Not sure these are precisely in order, but:

The Haunting (1963) - eerie adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House
Carnival of Souls (1962) - creepy movie that should be better known
Near Dark (1987) - one of the best vampire movies ever, even if I found the ending weak
Nosferatu (either version) - another classic vampire movie, originally a 1922 silent, remade in 1980 by Werner Herzog
Alien (1979) - possibly the best sf-horror ever made

Definitely. I am not generally a fan of slasher movies and I love Halloween (assuming we're talking the 1978 original here, not some godawful remake).

As far as pure horror, nothing will dethrone Jaws. Alien will always be number 2 and the other three might change up over time. They are slightly scary but full of humor which is always a good thing.

Interesting to see two mention Jaws. It is probably my favorite (or second favorite depending on mood) Spielberg movie. However, I have never really seen it as horror. It's a monster movie thriller more in the vein of King Kong or Godzilla, with the focus squarely on the three men, esp. Sheriff Brody, and their struggle with the "monster" (and, ultimately, nature as man v. nature is the dominant theme in a lot of monster movies). It has its horrific moments and some very well done suspense, but that just gets it to "thriller" in my book. Not sure it really works as horror for me.

Given that I put it on my list, no. Alien is horror with an s-f setting. It is about fear of the unknown and confronting forces beyond our understanding. Set it in an old house and replace the alien with a demon and nothing much changes. An argument could be made for it sequing into something more like Jaws in Ripley's final showdown with the alien. And even there, an argument could equally be made that she's the "final girl" in an s-f slasher movie.

And I don't deny that Jaws could be considered horror. I just don't find that vibe in it myself. Other's mileage may vary.
