So here in Australia we have a countdown of "The Hottest 100" songs of the previous year each Australia Day. As voted on by a national radio stations liseners.

DRAKE, "Headlines"



I've always liked Drake because of his penchant for periodically breaking from the "all badass, all the time" persona that most hip hop artists put forth. Some of his songs are all swagger, some of them are a bit mopey, some are paranoid, and some are defiantly bitter.

"Headlines", with its jittery backbeat, even sounds neurotic as Drake cycles through all of those emotions in the space of three minutes; threatening and posturing one moment, reflecting sadly on his empty relationships the next. Pimping ain't easy, and whether or not we resent the stars that dare to bitch about it, neither is being a rap superstar with fans always expecting something better, and expecting it yesterday:

If they don't get it, they'll be over you,
That new shit that you got is overdue,
You better do what you're supposed to do.
I'm like,"Why I gotta be all that"
But still I can't deny the fact that it's...true.

I have several from 2011 that I love, but this one was the first that came to mind.
