I thought I'd start this thread with the theme of finding covers of songs that reinterpret/reveal the original song in a new light (or just is better than the original).

Edit: I've cleaned up this first post as it wasn't being formatted correctly - I posted each entry individually below instead (& included the original version too)

And just a left field one - Don McClean doing Mountains of Mourne - a classic Irish ballad normally just rattled through, but McClean exposes the poignancy & sadness (all Irish ballads have that in heaps) in the song

There are lots out there - some "new" songs are a rediscovery of an old song that a lot of the listeners don't realise

Redoing my first post to separate out each individual song & include the original - clean up the mess

I'll start with this classic "Mad World" by Tears for Fears

Redone by Gary Jules & given a much slower, darker treatment

Here's one that has had great covers through the decades "I don't want to talk about it"

Original by Crazy Horse

Popular nterpretation by Rod Stewart (his early work was good interpreter of songs)

And one of the best covers by Everything But the Girl

A few yrs back I came to find out that the beatles are the original creators of such a sweet song. Nina* Simone definitely put some life to this track.

Yo, and what's good w/ that bubble guy living off of Simone's back. He's soulless when he sings. Has he even created noise or is he just doing karaoke at every concert?

One of my favourites... I love a good Cover, especially if it's kind of a New song...i have many more of those. But i gotta find them first...

The original...

Lana del Reys Cover of "Don't let me be misunderstood".

The original by Santa Esmeralda. Thanks to my dad i just love this disco freak show. *giggle

Oh, I see that I had already posted this.

Hurt, NIN. Johnny Cash covered it and now it’s Cash’s song.

Billie Jean by M Jackson - a classic - hard to beat

An interesting cover by The Civil Wars

What a weird cool unexpected cover. Nice.

Tintinnabulation - first place (Free Spirit)
Comet Q - second place (Quick and Risqué Sex)
Amnesia - third place (Le Noir Erotique)

Cash's cover is so good, I can't listen to his version without feeling some type of way.

And can't forget the ultimate cover, which is Whitney Houston covering Dolly Parton's 'I will always love you.'

Dolly's

Whitney's
