I just finished two books that I highly recommend... especially if you are interested in the demise of middle America.

This book looks at how modern conservative ideals are hurting the people in rural areas. It looks at Education in Kansas, Health Care in Kentucky and guns in Missouri.

My favorite part of this book is an interview with a right wing man dying of liver disease, who, despite living off government assistance remains staunchly anti-universal health care because "he doesn't want any of his money going to illegal immigrants and welfare queens."

And Methland...

This is less a book about Meth and more about the reasons for the decay of middle America. It focuses on a small town in Iowa.

Both are good, but I highly recommend "Dying of Whiteness."

I just finished “At the Existentialist Cafe: Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails”.

Definitely very light philosophy but gives a great account of the creation of existentialism and the shift in modern philosophy (think Sartre). If you’ve read much Dostoyevsky you can appreciate him being included as well.

Under my Skin by Lisa Unger. It's kind of twisty. I'm 84 pages in and totally committed.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

I just picked up "Muck City."

The town of Belle Glade, Florida has a population of 10,000. It has one the highest per capita crime rates in the USA. It has a history of tragedy that persists to this day.

I first visited the town when I was 14. To this day, it is probably the worst town I have ever seen. Flat swampland dominated by an apocalyptic looking sugar refinery spewing smoke over a sprawling ghetto of decapitated houses and trailers.

It also has had 27 football players sent to the NFL in the last 20 years which is an unheard-of amount.

Beyond the Friday night lights, this book is an engrossing portrait of a community mired in a shameful past and uncertain future, but with the fierce will to survive, win, and escape to a better life.

This looks really good. I've gotta pick it up.

One of my fave writers, T C Boyle (he really influenced the way I write). This is about the early days of LSD and the scene that surrounded Timothy Leary during his 60s drug "experiments" at Harvard. Really entertaining book.

"The Mission" by Dana Priest Its about how diplomacy in the US takes a back seat to the CINCs of the various military commands (Pacific, European, etc) and the steady erosion of diplomatic arrangements in favour of military arrangements (e.g. USA will give Uzbekistan $100 million and a pile of military hardware if the US can use their air bases)

That death of Whiteness sounds utterly depressing yet utterly expected.

This is why I support a soft secession.

"The Punished Nonpartisan" <- Extreme BDSM and humiliation story. Heavy on plot. Served on a plate of political drama with a side of domestic terror. Currently Free download.

Jocelyn the Wicked <- futanari, fantasy fan fic, and some tentacles that escaped the laboratory

"Remembered Prisoners of a Forgotten War" -Lewis H. Carlson

Its about American POWs captured during the Korean War. Its a pretty brutal story and not for the faint of heart. The mistreatment by their captors certainly rivals anything that got more attention like the Bataan Death March or Vietnam. Upon repatriation to the US many of them were investigated as possible Communists as this was during the madness of McCarthyism.
