) - eerie adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House
Carnival of Souls (1962) - creepy movie that should be better known
Near Dark (1987) - one of the best vampire movies ever, even if I found the ending weak
Nosferatu (either version) - another classic vampire movie, originally a 1922 silent, remade in 1980 by Werner Herzog
Alien (1979) - possibly the best sf-horror ever made

Near Dark is excellent

Just 5? That's difficult

Sleepaway camp
Halloween
Candyman
Final girls ( its more comedy than horror though )
Slumber party massacre

"Slumber Party Massacre" that's a title that screams cheese. I love it.

I randomly have a copy of Halloween. Haven't watched it though. I probably should.

Hound of the Baskervilles

I almost hate to ask, but which version? It's been filmed so many times. I'm partial to the TV version from the Jeremy Brett Holmes series.

Definitely. I am not generally a fan of slasher movies and I love Halloween (assuming we're talking the 1978 original here, not some godawful remake).
Jaws
Alien
The Cabin In The Woods
Super 8
Deep Rising

As far as pure horror, nothing will dethrone Jaws. Alien will always be number 2 and the other three might change up over time. They are slightly scary but full of humor which is always a good thing.
The same GQP demanding we move on from January 6th, 2021 is still doing audits of the November 3rd, 2020 election.
1. The Blob.

2. Deliverance.

3. Jaws.

4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

5. The video of my first marriage.

GOOD list.

Mine:
The VVitch
Cabin in the Woods
Near Dark
Night of the Living Dead
The Ring

Carnival of Souls belongs there, but night of the Living Dead bumped it off. Alien too. I LOVE Super 8, but it doesn't seem horror-y enough to make the list. And I DEEPLY love Jennifer's Body, but there's only 5 spots.

That we share 3 out of the 5 does not surprise me.

Listing just 5 is going to be hard.

Halloween (1978)
The VVitch
Near Dark
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Psycho (1960)

May I sneak in an honorable mention?

Nightshade Part 1 & Nightshade: Part 2

Interesting to see two mention Jaws. It is probably my favorite (or second favorite depending on mood) Spielberg movie. However, I have never really seen it as horror. It's a monster movie thriller more in the vein of King Kong or Godzilla, with the focus squarely on the three men, esp. Sheriff Brody, and their struggle with the "monster" (and, ultimately, nature as man v. nature is the dominant theme in a lot of monster movies). It has its horrific moments and some very well done suspense, but that just gets it to "thriller" in my book. Not sure it really works as horror for me.

Would Alien fall in the same category to you?

Given that I put it on my list, no. Alien is horror with an s-f setting. It is about fear of the unknown and confronting forces beyond our understanding. Set it in an old house and replace the alien with a demon and nothing much changes. An argument could be made for it sequing into something more like Jaws in Ripley's final showdown with the alien. And even there, an argument could equally be made that she's the "final girl" in an s-f slasher movie.

And I don't deny that Jaws could be considered horror. I just don't find that vibe in it myself. Other's mileage may vary.

Just so long as its the original if its Rob Zombies version kindly escort it to the trash ?

Edit
Also If you love cheese then you'd love Slumber Party massacre
Its awesome plus it was written and directed by a woman
Me and two others here did a sort of homage to it with Slasher Party massacre.

Rob Zombie is kind of a creep. Also, looks like the Halloween I have was the recent repraise, not the 1978 original... mmm...

Yes. When "she" is in the vestibule and the Allen girl approaches the elevator.

De Palma doesn't even eyeball the vestibule, just leaves the camera alone.
