My, then 19 year old, cousin used to babysit my siblings and I until I was around 15. Towards the latter end of this time and with my younger siblings safely tucked up in bed, she would ask me if my father had any 'dirty mags' as we called them. Dutifully I would go and fetch a bundle down and could never understand why she took so long to look at the pictures, and for that matter, what she saw in them. It took me a couple more years and the finding of a mag in an old car repair yard to realise what she saw in them! I still remember that first story and the images that it painted in my mind smile

I'm now thinking how wet my cousin must have been when going home after babysitting us! Oh to be a fly on her bedroom wall!!
used to read penthouse letters cause I thought they were so funny, and in most cases, very unrealistic. I actually started writing erotica just before joining Lush, and actually joined here in part because I could post my stories. Now i read to gain some insight into different subjects that I have no real life experience in, then transfer that knowledge and use my imagination in writing my own stories.
The Internet made me do it
Honestly? I was browsing in a used-bookstore in the University District in Seattle, and came across Deborah Addington's A Hand In The Bush: The Fine Art of Vaginal Fisting. I started reading it and bam! I was hooked on literary porn (although this particular book has a mix of nonfiction, fiction, instructions, and first-person experiences, so I'm not really sure that it counts as being in the "sex story" category).
Want to spend some time wallowing in a Recommended Read? Pick one! Or two! Or seven!

I found a stash of Dad's softcore magazines when I was a young teen and the stories/letters made me laugh - they were ridiculous. The internet introduced me to more interesting stories.
Porn mags when I was 12-ish - started with soft core but always enjoyed the readers stories and some of the fiction. This progressed to hard core porn - Color Climax, Private etc - weren't many stories in those ;-). Came across Lush and absolutely love it - such vivid imaginations, thought I tend to favour the more 'from experience' stories, just wish I was fluent enough with writing that I could share some of my 'moments'!
It appears Penthouse letters were the gateway drug for most of us smile. They were for me, the more unrealistic the better. Hotter than the pix because you got to use your imagination. I still have fantasies I first discovered in those letters.

That's a real book! Not that I thought you were lying, I was just shocked it was on Amazon.

I first started reading penthouse stories also and I couldn't get enough of them, so I started searching on the web for sex stories and came across Lush....
When I was young I found a sex magazine in a drawer, it didn't have many pictures but lots of stories, I hid it under my bed and read it when I could! I've never looked back lol
One of my friends and I found an old forum magazine at the trash dumpsters. We took turn reading the stories and laughing at the scenarios. I enjoyed how I could play the stories out in my imagination, and see the action. It turned me on mush more than porn videos ever did.
Quite a few years back a former partner was trying to persuade me to try swinging. He produced copies of Escort (a UK swingers/contact magazine) to enlighten me about swinging.
Much to my amazement I found some of the readers letters highly stimulating and enjoyable - I guess things just developed form there until I found Lush, for which I shall always be eternally grateful.
It started with Sydney Sheldon books in middle school. In high school a friend showed me penthouse forum, like a lot of others here. I then would search out books of erotica. Not an easy task before the internet. Read Anne Rice's Beauty Trilogy. Then thankfully someone sent me a link to Lush and I found my home for all my erotica needs. That friend will always have a special place in my heart for here I feel that I have found a "home" of sorts. One that accepts me and all my quirks.
I am a huge fan of Jackie Collins and she writes the best erotica I think.

I found a link to a site, figured I'd give it ago and found it even hotter than porn smile
when i read the claiming of sleeping beauty at 17. my innocent lil mind had NO idea words could be so filthy.

Say. Her. Name.

Was an avid reader as a kid, read everything I could get my hands on, and of course some of those were Jackie Collins, etc, and being an aircraft engineer, found magazines in the hangars that I don't think the men realised I was finding. Then discovered fan-fiction world online, and role playing games, and have written and read erotica ever since. Started out writing 'stories' in a chat room, for 'entertainment' and went from there.
Started at a young age finding a stack of playboys in the barn on the farm, not sure if they were older brothers or farmhands lol... from there it went to erotic stories online.

Yep! I hear ya... add me to that list, and I can relate to the rest of your post as well.
looking for something to read while waiting for a plane. Found a book on the bench next to me and liked it very erotic.
Found a notebook one of my relations lost, it was full of erotic writing and quite shocked me at first, but he never got the book back.
I first started reading erotica when I was in university. I was in a bookshop just looking for a nice read and came across the erotica section. I saw a book which was a compilation of short stories by different authors and after that I've never stopped.

I didnt start writing erotica till I was in my 30's though. smile
At school ,Lady Chaterlies lover was doing the rounds and I was hooked
When I was young I'd sneak off with my sister's romance novels and read the sex scenes. Later when I found porn magazines I discovered I liked the stories just as much as the pics.
In high school, a lesbian senior let me read stories she'd written about her fantasies about me and other girls in school.
I was 13 and my older brother was in the Army. He came home on leave and I swiped his copy of Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller out of his duffle bag. After that, I went to bookstores looking for anything written by his lover in Paris, Anais Nin. Delta of Venus was a real eye opener. She was writing back in the 1930's explicit stories about her bisexuality and her sexual entertainments at Paris parties. She sparked my interest in lesbianism. That was new territory for me. Also, her detailed descriptions of the scent and taste of women just made my imagination run wild like nothing before. There were several stories about tricks she played on her gullible husband, who was a banker. He refused to believe that his wife was cheating on him. Once, she and Henry Miller were all sweaty after they had fucked. They started talking about how they could prove to him that she was having sex with others. They decided to take some scissors and cut her pubic hair and mail it to him at his bank. Miller had ejaculated on her pubic hair, so they sent it to him soaked in cum.
I don't recall, but after the first time, they kept me cumming back

Old vintage Hustler magazines
they had a story section I enjoyed..

OMG, I thought I was the only one! And so many decades apart too!
For me, it was from those naughty magazines, like playboy & penthouse etc, in the reader's letters, but they are usually too expensive to buy too often, then one day l was online an just googled adult sex stories, a website popped up that let me read penthouse letters magazine, then one day it wouldn't let me read any more, so l just goggled adult sex stories, clicked on one of em, turned out it was lush, the story was by kingdick99, read it and after l couldn't stop thinking about it, so l read some more, not long after that joined up with lush, been here ever since, also read some stories on literotica too and joined up with them as well, lol
